Step 1: Learn
Did you now that in the United States, over 200,000 students are left victims of violence from their teachers or administrators! Every 23 seconds in this country, a public school student is beaten in their classroom by an educator. The "disciplinary" practice of paddling of students, otherwise known as Corporal Punishment, is still allowed in 20 states in America. New Mexico is 1 of these 20 states. Ironically, citizens, soldiers and prisoners are protected from being physically punished, beaten or abused, but, somehow students are not.
Marc Ecko gives us the 411 on corporal punishment here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3ZsY8EWc_8

Ratley, who was hospitalized for more than a month with severe head injuries, was recently placed in a rehabilitation facility.
The full names and phone numbers of the text message recipients are not being used because they are juveniles.

HONG KONG — Seven kindergarteners were hacked to death and more than 20 other schoolchildren were injured on Wednesday in an attack at a school in northwest China, local authorities told the state news agency Xinhua.
The attack occurred about 8 a.m. at a kindergarten in Nanzheng County, in Shaanxi Province, Xinhua said.
There were few details immediately available about the incident, the latest in a perplexing and horrifying string of attacks on young Chinese schoolchildren in recent months.
On March 23, Zheng Minsheng, 42, stabbed eight primary school students to death in Fujian Province, on China’s eastern coast. Mr. Zheng reportedly had mental problems, although most state media said no such evidence existed.
After a speedy trial, Mr. Zheng was executed on April 28, the same day that 16 children and their teacher were attacked at a primary school in the southern province of Guangdong.
The following day, April 29, in the city of Taixing, in the eastern province of Jiangsu, 29 kindergarten children and three adults were injured by an attacker with a knife Protesting parents took to the streets chanting, “We want the truth! We want our babies back!”
The day after that, Xinhua reported, five kindergarteners and a teacher were injured by a man wielding a hammer in Shandong Province, also in eastern China. The man beat the five toddlers with the iron hammer, then set himself on fire with two other children in his arms. The attacker died.
The following week, senior Chinese leaders called for better security at schools and harsh penalties for anyone harming schoolchildren.http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/13/world/asia/13china.html

Youth violence has claimed the lives of 18 city students this school year and left more than 110 shot. To stem the scourge, the Chicago Public Schools have launched an unprecedented campaign to intervene in the lives of the most at-risk children and create peaceful environments at the most troubled schools.
Among the challenges officials face is reversing a culture of violence that pervades Chicago's toughest, poorest and most desolate stretches, where pride is a fiercely guarded commodity and showing weakness just invites more trouble.
This mentality, shared by many teens, helps explain how something as minor as a bump in a hallway or a hard stare can escalate into a brawl — or even a murder.
"Sometimes you just can't walk away because it causes more trouble," explained Barnes, 17, a basketball player. "By walking away, you'll probably end up in a lot more fights."
Children learn the tragic paradox early.
"If you run, you look like a punk," whispered 11-year-old Kameron Autman. "Everybody is gonna start messing with you. Ain't nobody gonna respect you."
And in this world where violence often regulates the social order, reputation is currency.
"If they walk away from a fight, their fear is that they're going to lose any status they had," explained Deanna Wilkinson, who researches urban youth violence as an associate professor at Ohio State University. "If they lose that status they're potentially way more vulnerable because the next guy is going to think they can walk all over them."
Other factors are at work. Often, teens don't have the skills or know-how to calm a situation where respect is on the line, said Anthony Spivey, principal at Corliss High School.

RICHMOND, Calif. (AP) - Police believe as many as a dozen people watched a 15-year-old girl get beaten and gang-raped outside her high school homecoming dance without reporting it.
Two suspects were in custody Monday, but police said as many as five other men attacked the girl over a two-hour period Friday night outside Richmond High School.
"She was raped, beaten, robbed and dehumanized by several suspects who were obviously OK enough with it to behave that way in each other's presence," Lt. Mark Gagan said. "What makes it even more disturbing is the presence of others. People came by, saw what was happening and failed to report it."
The victim remained hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.RICHMOND, Calif. (AP) - Police believe as many as a dozen people watched a 15-year-old... more

Zachary Christie is a six-year old student in Newark, Delaware who is facing 45 days in reform school because he brought his new Cub Scout eating utensil to school for lunch. The utensil includes a knife, and this violates the school's brainlessly, robotically enforced zero-tolerance policy on "weapons on school property."Zachary Christie is a six-year old student in Newark, Delaware who is facing 45 days... more

This week a dinner lady at a village primary school was sacked for telling a child's parents that she was sorry their daughter had been attacked in the playground at school. Carol Hill had found seven-year-old Chloe David tied up by her wrists and ankles, surrounded by four boys, having been whipped with a skipping rope across her legs. Hill had rescued the child and taken the boys to the headteacher.
That night she bumped into the parents, who were friends of hers, and offered her sympathy. It instantly became clear that the parents had not been told the story by the school. Their daughter had arrived home traumatised and refusing to talk about what happened, with a note saying only that she had been "hurt in a skipping-rope incident". As soon as the school discovered that Hill had told the parents the truth, she was first suspended for several months, and then sacked by the governors for "breaching pupil confidentiality".
This is a new world, in which schools may effectively lie to parents about traumatic events affecting their children, and yet where the only offence committed is by a person who unwittingly breaks that official secrecy. It is no longer the proper role of adults, even those in a tiny village, where everyone knows everyone else, to discuss the behaviour of children. It is for the state to define who may speak and who must be silent. This week a dinner lady at a village primary school was sacked for telling a... more

Riot police shut down Palmerfest Saturday night after revelers lit several fires and attacked firefighters and police officers who arrived to extinguish the blaze.
At midnight, more than 40 officers from the Ohio University Police Department (OUPD) and the Athens Police Department (APD) sat near Rollerbowl, 28 Palmer St. About 8,000 people - give or take 2,000 - attended this year's alcohol-soaked bash, according to Athens police.

This occurred yesterday at Glen A. WIlson High School in Hacienda Heights, California:
"A massive line, two blocks long, formed outside the school and each student waited to be searched by Hacienda La Puente Unified School District Police before entering the campus. School police say that the thorough search came on the heels of a threat against the school that authorities discovered on an internet site."Yeah there was a long line all the way down there and the line curved around the corner. So it took about two hours to get everybody in school," said Khalilah Mack, a student.
"I heard that they left a message or e-mails. It was like ten students from our school that they were going to bomb or shoot someone. It was something like that," said Amanda Morrison.
Some concerned parents decided to take their kids out of the school Thursday.
"My concern is when they do have threats, let us know that it is a threat and not false information. Then they can take the right precautions. To me they should of closed the school," said Jackie Brooks, a concerned parent.
"Well I know that the school is trying to protect the kids. It is one kid's stupidity that causes all of this chaos. They have to have a better system, to keep all the kids in one class now," said Heidi Sanchez, a concerned parent.
The threat wasn't only issued days before the ninth anniversary of the Columbine, but also after the one year anniversary of the Virginia Tech shooting."

A message scrawled in a university bathroom - "Be prepared to die on 4/14" - left not just the college's campus empty Monday, but also those of two adjoining high schools and a pair of nearby elementary schools.
After the precautions were taken at St. Xavier University on the Chicago's southwest side, Malcolm X College evacuated students and canceled daytime classes Monday after a similar threat was found in a bathroom at the campus west of downtown.
