Rows over immigration which blame migrants for everything from lack of services to housing shortages fail to consider the role that migrants have played in fighting for more for everyone and creating great cities. Lesser – known migrant, but brilliant engineer Marc Isambard Brunel invented the Tunnelling Shield which paved the way for the underground system and the channel tunnel. This is the first of a series investigating the role of migration in the development of civilization.Rows over immigration which blame migrants for everything from lack of services to... more

Irwin Kula is not your typical rabbi. Known as both a provocative religious leader and a respected spiritual iconoclast, he has inspired thousands nationwide using Jewish wisdom in ways that speak to folks in all walks of modern life.
As a renowned thinker, teacher, rabbi, author and leader of religious pluralism, Kula says that the "Freedom and openness of America invites us to bring our traditions to the marketplace of ideas. The challenge is to translate these wisdoms into accessible American idioms that inspire and improve our personal and public lives."
Kula was ranked two years in a row (no. 8, and no. 7, respectively) in the "Top 50 Rabbis in America," in Newsweek and in 2004, he wrote and was featured in Time for a New God, an acclaimed documentary that was filmed as a moving monologue along the beaches, wharves, and roller coasters of Coney Island. He offers religion as a "giant tool box" for personal and social transformation.
He has worked with such luminaries as the Dalai Lama and Queen Noor on compassionate leadership, and has traveled and taught Jewish wisdom in places as diverse as France, Italy, Bhutan, and Rwanda.
He is co-host of Hirschfield and Kula: Intelligent Talk Radio and author of Yearnings: Embracing the Sacred Messiness of Life.

For over 30 years, the art duo of Peter McGough and David McDermott have been living as though it’s the end of the 19th century. From a townhouse in the East Village they created their art by candlelight, lived without modern appliances and traveled through Manhattan on horseback complete with top hats and the finest couture from nearly a century ago.
As painters, photographers, playwrights and filmmakers, the artists came of age during the same East Village art scene that made superstars of Keith Haring (their one-time roommate) and Julian Schnabel (who’s championed their work). Notorious in their own right and exhibited locally through Chelsea’s prestigious Chime & Reid Gallery, McDermott & McGough have been the subjects of countless stories told both in print and oral legend.
Though the artist’s are quick to dismiss the notion of dandyism, with the success of Lord Whimsy’s The Affected Provincial’s Almanack, which is being made into a movie starring Johnny Depp, and the trend of throwback American gentlemen attire and etiquette, hopefully more people will be introduced to the beautiful and artistic world that McDermott & McGough have created.

Veronica Vasicka is a photographer, musician, DJ and founder of the epic record label and on-line music resource Minimal Wave. As one of the founding members of East Village Radio, she managed the station during its pirate days and began collecting obscure and long forgotten gems that fell somewhere between the Cold Wave, Post Punk and Minimal Synth genres. Not knowing what to classify these bands as, she coined the genre Minimal Wave and set up the website Minimalwave.org as an online resource to share her finds with the rest of the world.
The response to the website was huge and shortly after its launch, Veronica began tracking these artists down and re-issuing their work on the Minimal Wave label. Most of these bands recorded extremely limited copies of their work in their basements and shared their work with the world via John Peel's radio show and a handful of underground music mailings. The music released on the label is a stripped down, DIY and purer approach to mainstream synth pop. Never-the-less, fans of New Wave acts, and bands like Kraftwerk, New Order, and Joy Division who are seeking something a bit different or looking to expand upon the familiar genre, will not be disappointed.
In addition to running Minimal Wave, Veronica launched the Cititrax label as way to expose newer synth-based act as well as obscure House and Italo classics. She DJs bi-monthly around New York City and every Sunday night on her East Village Radio show, Minimal Wave.

The paradigm of science has come to a grinding halt. Some are complaining that there are no big discoveries to find. Although technology advances at a rapid pace, these are simply improvements on previous discoveries. There have been no radical changes in the way we see the universe for decades...until now! The machines, which have been created by a collaboration of artists and scientists, have been designed to fall in love with punk music and show their appreciation through dance. .... http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=section&layout=blog&id=1&Itemid=27The paradigm of science has come to a grinding halt. Jeremy Willis is a New Orleans born, Brooklyn based painter and musician. Prior to moving to New York he spent time in Providence, living in one of those art squat lofts adjacent to Fort Thunder. It was always a treat going up there to watch the loft wrestling matches, play in Atari tournaments and throw bowling balls off the roof at abandoned cars that were set on fire.

You know what's really annoying? Teenagers. Even more annoying? Teenagers inventing legitimately useful things and getting awards for it. Meet Alexander Kendrick, the 16-year old inventor of a new low-frequency radio that allows for cave-texting, which isn't some fresh new euphemism, it just means people can finally text while deep underground. How deep, you ask -- well, Alexander's team of intrepid explorers went far enough (946 feet) to record the deepest known digital communication ever in the United States. What you see the young chap holding above is the collapsible radio antenna, though plans are already afoot to ruggedize and miniaturize the equipment to make it more practical for cave explorers and rescuers. Way to go, kid.

There are quite a few old, unused missile silos out there hidden from sight, underground. Ed Peden and his family have taken one of these dank, dark, deserted structures and transformed it into an underground dream home. The family purchased the abandoned base for a mere $48,000 and occupies only a third of the 20,000 square foot space.

Commuters in 44 cities in 16 countries around the world were greeted by the sight of other passengers removing their trousers and going about their every day business yesterday as thousands took part in No Pants Day.
The event, the dodgy title of which refers to the American pants, i.e. trousers, was arranged by flashmob group Improv Everywhere who says its mission is to cause "scenes of chaos and joy in public places" (though it should be noted that they haven't, as yet, fired laughing gas into bars or libraries). Participants were encouraged to remove their outerwear whilst underground, and to act "normally".
In London, the cold didn't put too many people off:
