Lady Gaga fans in the US can now take a university course on the pop star’s rise to fame and her global cult following. Lady Gaga and the Sociology of Fame is being offered by the University of South Carolina and will attempt to “unravel some of the sociological relevant dimensions'” of her fame.According to Professor Mathieu Deflem who designed the course, it is the only full-time course of its kind in the US. Professor Deflem told The New York Times that he was instantly entranced with Lady Gaga when he saw her on “The Tonight Show” in January 2009, he has since seen her in concert more than 28 times and met her five times. He owns more than 300 of her records on vinyl and CD and runs the gagafrontrow.net, a fan site with pictures and audio downloads of rare Gaga songs. Professor Deflem said that he was originally going to use Lady Gaga as an example in a course about fame and the celebrity culture, before deciding she was worthy of study in her own right."Then I thought, 'Oh, what the hell? Let's make the whole freaking course about Lady Gaga and her rise to fame.'" he explained to the university's student newspaper, the Daily Gamecock.He added that the course will "look at Lady Gaga as a social event", explaining: "It's not the person, and it's not the music. It's more this thing out there in society that has 10 million followers on Facebook and six million on Twitter. I mean, that's a social phenomenon."

Tiny Wofford College, the smallest school playing NCAA Div-I football, with only 1,250 students, almost pulled off a shocking upset of The University of South Carolina on Saturday night.
Playing before 76,600 football fans at Carolina's Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina, the spunky Wofford Terriers pulled to within 16-13 in the fourth quarter. But South Carolina managed to score a touchdown in the final two minutes Saturday night to edge out a last-minute 23-13 victory.

A group of students spent the weekend in a North Carolina beach house that belonged to the parents of one of the students, relaxing and enjoying the beach before the weather turned too cold. Six University of South Carolina students and one Clemson student were killed, while 6 other South Carolina students survived. Investigators believe the fire was accidental and that it started on a deck.
