Gordon Brown's first anniversary as prime minister was marked by a trouncing in the Henley by-election, with Labour limping into fifth place behind the Greens and the far-right BNP and its candidate losing his deposit.
The disastrous night for Labour was an excellent result for David Cameron's Conservatives, whose candidate John Howell won the seat with an increased 57 percent share of votes cast. The Liberal Democrats came second with a 27.9 percent share.
"It's a terrible result," Labour Health Minister Ben Bradshaw told BBC radio on Friday, saying voters were reacting to economic events beyond the control of the government.

I have really started to believe that conservatives, at least the far rights, have something wrong with them that is socially unacceptable and has long been dangerous to other peoples well being. This is an article from 2007 that I don't remember hearing anything about, probably because the powers that be squelched it. It is a study by the National Institute of Mental Health about how conservatives may be mentally ill. I can't cut and paste for some reason, so please visit the site for a good read. I believe that this has gone too far. I couldn't find a sufficient link (if anyone can, please, post it! thanks.) but I heard and read about an e-mail sent out by the party saying something to the extent of " Sen. Obama's full name should always be said when adressing him or his beliefs."
Of course, his full name is Barack Hussein Obama... and according to Republicans, the 'Hussein' ringing over and over again will turn-off people supporting Obama.
Another example is the "terrorist fist jab" comment. 'Nuff said.
Furthermore, all the 'elitest' comments are just being repeated to turn off people to Obama.
Stephen Colbert, my personal favorite amongst pundits, made a comment the other night to the extent of
"The people calling Obama an elitist have every right to, because they are the impoverished people in our country that need people who will support them. These people are the politicians and the conservative media."
He also had a comment made about a statement issued by another senator saying "Barack Obama isn't the kind of person you would see at an Applebee's
Salad Bar." Says Stephen, "This is true, especially because Applebee's has no salad bar."
All in all, this is nothing but propaganda, and it's almost 'immature'.
Any comments, or other propaganda being passed around?
Links greatly appreciated!I believe that this has gone too far. I couldn't find a sufficient link (if... more

The Conservative Party's leader in the European Parliament has been forced to resign, after admitting to breaking the rules on expenses to the tune of around £500,000. Ironically, Giles Chichester's role was to ensure MEPs in his party were behaving scrupulously. But it has emerged that over the past 12 years he has been transferring funds from MEP allowances into a company of which he was a director.
The Tories have moved to head off damaging allegations of sleaze. David Cameron, Tory party leader, issued the following statement:
"Giles Chichester is right to stand down as leader of our MEPs to prepare a full explanation of how his office is funded. Just as I expect our MPs to adhere to the highest standards, so must our MEPs. The tax-paying public have a right to know how their money is being spent and politicians have a duty to ensure it is spent properly."The Conservative Party's leader in the European Parliament has been forced to... more

With all the focus on Obama's pastors and church, every forgets about McCain's pastor problems. Openleft.com recently listed the 10 most outrageous quotes from McCain's spiritual advisers.
Here's two of them:
1. "Do you know the difference between a woman with PMS and a snarling Doberman pinscher? The answer is lipstick. Do you know the difference between a terrorist and a woman with PMS? You can negotiate with a terrorist." - Pastor John Hagee in his book What Every Man Wants in a Woman (Charisma House, 2005)
2. "[Gay marriage] will open the door to incest, to polygamy, and every conceivable marriage arrangement demented minds can possibly conceive. If God does not then punish America, He will have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah." - Pastor John Hagee

UK MPs have voted against the controversial proposals that would have seen the legal time limit on abortions lowered to weeks.
Debates were put forward suggesting that the limit be lowered to 20 weeks, with others reportedly asking for cuts as low as 12 weeks, but all were defeated by a vote of 393 to 71.
For some extra reading on the abortion debate, the conservative MP, Nadine Dorries, waged a high-profile campaign - 20 Reasons for 20 Weeks which was been supported by both the Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph.. it lists 20 reasons for a reduction in the time limit on abortion.

Televangelist John Hagee, one of John McCain’s highest-profile supporters from the religious right, has apologized for calling the Roman Catholic Church “the great whore” and “the apostate church.”
In a letter Monday to Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Civil and Religious Rights, Hagee wrote, “I want to express my deep regret for any comments that Catholics have found hurtful.”
Pastor Hagee, leader of San Antonio’s Cornerstone Church, had said his anti-Catholic remarks had been taken out of context, but in the letter he appeared to own up to them.
“Neither of these phrases can be synonymous with the Catholic Church,” he wrote.
Donohue, accepting the apology, said on FOX News Radio: “I’m absolutely delighted …
I haven’t seen such a quick turnaround in the 15 years that I have been president of the Catholic League.” He said he plans to meet with Hagee on Thursday.
Likening Hagee to two New York shock jocks who encouraged a pair of listeners to attempt to have sex in St. Patrick’s Cathedral in 2002, Donohue added that he is receptive to honest apologies.
“We’re not in the business of rejecting apologies whether it’s from Opie and Anthony or Pastor Hagee so now when we meet we can understand that this issue is moot and behind us and I think it’s a great moment that we can have some degree of reconciliation.”Televangelist John Hagee, one of John McCain’s highest-profile supporters from... more

Election officials have begun counting the London mayoral votes and the result is widely expected to rely on second choice ballots.
The Tories are hoping that bookies-favourite Boris Johnson can secure victory and oust Ken Livingstone, 'sealing the deal' on the May Day local elections that saw Labour suffer their worst election result in 40 years.
Analysts suggest an increase in voter turnout could give Ken Livingstone a chance to retain office though the Guardian reports that Labour is talking down the chances of a Livingstone win. According to the paper, Harriet Harman, Labour's deputy leader, strongly hinted that she expects Johnson to be declared mayor when the results are announced, probably late this afternoon.

Gordon Brown's leadership was in turmoil last night after claims that Tony Blair does not believe he is capable of beating David Cameron and winning the next election.
The humiliating charge from Blair's former fundraiser and confidant Lord Levy came as Labour MPs pleaded for Brown to stay away from the campaign trail in this week's critical London mayoral elections for fear of wrecking Ken Livingstone's chances. Levy's intervention will confirm fears that Brown is becoming an electoral liability.
Even though Blair last night issued a statement categorically denying the claims and insisting he did believe Labour could win under his successor, there was consternation in Downing Street.
In his memoirs, serialised today in the Mail on Sunday newspaper, Levy writes that Blair 'told me on a number of occasions he was convinced Gordon "could never beat Cameron"'. The peer added in an interview yesterday that Blair was 'disappointed to see Labour's slide' under his successor, with an ICM poll of marginal seats showing yesterday that on current polling trends 131 Labour MPs could lose their seats, handing David Cameron a solid majority.
Brown had been 'indecisive' and was 'not honest' about the reasons he failed to hold an election last autumn, Levy said. His book also claims Brown knew about the controversial secret loans from Labour donors at the heart of the 'cash for honours' allegations - but also blames Blair for the decision to start taking loans from donors, saying that he himself had been strongly against it. Levy also reveals that Blair decided which donors got peerages.
Levy was arrested during the inquiry into whether peerages were effectively 'sold' to Labour party donors, but did not face charges.
Levy said Blair still believed he could have won a fourth election, adding: 'But Gordon? "He can't defeat Cameron," Tony told me. Blair believed Cameron had major strengths - political timing, a winning personality and a natural ability to communicate to Middle England that Gordon would be unable to match.'
Blair's spokesman said the former PM 'doesn't agree with the views attributed to him by Lord Levy and fully believes Labour with Gordon Brown's leadership can win the next election.'
Levy's disclosures will fuel growing panic in Labour ranks, with ministers now openly discussing whether Brown could be persuaded to stand aside if Labour does badly in Thursday's London and local elections. His prospects were not helped by an oil refinery strike in Scotland prompting panic-buying of petrol and fears of rationing yesterday.Gordon Brown's leadership was in turmoil last night after claims that Tony Blair... more

The teenager was given a police caution - complete with a slip which worded the reason for the caution as “Wiping snot down David Cameron’s back” - in the town centre of Hastings, East Sussex.
Apparently the Tories new slogan is 'Change You Can Trust'. Maybe that should change to "You've Got A Snotty Back, You Snotty-backed Snotback." It has a ring to it.

We can see how the reporters have been following David Cameron around London on his bike breaking all sorts of petty laws.
Big deal - I for one don't really care and as you see he's not the only one doing it but he's the only one being victimised. At least he's helping the environment and London by not using his car.
It's a pity the reporters have nothing better to do, they obviously have too much time in their hands.

UK internet users have been searching for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton more than home grown British politicians. Obama is the most searched for political figure in the UK with more than five times the amount of searches for Gordon Brown. Hillary Clinton has notched up three times the number of searches than the Prime Minister.
Brown can at least console himself with that fact that he is more searched for than Republican front runner John McCain. The same can't be said for Conservative leader David Cameron, who has fallen into fifth place behind the Arizona senator.
The websites for Obama, McCain and Clinton, Wikipedia and Google News UK are the top three websites visited after individual searches for their names. The search term 'Barack Obama', the most searched-for politician out of the three, was the 80th most popular search term on Google News UK and 79th most popular on Wikipedia during February.UK internet users have been searching for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton more than... more
