Elizabeth Edwards dies after battle with cancer

Elizabeth Edwards, the estranged wife of former North Carolina senator and presidential candidate John Edwards, died Tuesday after a lengthy battle with breast cancer. She was 61.
Edwards died Tuesday morning in her home in Chapel Hill, surrrounded by family.
"Today we have lost the comfort of Elizabeth's presence but she remains the heart of this family. We love her and will never know anyone more inspiring or full of life," her family said in a statement.
"On behalf of Elizabeth we want to express our gratitude to the thousands of kindred spirits who moved and inspired her along the way. Your support and prayers touched our entire family."
Edwards was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. In 2007 she announced the disease had spread to her ribs and hips, saying it was incurable but treatable.
On Monday, Edwards released a statement saying she had stopped her cancer treatment after doctors told her additional treatment would be "unproductive."

Elizabeth Edwards stops cancer treatment, releases statement

(CNN) - Elizabeth Edwards is surrounded by family and friends in her North Carolina home after being informed by her doctors that further cancer treatment would be unproductive.
"Elizabeth has been advised by her doctors that further treatment of her cancer would be unproductive," the Edwards family said Monday in a statement. "She is resting at home with family and friends and has posted this message to friends on her Facebook page."
The message from Edwards, the wife of two-time presidential candidate John Edwards, reads:
"You all know that I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces – my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope. These graces have carried me through difficult times and they have brought more joy to the good times than I ever could have imagined. The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that. And, yes, there are certainly times when we aren't able to muster as much strength and patience as we would like. It's called being human.
"But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that I am grateful. It isn't possible to put into words the love and gratitude I feel to everyone who has and continues to support and inspire me every day. To you I simply say: you know."
Edwards was told by her doctors last week that additional cancer treatments were futile, said a source close to the family. Her prognosis was described in terms of weeks, not months, the source said.
She is receiving treatment and medications, however, for symptoms and side effects.
"She is not in pain and all things considered there is a good vibe here," said the source. "She has prepared for this"
John Edwards and their children are at her side, along with Elizabeth's brother and sister.

"President Obama on Thursday signed a memorandum requiring hospitals to allow gays and lesbians to have non-family visitors and to grant their partners medical power of attorney. The president ordered the Department of Health and Human Services to prohibit discrimination in hospital visitation. The memo is scheduled to be made public Friday morning, according to an administration official and another source familiar with the White House decision. An official said the new rule will affect any hospital that receives Medicare or Medicaid funding."
In the memo the President said "Every day, all across America, patients are denied the kindnesses and caring of a loved one at their sides whether in a sudden medical emergency or a prolonged hospital stay."
UPDATE:
On Anderson Cooper 360, Janice Langbehn discussed how her story inspired the White House to make this order. Langbehn received a call from President Obama today, who apologized for the ordeal that she had gone through at a Jackson, Florida hospital. She was denied access to her partner her, despite having power of attorney and other legal documents that should have granted her medical access. Langbehn's was not allowed to see her partner until just moments before her death.
Langbehn says that Lisa, her partner's death, "was not in vain." She appreciates the apology from President Obama despite not having received an apology from the hospital, which announced this week that they have changed their access policy to include LGBT families.
The Human Rights Campaign, a lobby group that specializes in LGBT issues has stated that they have been "working on the request––" with the White House "for months."

MEMORANDUM FOR THE SECRETARY OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES
SUBJECT: Respecting the Rights of Hospital Patients to Receive Visitors and to Designate Surrogate Decision Makers for Medical Emergencies
There are few moments in our lives that call for greater compassion and companionship than when a loved one is admitted to the hospital. In these hours of need and moments of pain and anxiety, all of us would hope to have a hand to hold, a shoulder on which to lean -- a loved one to be there for us, as we would be there for them.
Yet every day, all across America, patients are denied the kindnesses and caring of a loved one at their sides -- whether in a sudden medical emergency or a prolonged hospital stay. Often, a widow or widower with no children is denied the support and comfort of a good friend. Members of religious orders are sometimes unable to choose someone other than an immediate family member to visit them and make medical decisions on their behalf. Also uniquely affected are gay and lesbian Americans who are often barred from the bedsides of the partners with whom they may have spent decades of their lives -- unable to be there for the person they love, and unable to act as a legal surrogate if their partner is incapacitated.
For all of these Americans, the failure to have their wishes respected concerning who may visit them or make medical decisions on their behalf has real consequences. It means that doctors and nurses do not always have the best information about patients' medications and medical histories and that friends and certain family members are unable to serve as intermediaries to help communicate patients' needs. It means that a stressful and at times terrifying experience for patients is senselessly compounded by indignity and unfairness. And it means that all too often, people are made to suffer or even to pass away alone, denied the comfort of companionship in their final moments while a loved one is left worrying and pacing down the hall.
Many States have taken steps to try to put an end to these problems. North Carolina recently amended its Patients' Bill of Rights to give each patient "the right to designate visitors who shall receive the same visitation privileges as the patient's immediate family members, regardless of whether the visitors are legally related to the patient" -- a right that applies in every hospital in the State. Delaware, Nebraska, and Minnesota have adopted similar laws.
My Administration can expand on these important steps to ensure that patients can receive compassionate care and equal treatment during their hospital stays. By this memorandum, I request that you take the following steps:
1. Initiate appropriate rulemaking, pursuant to your authority under 42 U.S.C. 1395x and other relevant provisions of law, to ensure that hospitals that participate in Medicare or Medicaid respect the rights of patients to designate visitors. It should be made clear that designated visitors, including individuals designated by legally valid advance directives (such as durable powers of attorney and health care proxies), should enjoy visitation privileges that are no more restrictive than those that immediate family members enjoy. You should also provide that participating hospitals may not deny visitation privileges on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability. The rulemaking should take into account the need for hospitals to restrict visitation in medically appropriate circumstances as well as the clinical decisions that medical professionals make about a patient's care or treatment.
2. Ensure that all hospitals participating in Medicare or Medicaid are in full compliance with regulations, codified at 42 CFR 482.13 and 42 CFR 489.102(a), promulgated to guarantee that all patients' advance directives, such as durable powers of attorney and health care proxies, are respected, and that patients' representatives otherwise have the right to make informed decisions regarding patients' care. Additionally, I request that you issue new guidelines, pursuant to your authority under 42 U.S.C. 1395cc and other relevant provisions of law, and provide technical assistance on how hospitals participating in Medicare or Medicaid can best comply with the regulations and take any additional appropriate measures to fully enforce the regulations.
3. Provide additional recommendations to me, within 180 days of the date of this memorandum, on actions the Department of Health and Human Services can take to address hospital visitation, medical decisionmaking, or other health care issues that affect LGBT patients and their families. This memorandum is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.
You are hereby authorized and directed to publish this memorandum in the Federal Register.

Since when is a tax hike not a tax hike? Apparently when Nancy Pelosi uses political doublespeak to mislead the American people.
Watch this video of Pelosi's linguistic contortions as she argues that a $1.4 trillion dollar tax increase -- one of the largest in America history -- on middle class families and small businesses isn't one at all.
Any way you put it Suzanne, the fact of the matter is the Obama and Pelosi Democrats don't believe you should be able to keep more of your hard earned income.
They support confiscating more of your money through higher taxes to fund their reckless spending and debt, expand the size and scope of government and redistribute your wealth to their liberal allies.

In monarchies attempts to overthrow the sovereign were deemed treason punishable by death.
In a democracy the equivalent is attempting to withold the vote and so subvert the democratic process.
Why is it not a crime?
I propose that any person found to be wrongfully attempting to prevent a citizen from exercising their democratic rights be treated as a criminal.
That is arrested, charged and imprisoned for a period of time sufficient to reflect the gravity of the offence - treason.
In law there is an offence of attempting to pervert the course of Justice. This includes attempting to intimidate or persuade witnesses to falsify testimony.
I propose that there is now an urgent need for a companion charge - that of attempting to pervert the course of Democracy.
This would include attempting to intimidate or defraud voters of their right to vote.
The United states of America is the oldest democracy in the world. It must be free of any merest hint of taint.
I propose that criminal investigations be launched immediately into these activities and any politicians, political campaigns, software companies any one else involved.
In these times when the word has been much abused I aver the following in cold reasoning and careful consideration of the facts.

Sen. Joe Biden teamed up with the Clintons on Sunday for a rally in his hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Former President Bill Clinton and Sen. Hillary Clinton explained to voters why they think Barack Obama's Democratic ticket is the best choice for middle-class families.
Clinton told voters that Biden understands their lives, and that out of all of the people in Congress, he is one of the members who knows "the most about the economic, political and security challenges of America."
Clinton won the Pennsylvania primary in April, beating Obama 55 to 45 percent.
The New York senator blasted the Republicans as she made her case for Obama and Biden.
"To John McCain and George Bush, the middle class isn't fundamental; it's ornamental. They don't understand that we are at the core of whether this country goes up or down," she said.

Whatever the candidate wants it to mean.John McCain announced Wednesday that he would temporarily suspend his presidential campaign so he can help negotiate the bailout package for the financial industry. McCain canceled campaign events and announced plans to take his advertising off the air, but his spokespeople have still been appearing on TV, and he continues to raise money. What does it mean to suspend a campaign, anyway?
It's up to the candidate. Under election law, the phrase "suspending a campaign" has no formal meaning. It's used most frequently by candidates when they drop out of their primary race. There's a reason for that: If a candidate "ended" his campaign instead of merely "suspending" it, then he might lose eligibility for federal matching funds that would help pay off his debts. The phrase has been employed at least as far back as the 1970s and continues to serve as the most popular way for candidates to end their primary bids without closing down their campaign committees.
McCain is not, in fact, the first presidential candidate to take a hiatus in the middle of a general election campaign. In June 2004, both candidates for president suspended most of their political activities in the days following Ronald Reagan's death, although they did not pull their advertising. Ross Perot abruptly suspended his campaign in July 1992—ostensibly for good—despite projections that he might win as much as 20 percent of the vote. Then, on Oct. 1, Perot re-entered the fray, citing those grass-roots supporters as a motivation.
Perhaps the most dramatic campaign suspension came in 1952, when Illinois Gov. Adlai Stevenson interrupted his campaign less than a week before Election Day to respond to a riot at the Menard State Prison. Stevenson's advisers reportedly disagreed with the Democratic nominee's decision, which forced him to miss planned speeches in Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, and New York. According to the New York Times, Stevenson "followed a force of 321 state troopers and prison guards, armed with shotguns, machine guns, small arms and billy clubs as they stormed into a large cell house to end the uprising." The show of force managed to free seven guards who had been taken hostage and end the riot. Stevenson had less luck on Election Day, losing by almost 11 percentage points to Dwight Eisenhower.
It's not the first time McCain has suspended his campaign activities, either. In 1999, McCain canceled the formal announcement of his presidential candidacy due to air strikes on Kosovo, claiming it was not an appropriate time for a political event. The next year, McCain suspended his campaign in a more conventional way after Super Tuesday, although campaign advisers said McCain would consider re-entering the race if then-Gov. George W. Bush performed particularly poorly in subsequent primaries.
Bonus Explainer: How does a campaign pull its ads off the air? By telling the people at the TV stations or cable providers to stop running them. As the Explainer has noted before, an advertiser can usually get a spot off the air pretty easily. (For example, a sales manager at one Cincinnati TV station told the Explainer that he was able to stop playing McCain's ads in time for Wednesday's evening news.) But political ad buyers say it still can take up to 24 hours or so for other stations to change their advertising logs, and reports abound of McCain ads running in Florida, Virginia, and elsewhere.
For the ads he does succeed in canceling, McCain probably won't lose his money; instead, his campaign will receive credits that can be used for advertising in the future. But just as there was a slight delay in taking some ads off the air, there could also be a delay in getting them back on, given the advance notice stations need to place them in rotation.

Despite having some of the best municipal tap waters in the world, Americans consume more bottled water than anywhere else in the world. The oil required to create the plastic and to get the water to the grocery store is an unnecessary use of resources and is aiding in the global warming problem. As we turn to bottled water as our source, we run the risk of giving corporations control of what should be publically controlled water. Nestle is currently trying to get the rights to the water shed in Mt. Shasta, CA. As we gear up for election season, global warming is a big issue. According to Robin Hanson of Portfolio.com, Al Gore is the most electable erm candidate beating Hillary, all the Democrats, Giuliani and all the Republicans.
Seems you Americans are ready to get serious. Be nice to have you back in the Reality based community.
Quoting from said piece:
"Which means that InTrade's traders reckon Gore has a 58% chance of getting the nomination if he runs, and an 89% chance of winning the presidency if he's nominated, and an all-over probability of 52% that he'll become president if he throws his hat in the ring."
The blog article goes on to say:
"Meanwhile, the favorite for president, Hillary Clinton, has already thrown her hat in the ring, and is given a 48% chance of becoming president. (Giuliani's in a distant second place, on 17.6%.) Which means, I think, that Al Gore is considered to be the best presidential candidate in America, on a pure electability criterion."
He also just happens to be the best qualified person for the office.
Socrates said that any person who sought political office too readily was to be mistrusted. He said that only a person who sought office because they feared what others may do with it was acting from good intentions. Those Greeks, eh?
I recommend putting "The Assault on Reason" on your reading list btw. Some helpful hints in there for restoring the Constitution, saving democracy and so forth.

Al, I don't think you're our savior, no one person can save a "nation that chooses to be asleep" as spoken by Princeton professor Cornel West on Bill Maher's Real Time show on HBO on September 7th! You are just the best catalyst for positive change this country could have right now! Hillary is not our best option. Rapper/Actor Mos Def said it so well on that same Real Time Episode: "Hillary Clinton is just another form of dynasty to me. They passin? the presidency around like a party joint. It goes from the Bushes, the Clintons to the Bushes and back..."! He and Professor West have endorsed Barack Obama, but I fear he doesn't have the experience to have the support needed to win. (Maybe he would make a great running mate for you as others have suggested...)
As far as Hillary is concerned, it's one thing to come up with a health plan that says what everyone wants to hear but another to come up with a realistic plan to fund it that has the feasibility of getting passed by Congress! The Democratic Congress has been a disappointment. They should have revoked the President's authorization to use force against terrorism immediately...now we are facing more impetuous reactions to Iran from the Bush Administration. It has become impossible for us, the general public, to separate fact from fiction from an Administration that ?cries wolf? and a Congress that?s so scared of offending their electorate that they stand for nothing! I respectfully submit, dear former Vice-President Gore, that the handwriting is on the wall, and that the "Inconvenient Truth" for you is that this country needs you to make this sacrifice and run for President in 2008! Global warming and your other endeavors are in place, have a life of their own, and can't they be overseen by those who already help you? You, as President, are the best hope of your initiatives in this regard coming to fruition! You will have so much support you won't know what to do with us all! Thousands of us are tempted to write your name in anyway, so you might as well make it official so it will count!

Hillary is *not* inevitable if Al steps into the race. A new CBS Poll shows that there is no significant difference in support for Gore versus Clinton among Democratic primary voters (even though CBS has given their poll results a different spin).
Keep in mind that in the CBS Poll, 456 interviews were conducted with Democratic primary voters. The margin of error for this subgroup is plus or minus 5 percentage points.
"When former Vice President Al Gore, who has not entered the race, is added as a choice for the Democratic nomination, he emerges as a serious contender. Gore garners support of 32 percent of Democratic primary voters, while Clinton gets 37 percent, Obama 16 percent, and Edwards 7 percent."!
Given that the MOE is 5% and Gore and Clinton differ by only 5%, then this poll does not demonstrate a statistically significant difference in support for Gore v. Clinton.
IMO, if he declared his candidacy, his numbers would rise drawing voters from Clinton, Obama, and Edwards. Why? If he declares now or early next year, then his views on all issues - climate crisis, war, health care, etcetera - would get exposure and he would attract more voters. Right now most people aren't aware of his views. Also, if he declared his candidacy and announced up front that Obama or Edwards would be his VP - his ratings would rise dramatically.
