WASHINGTON -- Vice President Joe Biden said Tuesday that there's no reason that people should need to own an assault weapon. They're hard to aim, they're difficult to use. But shotguns, well, that's a different story.
During a Facebook Town Hall hosted by Parents magazine, Biden took a handful of questions from readers about gun violence. One questioner named Kate asked how gun owners would be able to sufficiently protect themselves if Congress passed a bill banning certain weapons and high-capacity gun magazines.
"Kate, if you want to protect yourself, get a double barreled shotgun," Biden responded. "I promise you, as I told my wife, we live in an area that's wooded and somewhat secluded. I said, Jill, if there's ever a problem, just walk out on the balcony here, walk out, put [up] that double barreled shotgun and fire two blasts outside the house."
The vice president said that by firing two shotgun blasts, anyone who might be trying to break in would be scared off.
"You don't need an AR-15," he said. "Buy a shotgun! Buy a shotgun!"
Biden fielded a handful of other questions about gun reform proposals. He said he doesn't support making changes to the Second Amendment and described America's "really healthy gun culture," which was a "part of my father's ethic." He clarified to another questioner that nobody wants to take away people's guns.
"I have two shotguns at home," he said. "No one is going to come and take my guns."
Biden appeared to get testy in some moments. When one person suggested that gun reforms would infringe on people's constitutional rights, Biden began his response by muttering, "How can I say this politely?"
He also described his younger days of shotgun use, which were around the same time he was driving around in his cherished 1967 Corvette.
"Still have it," Biden said.

So is it just me, or are most folks just ignoring this national indignation that one of our own service members was unjustly imprisoned in Mexico? Our own Customs and Border Protection told him he was all clear to bring his shotgun. After proceeding across the border, he is stopped at a Mexican military checkpoint. He declares his possession of the weapon. In response the Mexican military immediately arrests him. Our government failed to properly inform him, and now our government has done squat to bail him out. Shame on us!
Also, thanks to Fox News for actually highlighting this story or I would have never even known about it. It's like none of the other networks hardly mention it---what gives? Hard to believe this hasn't already been brought up elsewhere on Current. So is it just me, or are most folks just ignoring this national indignation that one... more

A man in southern Georgia, apparently fed up with all the wild hogs on his property but unwilling to spend unnecessary time outdoors, set up a complex network of webcams and powerful shotguns to solve his little problem.
The setup, believed to be the work of former property owner Jay Williams, allowed the user to observe the immediate area using webcams and then fire the guns remotely. The firearms were aimed towards a nearby food plot that's often infested with wild pigs. The guns were expensive Benelli shotguns, chambered for 3-inch shells and equipped with magazine extension tubes. For those of you who, like me, don't know the first thing about guns, here's what that means - those shotguns could have killed a ton of hogs. And then some.
There were two identical apparatuses in the area, for a total of six internet-connected firearms. A utility contractor came across them back in November 2010 and alerted the authorities. Homeland Security investigated to make sure there weren't any more sinister motivations behind the internet-controlled guns. In a recent bulletin, they reported their findings:
"At this time there is no evidence to suggest that such equipment was established for any purpose other than illegal hunting activity. However, the apparatus could be used for more nefarious activity that would be of direct concern to the law enforcement and public safety communities. While law enforcement has been aware of such capabilities for some time, very few agencies have come across actual clandestine systems such as the one found in 2010."

A 27-year-old man in Missouri has been arrested on charges of unlawful use of a weapon and driving while intoxicated after he allegedly used a shotgun to threaten employees at McDonald's, demanding the restaurant reopen and give him some food to take home to his pregnant wife.
According to reports, the man rolled up to the drive-thru window of the McDonald's in Benton, MO, shortly after closing time on Saturday. When he was told that the restaurant had shut down for the evening, that's when he allegedly pulled out the gun.
Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter tells SEMissourian.com:
“
He told the employee he wanted food and pointed the shotgun at that time... He said, 'If I don't bring some food home for my wife, she's going to kill me.' At that point, the employees didn't want to stick around to listen to any more demands.
”
The employees stepped out of the man's line of fire and contacted the police. A deputy responded immediately and held the suspect at gunpoint until backup arrived.
"The shotgun was loaded and there was a round chambered," said the sheriff.

A few weeks ago, I went with Kaj Larsen to Piney Flats, Tennessee to interview Jerry Baber for our show, Remote Control War (airing December 2). Jerry is like a messiah in the gun world. He makes all sorts of guns and gun parts out of his log cabin in rural Tennessee, but his greatest contribution to the gun world is the AA12. It’s an automatic shotgun without the kick. I think Kaj said it best…the AA12 is like the Ferrari of shotguns.
After a day of filming with Jerry and Kaj, it was time for me to give the AA12 a try. I’ve never shot a gun before. In fact, I secretly wanted to leave Tennessee without having to shoot the thing, but for the sake of the story (to illustrate how easy it is to fire), and to amuse Kaj, I gave the AA12 a go!
I’ll let the video speak for itself…
The AA12 (Video)
I have to admit, firing the AA12 was unlike anything I’ve ever done. I don’t think it’s my thing, but I had a fun shooting my first gun with the gun maker standing by to help me out!
I love my job for a lot of reasons, but trying new things has to be one of the best perks of the job.
Now I can check “shooting a gun” off my list of things to try while in the field!
[Also, check out Kaj's previous Vanguard story Fully Automatic America. Plenty of gun-firing in that one too! And tune in tonight for another episode of Vanguard at 10pm ET/10pm PT]

Nineteen years ago today, a Marine Corps Colonel was murdered at MCAS El Toro, California. His brother has relentlessly pursued the investigation of his death for all of these years. Guns, drugs, and a government cover-up make this a perfect crime.
(IRVINE, CA) – On January 22, 1991, Marine Colonel James E. Sabow, age 51, was found dead by his wife in the backyard of his quarters at MCAS El Toro, California. The Orange County Coroner ruled the death a suicide. Investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigation Service (NCIS) reported suicide as the cause of death. However, on a review of the autopsy reports and other evidence, his family and other medical professionals and forensic experts strongly disagree. Dr. David Sabow, a neurologist from Rapid City, South Dakota, continues the effort to clear his brother’s name, devoting much of the past 19 years and his personal financial resources to this cause.
Dr. Sabow provides support and convincing arguments that Colonel Sabow was clubbed to death in his backyard and then shot in the head with his own shotgun to suggest suicide. The motive for the murder was to stop Colonel Sabow from exposing criminal weapons and drug smuggling from and to military bases (See: http://www.colonelsabow.com/).
After hearing this story from another Marine veteran, I have to admit at first that I was skeptical and unconvinced of a government cover-up of the murder of decorated Marine Corps officer. My view of government conspiracies involving the deaths of President Kennedy and Martin Luther King, MKULTRA and even 911 is there mostly grist for cheap paperback novels.
However, after reading the accounts of Colonel Sabow’s tragic death now I’m not so sure.
Why would a Marine Colonel, happily married and the father of two children, with 28 years in the Marine Corps who had faced death countless times with 221 combat missions in an A-6 Intruder in Vietnam and no medical history of depression or PTSD take his own life and not even leave a suicide note?
Colonel Sabow, described by other officers who knew him as a straight as an arrow Marine, objected to the illegal transit of drugs on unmarked C-130 aircraft.
Relieved of his duties by Brigadier General Adams, Commanding General, MCAS El Toro, for some minor infraction of the rules and pressured to retire from the Marines, he told senior Marine officers that he would disclose all he knew about the shipment of guns for drugs at a court martial.
MCAS El Toro Closed in July '99
The unmarked C-130s unloaded their drug cargo in the Marine Wing Support Group 37 area in the southwest quadrant of the base in the early morning hours. This is the most industrialized portion of the base. Coincidentally, I know the area well. As a young Marine in the 1960s, I worked in one of the two huge maintenance hangars in MWSG-37. Even after 40 plus years, I still remember the distinctive sound of the C-130 turboprops keeping me awake in the early morning hours on duty watch in the hangar.
Marines were told to stay away from this portion of the base. David Hoffman reported that a Sgt. Robinson, a former El Toro Marine MP, and Captain Harries, the El Toro Provost Marshall, were told by Colonel Joseph Underwood, Chief of Staff, MCAS El Toro, when the subject of C-130s landing at the base late at night to: ‘Keep your ass off the airstrip at night. Leave those airplanes alone. Don’t go near them. Don’t worry about them.’ (See: www.american-buddha.com/semper.fidelis.htm )
