Suspected drug hit men dumped four human heads in ice chests in northern Mexico on Friday in a gruesome killing of rivals, a state attorney general's office said.
"They were four men, beheaded by groups linked to drug trafficking. We believe the victims were drug gang members themselves," a spokeswoman said.
The heads were placed in four ice chests on Friday morning on a highway on the edge of the mining city of Durango and were found by police patrolling in the area.
Durango state is close to the Pacific state of Sinaloa, home to major traffickers including Mexico's most wanted man, Joaquin "El Chapo" (Shorty) Guzman.
Gangland killings have surged again in Mexico in recent weeks and organized crime murders across the country total 1,378 this year, Mexico's attorney general said on Friday, up 47 percent from this time last year.

Six men were arrested after the cocaine was discovered when two cars were searched at a UK port. Officials said the seizure was a breakthrough in the fight against drug smuggling. "This is one of the biggest mainland seizures ever seen in the UK," a police statement said. The Venezuelan air force bombed a landing strip used to bring cocaine across the border from Colombia yesterday, several weeks after the United States criticized President Hugo Chavez's drug-fighting record. Two fighter jets and a helicopter fired rockets and machine guns on the runway to the infrastructure used by drug cartels and traffickers. The army plans to destroy dozens of border runways in coming days. Seizures of cocaine in Venezuela have recently fallen from 39 tonnes (2006) to 32 tonnes (2007), according to government figures. 5.3 tonnes have been captured so far this year. The Venezuelan air force bombed a landing strip used to bring cocaine across the... more

Habitual beachcombers have come across £7 million worth of cocaine on the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall in the last few weeks. The packages are thought to have floated up from the Caribbean, some of the packages are marked "Colombia", but how they ended up in the sea remains a puzzle for officials.
"The age of the packages, and the presence of warm water-loving barnacles suggests they may be floating all the way across the Atlantic from the Caribbean. One theory is that smugglers dumped the cocaine overboard as they were pursued by American or British anti-drug patrols."
Not surprisingly, police are worried that other packages may be heading to the UK, or may have already arrived, and could fall into the wrong hands.Habitual beachcombers have come across £7 million worth of cocaine on the Lizard... more

The scale of Britain's illicit drug economy has been put into numbers by the Home Office. Estimates that there are "300 major importers, 3,000 wholesalers and 70,000 street dealers involved in a trade with a turnover of between £7bn and £8bn a year." It's a real supply and demand retail economy, too. The report says that the average drug slinger employs salaried staff and raises their heroin prices when demand peaks during Christmas.

Amy Winehouse and Kate Moss are two of the celebrities singled out by UN Drug official Antonio Maria Costa in his public attack on "celebrity" cocaine use. He accused them of glamorizing a drug trade that exploits Africa's west coast with drug transit routes between Colombia and Europe.
"Europeans now understand that they should not buy blood diamonds, or clothes made by slaves working in sweatshops," Mr Costa told a drug conference in Madrid last week. "Yet with cocaine, the opposite occurs."
So not only are we seeing a massive rise in cocaine use among Britain's youth, it's also threatening to devastate impoverished West African nations who are vulnerable to corruption and the draw of easy money. Do you think it's up to the celebs to change their ways? Or should the media play a bigger role in not promoting celeb drug use? Who is responsible here?Amy Winehouse and Kate Moss are two of the celebrities singled out by UN Drug official... more
