George Steinbrenner, a towering and intimidating figure who dominated the New York sports scene for 35 years, winning 11 American League pennants and seven world championships as owner of the Yankees, in and around two suspensions from baseball and multiple feuds and firings, died Tuesday morning in Tampa after suffering a massive heart attack. He was 80.
"The Boss" - as he was so aptly named by Daily News columnist Mike Lupica, his longtime antagonist - died at around 6:30 a.m. He had been suffering from failing health, the result of a series of strokes, for the past few years.
His family released a statement Tuesday morning. "It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing," the statement said. "He was an incredible and charitable man. First and foremost he was devoted to his entire family - his beloved wife, Joan; his sisters, Susan Norpell and Judy Kamm, his children, Hank, Jennifer, Jessica and Hal; and all his grandchildren. He was a visionary and a giant in the world of sports. He took a great but struggling franchise and turned it into a champion again."

On the other hand, Steinbrenner was great for the game because every compelling drama needs a strong heel. It’s good for baseball when the Yankees are winning because they’re so polarizing. You love ‘em or you hate ‘em, and if you love ‘em or hate ‘em you’re more likely to tune in for an epic battle between Good and Evil. Perhaps moreso than any other narrative thread in American popular culture, the great American morality play that unfolds each October is most engaging when the Yankees are on stage. On the other hand, Steinbrenner was great for the game because every compelling drama... more

Yes, the grass at Yankee Stadium is holier than the Pope.
"The Yankees had only one request, and that is that we not touch their grass," said Mark Ackermann, who is running the Office of the Papal Visit for the New York archdiocese. "The All-Star game will be there this year and of course we're all confident that the World Series will be there as well. So the Yankees need to keep it in good shape and we've been most respectful of that."Yes, the grass at Yankee Stadium is holier than the Pope.

The Yankees would not be the great franchise they are without George...
George built the dynasty... George built the new park next door...
George needs his own statue in Monument Park too.
Every "real" Yankee fans owes everything they've enjoyed to George...
He will be in the Hall soon.
And it's only right the Yankees name their Spring Training site after George...It's about time...

Joe Torre is a 1st ballot Hall of Famer, there is no question about that. As a player and coach he succeeded on the highest levels. I can't blame the Boss (not Bruce but George) for getting rid of Torre but I can protest against the way in which this was handled, or mishandled. It has been common knowledge for a while now that Steinbrenner has taken issue with Joe Torre for a number of reasons. However, after the 1st two losses to Cleveland, Mr. Steinbrenner made a classless move by kicking Torre out by ultimatum. Either the Yanks win or Joe gets fired. No matter what happened this post season it is hard to see how Torre couldve come back. I know that the Yankees expect a championship every year but for a guy that has meant so much to his players, the organization and the city of New York this was just not the correct way to deal with this. I'm old enough to have seen Mr. Steinbrenner pull some pretty cold moves but this was the worst yet. Joe Torre I salute you and wish you the best.Joe Torre is a 1st ballot Hall of Famer, there is no question about that. As a player... more
