Rush Limbaugh’s advertising exodus is deep into its second week, and despite the radio host’s claim that the impact of 50 companies pulling their business has been negligible, listeners in the nation’s largest media market were treated to over five minutes of radio silence where Limbaugh’s advertisers once stood today.
There were four separate instances during this afternoon’s broadcast on WABC 770 AM in New York City where the network fell silent. During the lead in to the show, two and a half minutes of silence was broken up by a single, solitary ad before Limbaugh hit the air. Then, towards the end of the first hour of Limbaugh’s three hour program, a public service announcement was followed by an additional minute of silence before Limbaugh returned.
Another minute of dead air came in hour two, and a fifth minute in hour three followed that. A spokesperson for WABC wouldn’t say whether the silence was caused due to a technical glitch or Limbaugh’s fleeing sponsors.
As Media Matters reports, of the 86 ads that made it on the air today, 77 of them were free public service announcements donated by the Ad Council. An additional seven ads were from companies that are in the process of pulling their spots from the show, leaving just two ads during the entire three hour broadcast that were purposefully paid to appear during the program.

Apparently the G.O.P in all it's wisdom has decided that rather than providing alternatives to programs and legislation that they are against they would rather attempt to fight battles that have all ready been won. Unfortunately for them the targets of their misplaced attention are far more powerful and established than they were when they were fighting to gain equality in the last century. Although there are still issues to be resolved like pay equity and a level playing field when it comes to job advancement Women will never give up what is rightfully theirs because of some imaginary view of what their place in society should be in order to make men happy.I'm not sure how limiting the rights of Women plays into the grand scheme but I'm pretty sure it's not going to help get a Republican elected to anything. Just a thought.Apparently the G.O.P in all it's wisdom has decided that rather than providing... more

Every once in a great while this blog congratulates an individual for standing up to the powers that be -this is one of those times. Ms. Sandra Fluke is a Georgetown University law student who was asked to testify before a U.S. House committee about U.S. health insurance. The 1Lovejoy Nation would like to thank Ms. Fluke who dared to disagree with conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh over the issue of contraceptive mandates and the right to free access to those products.Every once in a great while this blog congratulates an individual for standing up to... more

Rush Limbaugh To Be Honored With Bust In Missouri Statehouse
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/05/rush-limbaugh-missouri-state-capitol_n_1321433.html
WASHINGTON — The Hall of Famous Missourians in the Missouri State Capitol is filled with the busts of famous people from the Show-Me State. There are political figures (Harry Truman, John Ashcroft), writers (Laura Ingalls Wilder), musicians (Scott Joplin, Charlie Parker) and even a game show host (Bob Barker). Right-wing radio personality Rush Limbaugh, who is currently embroiled in controversy after he called a female law student advocating for contraception coverage a “slut,” will soon be joining that esteemed group.
On Feb. 13, Kansas City, Mo. sculptor E. Spencer Schubert posted on his blog that he was in the process of sculpting busts of Limbaugh and Dred Scott, a slave who unsuccessfully sued for freedom for himself and his family in the famous 1857 case Dred Scott v. Sandford, to go into the Missouri State Capitol. Sean Nicholson of Progress Missouri was first to flag the post. From Schubert’s site:
Schubert also posted a picture of him working on the Limbaugh bust, with a photo of the radio host pulled up on his computer screen.
A staffer in the office of the Missouri House of Representatives did not know anything about the Limbaugh project but said that the individuals are chosen by the House Speaker. The picks do not require the approval of full chamber.
Leann Hager, a legislative assistant with Speaker Steven Tilley (R-Perryville), confirmed to The Huffington Post that Tilley had chosen three individuals to be honored this year: Limbaugh, Scott, and baseball legend Buck O’Neil, who was just inducted.
Schubert, who also sculpted the bust of O’Neil, did not return a request for comment.
Limbaugh is currently facing a torrent of criticism from both the right and the left for calling Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke, who spoke out in favor of contraception coverage, a “slut” and a “prostitute” last week. Limbaugh issued an apology for his comments on Saturday, but that has not stopped advertisers — including AOL, the parent company of The Huffington Post — from severing ties with his program.
UPDATE: 3:08 p.m. — The link to the page with Schubert working on the bust of Limbaugh is no longer working. The Huffington Post saved a copy of the picture:
UPDATE: 5:36 p.m. — Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) said Monday on MSNBC’s “Hardball” that she opposes the inclusion of Limbaugh in the Hall of Famous Missourians. “He shouldn’t be in this hall of fame next to Harry Truman, Mark Twain and Gen. Omar Bradley,” she said. McCaskill has a petition on her campaign website on the issue.
UPDATE: 6:10 p.m. — The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the busts are paid for with private funds raised by the Speaker, and that Limbaugh is expected to be inducted at the end of the legislative session in May. When asked about the selection of Limbaugh, Tilley told the Southeast Missourian, “Keep this in mind: It’s not called the Hall of Universally Loved Missourians. We’ve inducted people like John Ashcroft, Warren Hearnes and Harry Truman. They certainly had their detractors.”

Former Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) got caught by CNN’s “caucus cam” in Wasilla — and the whole CNN team to the opportunity to quiz her about the the GOP primary, her potential candidacy and, of course, her opinion on the Sandra Fluke affair. Unsurprisingly, Palin used the opportunity to call the liberal media hypocrites. “I think the definition of hypocrisy is for Rush Limbaugh to have been called out, force to apologize and retract what it is that he said in exercising his first amendment rights,” she said, “and never is the same applied to the leftist radicals who say such horrible things about the handicapped, about women, the defenseless.”
Palin was not ready to tell the cameras her choice for the GOP nomination, telling CNN, “I want to see the process continue, more debate about who it is that can bust through the Orwellian Obama rhetoric and pandering that we see in the incumbent, who can bust through that with facts, with history, with logic, with common sense in order for American voters to understand we have a choice,” indicating that she likely didn’t cast a ballot for former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-AK).
When asked, as she inevitably is, about her potential candidacy in 2016, she said, “Anything in this life, in this world is possible. Anything is possible for an American,” and declined to say that she wasn’t interested. “I would seriously consider whatever I can do to help our country,” she added.

It seems appropriate that we take a moment to reflect on what one of the greatest moments in American broadcasting history had to say about this phenomenon. On April 12, 1981, WKRP in Cincinnati aired its famous “Clean Up Radio Everywhere” episode, in which a deliberately Falwellian crusader (played by Richard Paul) attempts to intimidate WKRP into removing certain songs from its playlist. What ensues is a pointed, surprisingly thoughtful treatment of the boycott issue (that is, the crusaders get what I’d consider to be a more than fair hearing). Mr. Carlson’s ill-fated attempts to persuade the Rev. Halyers that his tactics were unAmerican presaged the ugly decade of self-righteous censorship to come, one that some years later found Berke Breathed, creator of Bloom County, harpooning the PMRC debacle thusly:
Mrs. Tippy Gorp: Well, Mr. Dallas… we’ve heard your smut masquerading as songs… and we’ve heard how teen prostitution pregnancy, drug use, cults, runaways, suicide and poor hygiene are sweeping this nation. We thought you might like to share with the committee any particular causes you might see for those latter problems…
Steve Dallas: I dunno. Maybe the proliferation of narrow, suffocating zealotry masquerading as parenting in this country. It seems appropriate that we take a moment to reflect on what one of the greatest... more

Okay, now it's getting warm in here.
(And the "Limbaugh sponsor" of the title wants to be a "not-sponsor," or perhaps an "alleged sponsor," so I gather. Hm.)
This morning I posted the following diary on the Kos: 31 Advertisers Still Working w/Limbaugh. One of the advertisers still appearing on Limbaugh's show, according to the Atlantic Wire article that I used as my diary source, is a mortgage firm called Network Capital. Never heard of them before last night.
This afternoon I found a response from one Alex Ramirez, a senior honcho at Network Capital, and the same guy who emailed the Atlantic Wire with an update on their advertising status: basically a disclaimer saying that WMAL, the DC radio station that airs Limbaugh's show, puts its ads wherever it likes, and NC has no control over where they go.

Rupert Murdoch has been the bullies "elephant in the room" in the politics of the English speaking world for decades. He did it by turning journalism into immense gutter press called News Corp. An ocean of goo in which he is now drowning.
If you or (even worse) I - would have been accused of thousands of incidents of illegal phone hacking, bribing police and government officials, lying to congress, paying hush money, destroying computer evidence - we would have been in jail awaiting trail before you could say "Murdoch is the biggest Mafia boss on Earth and his Fox News runs the GOP party as if it had a Rush in the Limbaugh".
Thus, many thanks and bravo to Frontline, for their courage to comfort evil, by following the Guardian and its reporter Nick Davies, who miraculously, started last year the downfall of the "king of tits and sleaze".
Watch Murdoch's Scandal Preview on PBS. See more from FRONTLINE.
A trailer of the March 27th movie is available on PBS. Its awesome.

Looks like he's accepted the inevitable, and is basically telling his advertisers to go to hell. Via Media Matters, here's the latest from today's show:
This show is about you. It's not about the advertisers. I knew the political inclinations of these people. They didn't care when they were profiting, and I didn't either.
So AOL and all the rest of them were just a bunch of liberals all along.
Nobody understands better than Rush that it's all business. And what's with the "Hang in there" at the end? Is he actually afraid that his loyal army of dittoheads might be heading for the exits?
