French photographer Guy Bourdin, one of my faves, was a master of composition and color, who not only took incredible still photographs of women but also transcended his visual art onto film using super 8s.
Bourdin's strong color contrast, highly sexualised photographs of beautiful girls is like soft porn with a dark and sinister edge. His other worldly creations are nothing short of being shocking, provocative and surreal.
His experimental films retain the same surrealism as his photographs but some offer a softer, more poetic character study of his subjects.
Bourdin is regarded as a highly influential fashion photographer whose work can clearly be seen resonating in many of the new and young fashion photographers of today.French photographer Guy Bourdin, one of my faves, was a master of composition and... more

Going into Thursday's vice presidential debate, Sarah Palin's former aides and Alaskan political rivals recall the candidate's jab-with-a-smile skillfulness and warn not to underestimate her.
ANCHORAGE -- When she appeared for a candidate's forum in front of a room filled with unionized Alaskan electrical workers during her run for governor in early October 2006, Sarah Palin arrived woefully unprepared. When the union members grilled her on labor policy, Palin faltered.
Afterward, a furious Palin cursed in anger and berated her staff, recalled two former senior campaign aides who blamed her unwillingness to bone up on workplace issues for the blunder.
But just a few weeks later, when Palin jousted with her two main rivals during critical pre-election debates, she was much more at ease. Palin distilled policy questions into simple answers and countered her opponents' attacks with verbal stiletto thrusts delivered with a sunny smile.
When one moderator asked about abortion and pressed about what she would do if her daughter had a child out of wedlock, Palin had a ready answer, defending her anti-abortion stance and deflecting the question toward her male rivals: "I would choose life. And I am confident you will be asking my opponents these same scenarios?"
During Palin's brief exposure to the high-stakes environment of political debates, she has unnerved both her handlers and her opponents. At times she has been handicapped by her lax approach to learning the nuances of policy and state issues, but she has also projected a Reaganesque ability to offer up pithy answers and charm on camera.
"The political landscape here is littered with people who have underestimated Sarah Palin," said Eric Croft, a former state representative who ran for the Democratic nomination for governor in 2006 and appeared with Palin during several early forums.
Palin's split-personality debate persona -- mirrored both in her confident speech to the Republican convention in Minneapolis in early September and in a series of wobbly performances in recent television interviews -- poses a challenge for her Democratic opponent, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, as each approaches Thursday's nationally telecast vice presidential debate in St. Louis.
Biden could face trouble, Alaskan political observers said, if he takes Palin too lightly. But he also has to take care not to be overly aggressive against a candidate who radiates telegenic appeal.
"She has a Reagan-like ability to win over audiences. But for someone who cares about issues and facts, it was rather startling to see her gloss over important questions," said Andrew Halcro, an Alaska businessman who ran as an independent candidate for governor against Palin.

Presidential hopeful Barack Obama appeared on the "Late Show with David Letterman" in New York on Wednesday after a day of heated debate by media and political pundits over comments some took as a slam against Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
Obama spent much of his visit talking about Palin and clarifying his earlier comments.
"This is sort of silly season in politics, not that there's a non-silly season, but it gets sillier," Obama said. "And it's a common expression in at least Illinois. I don't know about New York City. I don't know what you put lipstick on here."
Obama told Letterman the expression "lipstick on a pig" in this case applies to having a bad idea and trying to pass it off as change.
"Just calling [ideas] change, calling them different doesn't make it better, hence lipstick on a pig," Obama said.
He then clarified his statements even more.
"Keep in mind, technically, had I meant it this way, [Palin] would be the lipstick. The failed policies of John McCain would be the pig, just following the logic of this illogical situation," Obama said...

In an interview with David Letterman, Barack Obama defended and joked about the lipstick flap calling it a part of the “silly season” in politics.
“It’s a common expression at least in Illinois,” Obama said, “I don’t know about New York City, I don’t know where you guys put lipstick on here.”
He went on to explain, “In Illinois the expression connotes the idea that if you have a bad idea, in this case I was talking about John McCain’s economic plans, that just calling them change, calling it something different doesn’t make it better hence lipstick on a pig is still a pig.”
But Obama later said that if he had been talking about Palin specifically, that she would have been the lipstick in the analogy and not the pig.
“The failed policies of John McCain would be the pig. I mean just following the logic of this illogical situation.”
Letterman asked Obama if he had actually ever put lipstick on a pig, to which Obama said no, “but I think it might be fun to try.”

Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin seems to have switched colleges at least six times in six years, including two stints at the University of Idaho before graduating from there in 1987.
Federal privacy laws prohibit the schools from disclosing her grades, and none of the schools contacted by The Associated Press could say why she transferred. There was no indication any were contacted as part of the background investigation of Palin by presidential candidate John McCain's campaign.
"Our office was not contacted by anyone," said Tania Thompson, spokeswoman for the University of Idaho in Moscow.
Palin, the governor of Alaska, was born in Idaho. Her family moved when she was only a few months old to Alaska, where she was raised.
According to a biography — "Sarah" by Kaylene Johnson — Palin and three friends went to the University of Hawaii at Hilo after graduation from high school in Alaska in 1982. But they left after a few weeks because of the constant rain there, the book said.
The registrar at Hawaii-Hilo has no record that she ever enrolled, school officials said Thursday.
Palin, then known as Sarah Louise Heath, and a friend then traveled to Honolulu and enrolled at Hawaii Pacific University, a private, nonsectarian school. She attended only as a freshman during the fall of 1982, school spokeswoman Crystale Lopez said.
She was in the business administration program as a full-time student, Lopez said Thursday.
"We're trying to track down someone who knew her," Lopez added.
From Hawaii Pacific, Palin transferred to North Idaho College, a two-year school in Coeur d'Alene, about 30 miles east of Spokane. She attended the college as a general studies major for two semesters, in spring 1983 and fall 1983, spokeswoman Stacy Hudson said.
"We were not able to track down club affiliations or anything," Hudson said.
The school identified one of her professors but he did not remember her, Hudson said.
Prior to her selection by McCain, the North Idaho College Alumni Association notified Palin in June she would be the recipient of its 2008-2009 Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award.
From North Idaho College, Palin transferred 70 miles south to the University of Idaho, the state's flagship institution. She majored in journalism with an emphasis in broadcast news. She attended Idaho, whose mascot is the Vandals, from fall 1984 to spring 1985.
She then returned to Alaska to attend Matanuska-Susitna College in Palmer in fall 1985.
Then she returned to Idaho, for spring 1986, fall 1986 and spring 1987, when she graduated. Despite her journalism degree, she does not appear to have worked for the college newspaper or campus television station, school officials said. She worked briefly as a sportscaster for KTUU in Anchorage after she graduated college.
The McCain campaign did not have an immediate comment on Palin's higher education record.
Palin's biography on her Alaska governor's website indicates only that she graduated from Idaho in 1987.
A recent profile of her in the school's alumni magazine, before her selection to run on the GOP ticket, listed only Hawaii Pacific, North Idaho and Idaho as schools she attended. She also explained in the profile that her curiosity and love of writing made journalism a natural choice.
"I was always asking everyone the questions, and I still am today," Palin told the magazine.
