Here I am, writing another post about the ever-ethical, always fashion-forward Vicarious by Nature. Below is their Fall 2011 collection, images of which have just been released. While you’ve got a bit of a wait to pick up the draped and dark items below, the men’s Spring 2011 collection is available at Neiman-Marcus.
[This post is mostly images of the collection. To see more, go to the main page.]

Shabby Apple, a haven for women’s dresses in all sizes and body types, is a woman-owned, charity-focused business and, more often than not, their dresses are predominantly made from natural fibers – three pro-sustainability traits that I love.
Shabby Apple has graciously offered to give away one free dress from their new spring line to one reader of Awakened Aesthetic. Your options: either the Bali Ha’i or the Kanani.

Fast fashion chain H&M was disgraced last year when, just days after the release of the supposedly eco-friendly "Garden" collection, news hit that NYC stores were caught trashing unsold clothing. It seems the retailer is attempting some semblance of redemption in the sustainable fashion arena with it's new "Waste" collection. The limited edition line is made from the leftovers and scraps of the craze-inducing Lanvin collaboration designed my high fashion designer Alber Elbaz.

I totally understand how fur-wearing could NOT be on someone's radar--before I became a vegetarian (and then a vegan), I never gave a second thought to animal rights issues. But in the 21st century, there is simply no longer any good excuse for wearing the skins of bludgeoned dogs, cats, seals and bears.
Today many top designers make faux furs that rival the cruel real thing. Check out some of the hottest faux fur looks on the market right now...I totally understand how fur-wearing could NOT be on someone's radar--before I... more

Known for my punctuality, I'm usually the girl people ask, "what time is it?" After my old watch broke last year, I've been relying on my cell phone to tell the time. But that's all changed now that I'm sporting REVEAL's stylish Chirukin Bamboo Watch (http://www.revealshop.com/products/chikurin-watch).
So why is this watch eco-friendly, you ask? Bamboo is ultra durable and doesn't contain the BPA or phthalates that are common in plastic. As you can see, it has a gorgeous natural color so there's no paint needed. Bamboo is also the fastest growing woody plant on earth and it grows without the need for chemicals or large amounts of water.
This watch is also fun to wear! I like the feeling of the smooth and light-weight wood on my wrist. It's versatile enough to work with all my outfits and actually looks like a cool bracelet until you notice the clock face.
For other styles, be sure to check out REVEAL's Luxury Bamboo Watch for men and Luxury Forest Watch made out of beechwood.
Read more about the company's sustainability initiatives on REVEAL's blog (http://blog.revealshop.com/) and their rePlant Project in partnership with American Forests (http://www.revealshop.com/pages/social-responsibility).

The first in a four-part review of Vicarious by Nature.
"The length, the shape, the way it zips down in front and cuts into a racerback behind – perfection. I loved mixing it with a menswear feel for this shoot, combining feminine colors and curves with a boyish flats and loose fit."

Green fashion isn't limited to the token selection of organic message tee shirts found at your mall American Apparel and Forever 21. This past New York Fashion Week saw upcycled newspaper sheets turned into a couture gown and digitally printed pattern shift dresses coming down the runway...
Today, eco-designers are doubly confounded -- having to innovate while remaining true to their convictions. If the fall/winter 2010 Fashion Week was any indication, an auspicious future lies ahead for the conscious style genre.
Eco fashion week (in it's second installment), was held at Village Green in downtown Manhattan, and NOT the tents at Bryant Park. Is the fashion industry embracing green fashion week??? And between ready-to-wear and avant-garde eco-conscious styles, will consumers buy into green fashion???Green fashion isn't limited to the token selection of organic message tee shirts... more

If you ever shop at Whole Foods, you're sure to come across some cool-looking t-shirts made by Green Label Organic with slogans like "Conscious Consumption" and "Grow Your Own." With the motto, "Respect Labor, Respect the Planet, Respect Yourself," Green Label's colorful collections of 100% certified organic tops are not only fun to wear, they support sustainable practices and deliver positive messages about the issues that are important to us all.
Green Label Organic is a family owned and operated business located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The company was co-created three years ago as a labor of love for George, a long time T-shirt designer who has always wanted to change the world, and his wife Rain, an extraordinary organic grower and lifetime environmentalist. After learning about the severe environmental impact of conventionally grown cotton, they set out to educate and inform as many people as possible to the importance of supporting organic farming and responsible, sustainable business practices.

Companies like EDUN, which launched in Spring 2005, have been pioneers in the emerging eco-fashion industry. The clothing line was created by Ali Hewson and Bono and founded on the premise of trade as a means of building sustainable communities in developing countries to help foster economic growth rather than provide charity.
EDUN uses organic cotton wherever possible: 61% of the Fall/Winter 2008 collection and 50% of the Spring/Summer 2008 collection is organic. EDUN sources its organic fabrics from Peru, India, Turkey and Uganda. Not only are EDUN products made in a socially and environmentally conscious way, they are also super stylish!Companies like EDUN, which launched in Spring 2005, have been pioneers in the emerging... more
