In 1969 John Lennon & Yoko Ono famously held a two week "bed in" to peacefully protest the Vietnam War. The first one took place in Amsterdam and the second was to be held in New York, but Lennon was banned from the US due to his Cannabis conviction. They moved the bed in to the Bahamas but the heat bothered them so they moved it to again to Montreal, where it was documented by the CBC. The images below were taken by the CBC and were featured in an exhibition on the event at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art.

We the undersigned believe that Mark David Chapman should not be granted parole for the murder of John Lennon.
Chapman committed a heinous crime, unprovoked and without remorse. He shot to death John Lennon, a man who had signed an autograph for him only six hours earlier. He deserves to pay for this with life in prison.
It is also a matter of public safety that he not be released. He should not be free to harm anyone else. Please remember Mr. John Lennon, who believed in peace. Please remember that Mark David Chapman is forty-nine years old, and John Lennon never got to be older than forty.
Please do not let this man back on the streets.
John Winston Ono Lennon

While Nowhere Boy, the account of John Lennon’s teen years, is drawing tepid to good reviews after a recent London festival debut, I’m still seeing voices of dissent and disinterest aimed at the film, which stars Aaron Johnson as the young Lennon. I’m curious to see how the same people will react to Naked Lennon, an upcoming BBC Four production written by Robert Jones that has just cast Christopher Eccleston as Lennon circa ‘67-’71.

When a legend is murdered, it's more common to celebrate said legend's death than his/her birth. John Lennon is no exception. As the 20th anniversary of Lennon's murder will set off a firestorm of much deserved tributes next year (December 8, 2010), everyone should take a moment to celebrate his birth today as well. After all, the man wouldn't have given us such mind blowingly powerful music had he never been born. In honor of this occasion, here's a track selection from each of John's solo albums (not including live albums or the avant-garde Yoko collaborations... we don't want to be here all day). When a legend is murdered, it's more common to celebrate said legend's death... more
Leaving school at the time of post-World War II, an era when France was being rebuilt and when everything seemed possible, Claude Azoulay began working at France’s Paris-Match magazine in 1954. Having covered the Algerian war, the Six-Day War and many others, his career followed some of the most dramatic events during the second-half of the twentieth century. In addition, his photo-journalism work took him on travels to Saint-Tropez and Cannes, as well as to the major studios and movie sets in London and Hollywood. Azoulay served as an exemplary part of the of great photo-journalism staff at Paris-Match for more than forty years, departing in 1996 to seek other adventures in the world.
Looking through a list of Azoulay’s photographic portraits made of stars and other celebrity figures is akin to opening an encyclopedia of film. Azoulay photographed everything that he could; his portraits of celebrities are so alive and include brilliant images of Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve, Elizabeth Taylor, Faye Dunaway, Barbara Streisand, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Kirk Douglas, Jane Fonda, Francis Bacon, Peter O’Toole, John Wayne, François Mitterand and countless others. He did not steal their images; rather, they lent him their souls in an attentive and caring mirror. And thus his body of work has become an important portrait of our time.
This piece presents a number of memorable b&w vintage photographs, as well as a remarkable slide show of additional vintage photographs.Leaving school at the time of post-World War II, an era when France was being rebuilt... more
Lucy of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” just died, but whatever happened to Peggy Sue, Sweet Caroline, Delilah, and Beethoven’s Elise?
Lucy Vodden—aka “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” passed away this week after a battle with lupus, reigniting the story behind the classic Beatles’ hit (Lucy and Julian Lennon were nursery school classmates). In our gallery, The Daily Beast takes a look back at the other great muses of rock, including Caroline Kennedy, Carole King, Rosanna Arquette, Peggy Sue, Mozart’s mistress, and a real-estate agent in California who goes by “Sharona.”Lucy of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” just died, but whatever happened... more

You can call it a case of history repeating itself. Sean Lennon has recreated the award-winning Rolling Stone cover photo of his parents, Yoko Ono and John Lennon, taken by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz on Dec. 8, 1980, just hours before the assassination of the former Beatle. While the original photo shows a clothed Ono being spooned by a naked Lennon, the junior Lennon and his girlfriend, model Kemp Muhl, switched roles for the remake, with Lennon keeping his pants on and Muhl, well, not so much. The Huffington Post (link NSFW) reports that the remake appears in the fall issue of independent French style publication Purple.

In 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono spent their honeymoon in bed.
The photos from the Bed-In have become iconic. Sitting upright and talking to reporters, framed by signs reading, "Bed Peace" and "Hair Peace."Lennon and Ono used their honeymoon to talk about peace during the height of the Vietnam War and the Cold War.
his year, an international peace group called The World March for Peace and Nonviolence decided to bring back the bed-in to promote hundreds of global peace events taking place in every continent over the next year. The issue at hand: the spread of nuclear weapons.
Most of the statements were personal. Perhaps 125 people at any one time gathered around the bed. Since the event took place only yards from Strawberry Fields, many tourists who came to pay homage to Lennon could easily find it.
Sitting on the peace-bed, I think that my journey for my future, starting right now, is to listen more and learn how to work out differences and learn how to move away from trying to overpower those who disagree," said Gina Moss, a high-school teacher. In 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono spent their honeymoon in bed. One of John Lennon's guitars from the early years of his Beatles career sold for £205,250 at auction yesterday, almost doubling its £100,000 - 150,000 estimate.
Lennon bought the 1958 Hofner Senator guitar from Hessy's Music store in Liverpool and auctioneers believe he kept it at home for song-writing purposes.
It was accompanied by a fax of a 1982 letter from George Harrison saying the guitar was one of Lennon's first guitars.
