Chris Rock takes on black hair

This guest has taken on the subject of the politics of black hair (or to be precise, kinky hair) several times, commenting on the travails of black women who are culturally addicted to "creamy crack" -- the horrid, toxic relaxers used to chemically straighten hair. It's all in order to avoid any natural naps showing at the root, and the billion-dollar industry that caters to this beauty choice based on loathing the natural texture of one's hair that has roots back to the days of slavery and the definition of what is "good hair."

ots of people were interested in these posts, others pooh-poohed the notion that the politics of hair had any significance in "post-racial America" or reflected any socio-pathologies that needed to be addressed. In the black community, it's almost taboo to discuss the issue, and, quite frankly, I am greatful that the brilliant Chris Rock has written and stars in the documentary "Good Hair" directed by Jeff Stilson (co-writers are Jeff Stilson, Lance Crouther and Chuck Sklar). If there's any way to break down the walls of silence to discuss this topic with candor, Rock can do it.

An exposé of comic proportions that only Chris Rock could pull off, "Good Hair" visits beauty salons and hairstyling battles, scientific laboratories and Indian temples to explore the way hairstyles impact the activities, pocketbooks, sexual relationships, and self-esteem of the black community. Director Jeff Stilson follows Chris Rock on this raucous adventure prompted by Rock's daughter approaching him and asking, "Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?" Haircare professionals, beautyshop and barbershop patrons, as well as celebrities including Ice-T, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symone, Dr. Maya Angelou, Salt n Pepa, Eve and Reverend Al Sharpton all candidly offer their stories and observations to Rock while he struggles with the task of figuring out how to respond to his daughter's question.Glenn Greenwald is on vacation this week. Chris Rock Reviews: Coldplay In Concert

Hello my name is Chris Rock aka the only black at the concert. This year has been one my busiest concert years of all time. So far this year I was the only black guy at the Van Halen concert, the only black guy at the Cure concert, and the only black guy at the White Stripes concert. And later on this year I'm sure I'll be the only black guy at the Radiohead concert.

This week my assignment was to see Coldplay at Madison Square Garden. Now being the only black guy can sometimes be dangerous like the time I was the only black guy at an ACDC concert in Prague. There not use to seeing black people at all in Prague, but a black guy singing "Hell's Bells" was just a little to much for them to take. Now I didn't know what to expect from a Coldplay concert, but I figured I wasn't gonna get stabbed in the middle of "Yellow." Anyway the concert was pretty good. I thought it was a perfect mix of old and new songs and I gotta say that when they did something from the new album, Chris Martin was smart enough not to say the words you hate to hear the most at a concert; " This is something from our new album." That's like saying this is a good time to take a shit.

Anyway when they did a new song they just did it and it seemed to fit right in with the old stuff. I didn't know the names of any of the new songs, but the white people next to me seemed to know every word. If I have any complaints I thought Chris Martin might have mentioned the fact that the concert was free a few too many times. I thought it was a little obnoxious. If you pay for dinner just pay for it, don't say to me you like that free food. Free food is good, ain't it. Again the white people seemed happy with it, but as the only black guy there I thought he might be talking to me. My other complaint was the use of pre-record music and drum machines. At one point I thought they were gonna sing Rhythm Nation, but other than those two things I thought it was a great concert. When they went into the crowd and did a stripped down version of "Yellow" I thought that was the highlight of a great night. Music critics like to compare Coldplay to Radiohead and that's not fair. Coldplay is no Radiohead and Radiohead is no Coldplay. You can understand every word to a Coldplay song the first time you hear it. Nothing wrong with that. If anything, Coldplay kind of reminds me of a British Hall and Oates. In the eighties what did a pop record song like? It sounded like Darryl Hall. And now what does a pop record sound like? It sounds like Chris Martin. Chris Rock to Obama: 'You can't beat white people, you can only knock them out'

'Will having the most votes actually mean something? That was the debate between Bill Maher and Chris Rock (see video clip) on the last 'Real Time.'

Rocks zinger -- (on who won-the-debates) -- sums up the racial pink elephant sitting over on side lines: 'You can't beat white people, you can only knock them out...'

'Given the past week, the debate should have been a cinch for Obama.' says Maureen Dowd. 'It’s not a lecture hall; it’s a joust. It’s not how cerebral you are. It’s how visceral you are...'

Dowd adds -- 'Even when McCain sneered, I don’t need any on-the-job training, I’m ready to go at it right now, Obama didn’t directly respond, but veered off into a story about his father being from Kenya and how he got his name. (Thanks, Barack, we got that from your book. It’s great for a memoir, but not a debate.)'

Could Obama actually be holding back the big-guns for an October surprise; or, as this aritcle suggests, does he suffer from a touch of that delusional disorder -- (that me, me, me, arrogance) -- so much so, that he's not in touch with what's going on around him??

'Grandiosity is also, more than anything else, what characterizes narcissism, and Obama's narcissism has become obvious to many,' suggests the American Thinker.

Which refers to Obama's posturing as -- 'a self-absorbed narcissist who portrays himself as a political messiah -- the anointed one.'

'Summing up Obama's entire campaign as -- 'nothing more than a demand to be recognized as superior without commensurate accomplishments: has there ever been a presidential nominee with a wider gap between his estimation of himself and the sum total of his lifetime achievements?'

Not sure if I buy into the whole narcissist-angle. I mean wasn't Jesus Christ the ultimate narcissist? -- Telling people he was the only way to heaven. And look at all the good he left behind.
