These photographs came about after a friend emailed me an image taken on a cellphone through a car window in Lagos, Nigeria, which depicted a group of men walking down the street with a hyena in chains. A few weeks later I was on a plane to Lagos. Abiola met me at the airport and together we took a bus to Benin City where the ‘hyena men’ had agreed to meet us. However, when we got there they had already departed for Abuja. In Abuja we found them living on the periphery of the city in a shantytown - a group of men, a little girl, three hyenas, four monkeys and a few rock pythons. It turned out that they were a group of itinerant minstrels, performers who used the animals to entertain crowds and sell traditional medicines. The animal handlers were all related to each other and were practising a tradition passed down from generation to generation. The Art of Bleeding produces ego-destabilizing programs on safety and medical education for both live and video presentation. To find out what American garage rock looks like (and to know what it’s like to be in an independent band) right now, VBS and Scion A/V toted a bunch of cameras around the USA and found a scene that was vibrant, loud, eloquent, effed-up, and nearly impossible to define. The musicians, artists, writers, deejays and label owners that we talked to could only be united by a single common thread—their commitment to music that they enjoyed, on their terms, at whatever cost necessary (or, in some cases, unnecessary). The Oscars are almost punishingly long and given to excess. Every year, it feels like the show gets longer and longer, and something always happens to derail the whole procedure. Occasionally, though, the confluence of performers and presenters makes for something genuinely surprising, whether it’s an unplanned breakdown in the show or a chance for an award-winner to get a lot looser than anyone had predicted. Those are the moments that everyone talks about the next day, and the ones that make the whole show worth it.

Attending a sprawling congress for Neue Slowenische Kunst's imaginary state proved to be a worthwhile exercise in traumatic participation. While it is almost impossible to encapsulate what the Slovenian art movement Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK) has undertaken, in all its manifestations, since forming in 1983, we could perhaps describe it best as an aesthetic apparatus for collective diagnosis. Its work - spanning music, theatre, philosophy, and statecraft - has served to diagnose multiple forms of repressed and sublimated desires lingering in the collective imagination: from the continuing but unacknowledged appeal of totalitarianism operating within the Yugoslav state, to the fascist dynamics found within the dynamics of pop culture....

Die-hard "Star Trek" fans may want to dust off their Klingon dictionaries and take a transporter to Europe for the debut of the first opera ever to be completely sung in the invented science fiction language. The opera, called "u," kicks off a three-day run at the Zeebelt Theater today in The Hague, Netherlands. Imagine a two-man band that used a droning Farfisa organ with primitive drum machines with plodding rhythms that were accompanied by rockabilly howling from the bowels of hell. You might raise and eyebrow out of curiosity but ultimately decide to pass on listening to tunes by such a band. Now imagine this band during the 1970's in the context of groups of Yes and Genesis and how people might have reacted to this outlandish and abrasive sound.
