A “livid” Mayor Rahm Emanuel is refusing to speak with the owners of the Chicago Cubs after their father was linked to a $10 million plan to launch an ad campaign attacking President Barack Obama by airing the racially charged sermons of Obama’s former pastor.
The New York Times reported Thursday that Joe Ricketts, father of Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts, is working with high-profile Republican strategists through a new Super PAC, the Ending Spending Action Fund, on ads that would have featured the controversial sermons of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright of Trinity United Church of Christ on the South Side.
The Cubs desperately need Emanuel’s support as they attempt to get city and state help for a planned $300 million renovation of Wrigley Field.
“The Mayor was livid when he read that the Ricketts were going to launch a $10 million campaign against President Obama — with the type of racially motivated ads that are insulting to the president and the presidential campaign,” an Emanuel aide said. “He is also livid with their blatant hypocrisy.”
While Tom Ricketts issued a statement distancing himself from the plan — and reached out to Emanuel Thursday morning to tell him so — the aide said Emanuel won’t talk to him.
“The Ricketts[es] have tried to contact the mayor but he’s said that he does not want to talk with them today, tomorrow or anytime soon,” the aide said.

The evolutionary message – “what’s really happening” has always come from outcasts, said Dr. Timothy Leary. “The only thing I know is that I know nothing”, is a paradox attributed to Socrates, father of western philosophy. Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez, that’s what. Both players saw their stock as baseball players rise to meteoric levels.
In 2010, Tulowitzki won his first Gold Glove award. Baseball Info Solutions gave him its Fielding Bible Award. He didn’t captivate the world just with his glove. He garnered much of his attention from his Ruthian September, in which he hit 15 home runs and had 40 RBI. Only Babe Ruth himself had a better singular month than Tulo.

Cubs right fielder Tyler Colvin was taken to a Miami-area hospital Sunday after he was struck and impaled by the shattered bat head of teammate Welington Castillo.
Colvin is in stable condition, and there was minimal external bleeding as a result of the bat head, but it did puncture the wall of his chest. Sutures were required on the wound, and a tube was inserted in the area to prevent his lungs from collapsing.
He will remain in the hospital for at least the next two to three days for observation.
Colvin issued a statement Monday morning through the Cubs.
"I want to thank Cubs fans for their support all season, especially right now, and let everyone know that I'm doing OK," said Colvin. "I also want to thank everyone who has helped take care of me here in Miami -- the Cubs and Marlins training and medical staffs, the EMTs at the ballpark and everyone here at the hospital.
"You never want to have a season end early, and I'm disappointed that I'm not going to be able to make it through the finish line with the rest of my teammates. That being said, I couldn't be more thankful for the Cubs organization, my teammates and the opportunity to play for Cubs fans my rookie season. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."
Colvin was hurt scoring from third base on Castillo's ground-rule double in the second inning of Chicago's game against the Marlins at Sun Life Stadium.
"I feel really bad about it," Castillo said after the game, a 13-3 win over Florida. "It wasn't on purpose, but he's my teammate. I hope he's getting better."
Castillo uses a maple bat -- the type that have come under fire in recent years. Close to half of Major League Baseball players use maple bats, which have thinner bat handles than other varieties and thus splinter more easily.
"It's scary, that's the danger of a maple bat," Cubs infielder Jeff Baker said. "Thank goodness he's OK."

The Chicago Cubs baseball team is seeking Chapter 11 protection, a step that will allow its corporate parent to hand the team to new owners.
The team filed for bankruptcy in Delaware on Monday. The move was anticipated as the Tribune Co. looks to complete an $845 million sale of the team, Wrigley Field and related properties to the family of billionaire Joe Ricketts.
Tribune, which also owns the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times, filed for bankruptcy protection in December, but the Cubs were not included in the filing. The team’s brief stay in Chapter 11 is expected to protect the team’s new owners from potential claims from Tribune creditors.

Media conglomerate Tribune Co. announced a definitive agreement Friday to sell all but a 5 percent stake in the Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field to the billionaire Ricketts family, capping a tortuous process that began nearly 2½ years ago.
Tribune valued the transaction at about $845 million.
“Our family is thrilled to have reached an agreement to acquire a controlling interest in the Chicago Cubs, one of the most storied franchises in sports,” said Joe Ricketts, who founded the Omaha, Neb.-based online brokerage TD Ameritrade Holding Corp. “The Cubs have the greatest fans in the world, and we count our family among them.”
Tribune had announced on Opening Day in 2007 that the marquee baseball franchise and historic ballpark would be sold at the end of that season. But the process was slowed by CEO Sam Zell’s efforts to maximize sale profits, the collapse of the credit markets and Tribune’s 2008 bankruptcy filing.
The Ricketts family, tentatively selected as the winning bidder last January, had agreed to pay about $900 million for the team, Wrigley and a 25 percent stake in Comcast SportsNet Chicago, which broadcasts many Cubs games.
But that total was renegotiated, with Tribune retaining a small stake for legal reasons.
The sale figure exceeds the record $660 million paid for the Boston Red Sox in 2002, although that deal did not include a ballpark.
The successful bid was led by Tom Ricketts, 43, a Chicago investment banker and Joe Ricketts’ son. He is a Cubs die-hard who grew up watching the team, once lived in an apartment across the street from Wrigley and first met his wife in the stands at a game there.
Major League Baseball still must approve the sale, but that is not expected to be an obstacle. The ownership change needs to be approved by three-quarters of the league’s 30 owners.Media conglomerate Tribune Co. announced a definitive agreement Friday to sell all but... more

Greg Maddux probably the greatest, craftiest pitcher we ever had a pleasure to grow up watching is finally walking away from the game after 23 seasons, 11 of which were part of some of one of the most dominating stretch runs in baseball history when he netted 4 consecutive Cy Young Awards and led the Atlanta Braves to a division championship each and every one of those full seasons.
Greg Maddux will be considered the greatest pitcher we've had a chance to (without the cloud of doubt that surrounds Clemens) When Maddux got, old he simply got craftier, he'd outsmart hitters pitch by pitch and nothing ever surprised him on the mound.
He had an unprecendented total of Gold Glove awards.. and for him to walk away from the game, leaves a huge void that probably won't be filled in a long, long time.
Holding the retirement press conference at the Winter Meetings was quite convenient this year, given he's so close to home to have all of baseball press and executives there to see him say goodbye.Greg Maddux probably the greatest, craftiest pitcher we ever had a pleasure to grow up... more

A sad day in baseball and Cubs lore...
You might remember growing up seeing the Cubs in the mid '90s, come out of nowhere in 1995 after being a pretty lousy team for the first part of the '90s and getting off to a fast start that year behind the unlikeliest ensemble in their starting rotation: Jamie Navarro, Steve Trachsel, Kevin Foster, Frank Castillo, and Jim Bullinger... A team that finished just short of the playoffs in '95, it was exciting to see guys like Kevin Foster who had been discarded from three teams before joining the Cubs actually put together a winning season that year.
It's shocking that he passed away so young at 39...
He went on to pitch 2 more full seasons with the Cubs before injuries claimed the rest of his career.
But from '95-'97, he was quite the servicable starting pitcher for the Cubs...A sad day in baseball and Cubs lore...

In the grand scheme of things last night’s contest may not make a huge difference, but for a regular season game it was of the most well-played baseball games I've seen all year - by both sides. It also marked the first time since superstar pitcher C.C. Sabathia has been a Milwaukee Brewer that the Brew Crew has lost a game he has pitched.
Any game in which the balance is tipped by a good, technically sound slide into second base on a force play is a great game to me. And that is exactly what happened, when Cubs outfielder, Reed Johnson, slid hard and clean into Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks in the seventh inning.
In the Cubs half of the 7th inning, with one out and bases loaded...
