"In the wake of the hurricane, which hit the north-central Gulf coast in August of 2005, the State of Qatar was among the first countries to commit financial support to the victims of the storm. Almost immediately after the damage was assessed, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the Amir of the State of Qatar, pledged $100 million toward the rebuilding of New Orleans, Mississippi, and other areas destroyed by the hurricane. One month later, in September of 2005, the Qatar Katrina Fund was formed.
The Fund provides direct assistance to the victims of the storm in the form of student scholarships, health care, and the construction of homes and community centers, among other things. "We Are All Witnesses" includes a detailed report of gifts given, along with a complete list and description of the organizations and programs that received contributions. Several universities, medical centers, and non-profit organizations were included on the list, as well as housing projects like Habitat for Humanity." Winnipeg, Canada -- It was 2004 when Detroit-based Kibben Miller came across an Internet-based volunteer opportunity that he saw as a perfect fit for both his lifestyle and skill set as a video editor. Although Miller was initially somewhat skeptical of whether or not the Internet could be used as an effective collaboration tool for video production, he soon proved otherwise. In his first production, he successfully co-ordinated and worked with three other online volunteers he had never met. And these four strangers, who were dispersed throughout North America, collaborated to produce a compelling Video for Canadian charitable organization Macdonald Youth Services (MYS), which aired on local television.
And after three years of successfully navigating cyberspace as an MYS Internet-based volunteer, Miller has some inspiring words for anyone considering online volunteering:
" ... regardless of what they think they can offer or they can't offer, there is going to be an organization that will welcome your work," commented Miller. "You don't have to have extraordinary computer skills and an elaborate setup to make a real significant contribution to the organization ...," added Miller.
"Whether from the Eastern US in Detroit or on the other end of the country in Portland connected via a coffee shop's wireless Internet connection, Kibben has been there for us," stated MYS Online Volunteer Program Developer Randy Tyler. "Methodical, experienced and creative, he has been an invaluable resource both as a video editor/producer and consultant," added Tyler.
To learn more about Kibben's motivations for online volunteering, the rewards and what has helped keep him involved for three years, MYS South Dakota-based online volunteer audio producer John Small interviewed Kibben. Winnipeg, Canada -- In the fall of 2006, Becky Heaman of Calgary (Canada) had sold her house, quit her job and set out on a working European vacation of her lifetime. After establishing Dublin, Ireland as her home base, Heaman sought out a volunteer opportunity to help her get connected with her new surroundings. In her quest to find a local volunteer opportunity, she did a search on a Volunteer Ireland Web site. To her surprise, the search popped up an online volunteer opportunity (something she had not done before) with a Canadian charitable organization, Macdonald Youth Services (MYS), based in Winnipeg.
"I am over here in Dublin, Ireland. I was trying to find a way to get connected and volunteer here, because that is something I had done at home in Calgary, and in the search I found ... Volunteer Dublin, Volunteer Ireland and they (the Canadian charity) were listed as one of the opportunities," stated Heaman. "And because it was online, it didn't matter that I was over here in Ireland and it was kind of interesting for me to be able to find a way to still stay connected to Canada," added Heaman.
"Becky demonstrated the power of Internet technology and laptop computing," commented MYS Online Volunteer Program Developer Randy Tyler. "Selfless in sharing her precious vacation time with MYS, Becky would take her laptop on the road with her to work on a volunteer project and aim to connect with me via an Internet cafe from any place in Europe her travel took her," continued Tyler.
To learn about Becky's online volunteer involvement with Macdonald Youth Services as she toured from Ireland to Russia to Iceland, MYS South Dakota-based online volunteer audio producer John Small interviewed Becky at two time periods. Winnipeg, Canada -- After nearly seven years of online volunteering for a charitable organization 1200 miles away, Toronto area resident, Tu Loan St-Cyr, is taking a leave of absence from a charitable organization she has never seen. St-Cyr, who began Internet-based volunteering with Winnipeg-based charitable organization Macdonald Youth Services (MYS) in 2001, clearly demonstrates that an online volunteer can be retained for years if appropriately screened, assigned and recognized, even though the non-profit has never met their volunteer face-to-face.
"Never one to shy away from a challenge, Tu Loan is a dedicated, creative and reliable virtual volunteer, stated MYS Online Volunteer Program Developer," Randy Tyler. "For any non-profit organization, retaining Internet-based volunteers, like St-Cyr, is much more efficient and effective than frequently attempting to recruit new volunteers," added Tyler.
"I would like to share with you some great news and in turn inform you that I will be taking a leave of absence from MYS for a year commencing December of this year [2007]", stated St-Cyr in an e-mail to Tyler. "I will be taking a year off my regular job and would like to also take a leave of absence from MYS to concentrate on our newborn," continued St-Cyr.
To learn more about how this dedicated online volunteer was recruited, listen to MYS South Dakota-based online volunteer audio producer John Small's podcast interview with St-Cyr. Macdonald Youth Services (MYS) released a video about "The Global Directory of Web Sites that List Online Volunteer Opportunities". This unique global directory, which was officially launched by MYS in November 2007, allows any non-profit organization to easily find Web sites to list their Internet-based volunteer opportunities. All Web sites listed in the directory provide the name of the Web site, the site's URL, who is eligible to list online volunteer opportunities, the geographic area the Web site serves and if any costs are involved.
"The global directory was developed by MYS to allow any non-profit organization to easily locate Web sites where they can post their volunteer opportunities that can be performed via the Internet," stated MYS's pioneering Online Volunteering Program Developer, Randy Tyler. "This video will help to clarify that our directory does not list online volunteer opportunities but is a unique global recruitment resource for a non-profit organization asking: 'Where can we list our online volunteer opportunities for potential volunteers to see them?'," added Tyler.
"Making this information accessible for the benefit of non-profits and charities around the world will exponentially expand the impact of so many who wish to make the world a better place," commented Stock20 Owner/Producer, Daniel Rudd. "Stock20 is happy to partner with MYS by providing our music for their audio and video projects," continued Rudd.
MYS extends their thanks to online volunteers Gail Drinnan (Alberta, Canada) and and Chuck Brown (Ohio, USA) for their assistance in creating the video.

During 2008 a solar fountain will flow - and wild flowers will bloom - in a native plants garden that has replaced the lawn at the Lutheran Campus Ministry "Lothlorien" house for students at Northern Michigan University in Marquette.
An interfaith "Blessing of the Garden" ceremony included chanting, incense and other religious traditions from several faith communities.
Earth Keeper Initiative volunteer media advisor Greg Peterson has the story.
The producers thank Lutheran Campus Ministry student leader Sarah Swanson, NMU sophomore from Rapid River, MI for her videography and photography talents that helped make this video possible
(Marquette, Michigan) - In the spring of 2008 a solar fountain will flow and flowers will bloom in a northern Michigan native plants garden nurtured by university students that was blessed by a Buddhist head priest and a Lutheran pastor
A "Blessing of the Garden" ceremony was held in October 2007 at Lothlorien - the Northern Michigan University Lutheran Campus Ministry house near Lake Superior.
A heavy rain poured the entire day almost causing the ceremony to be moved inside, but the sun came out for 20 minutes and the rain resumed just as the blessing and a tour were completed.
Performing the blessing was Rev. Jon Magnuson, director of Lutheran Campus Ministry (LCM) at Northern Michigan University (NMU) in Marquette, MI; and Rev. Tesshin Paul Lehmberg, head priest of Lake Superior Zendo, a Zen Buddhist temple.
The Lothlorien lawn has been turned into a native plants garden that includes rocks from three of the Great Lakes.
The LCM house name, Lothlorien, comes from the Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien.
The garden includes Michigan plants and others from the Boreal border regions of the northern United States including Black Eye Susan, aster, dogbane, bluestem, and Sensitive fern.
Prayers, incense, bells, and chants were part of the ceremony that included a tour of the garden by NMU Student Michael Joko Rotter, a member of Lake Superior Zendo.
"Lothlorien is a magical kingdom part of what Tolkien called Middle-earth - where time passes differently," said Rev. Jon Magnuson, a Lutheran pastor, who founded the NMU EarthKeeper Student Team. Many of the campus ministry students belong to the interfaith NMU EK Student Team.
"Our natural native plants landscaping - our Lothlorien garden - is a sign of a new way of living with the world," Magnuson said. "It honors the indigenous and native plants of our region."
"Lothlorien came into being first as a song," Rev. Magnuson said. "The garden will be a haven for birds and other small creatures."
"The fountain represents the water of Lake Superior and the waters of our baptism," Magnuson said.
The Central Upper Peninsula Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans donated $1,600.
"Students are involved - and we like to support things that young people are going to be enthusiastically involved in like this native plants garden," said Judy Quirk, president of the Thrivent central U.P. chapter.
A fountain in the garden is going to be converted to solar power in the spring of 2008 and the sun will charge a battery allowing the water to flow in cloudy weather.
"We hope this will inspire people to learn the benefits that native plants have, such as requiring a third less water, and no pesticides or fertilizers," said Rotter.
Rotter said the "garden represents the hope of the future."

The Turtle Island Project in northern Michigan was founded in August 2007 by two Midwest pastors who believe the future of mankind and world is at a crossroads.
Rev. Dr. Lynn Hubbard and Rev. Dr. George Cairns believe that Christians could learn a lot about nature and the environment by listening to Earth-based cultures like Native Americans, Celts, and other Indigenous peoples.
Rev. Hubbard is a Lutheran pastor, and Rev. Cairns is an ordained United Church of Christ minister.
Both have extensive backgrounds in interfaith and multicultural work.
The Turtle Island Project (TIP), based in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, promotes respect for the environment and Native Americans.
Two Midwest pastors created the TIP to foster a national discussion and debate on a wide variety of issues involving the future of the planet and mankind including encouraging Christians to learn how to appreciate nature like Earth-based religions such as American Indians, Celts and other Indigenous peoples.
Turtle Island Project volunteer media advisor Greg Peterson has more on the founders and their goals.

Washingtonians - and others with big egos - have a portrait fetish that is obscene especially when it involves taxpayers money.
Even half that nealry 50 grand could have been significant funding for the non-profit Native American and environment projects I volunteer for in northern Michigan.
More comment after a few sentences of the article and a look at this portrait:
Portrait Cost Indian Museum $48,500: Senators, Trustees Question Spending By Former Director
By James V. Grimaldi
Washington Post Staff Writer
W. Richard West Jr., the founding director of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, spent $48,500 in museum funds to commission a portrait of himself.
The portrait of West by New York artist Burton Silverman hangs in the patrons' lounge on the fourth floor of the flagship museum, which is dedicated to the arts and culture of American Indians.
Silverman said West picked him after he saw a portrait Silverman had done of former Smithsonian secretary Robert McCormick Adams.
The Adams portrait, completed about a decade earlier, was smaller and cost about half as much.

Native American on Native American crime - much like black on black crime - is especially insidious because so much good could have been done for First Nations peoples heritage with this wasted and misappropriated money.
It's also a crime against taxpayers and common decency.
Spending $48,500 on a self portrait is among the disgraceful financial crimes of W. Richard West Jr., the founding director of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian.
For this crime to occur in the hallowed halls of the Smithsonian shows again thievery knows no class boundaries - and should be treated just as severely as the poor man who sticks a gun into the face of a 7-11 clerk.
The Smithsonian needs to be thoroughly audited from top to bottom as this is at least the second huge scandal to tarnish its once respected reputation.
No doubt it's only the tip of the fiduciary iceberg that's tearing through the Smithsonian's highbrow richly-protected hull.
I do volunteer work for several Native American related non-profits whose budgets are much smaller than even the cost of that disgraceful portrait.
And the suggestion that it could not have been painted by an American Indian artist is as laughable as it is sickening with a hint of racism against one's own culture.
Even the portrait stance is borrowed and unoriginal, as a buttoned-down Mr. West gazes thoughtfully off to the east, his coat hanging on a crooked forefinger and tossed over suspenders with his soft thumb and the remaining fingers forming the "OK" sign.
The Washington ego commands that a portrait much be painted to prove one's importance.
No doubt many law offices, banking institutions and the halls of officialdom are plastered with the self-aggrandizing crafty art.
Prior to the Polaroid, a self-portrait may have been necessary to preserve one's historic legacy but in today's world it's merely a measure of one's self-importance that is more often scoffed at than admired by those it's meant to impress. Perhaps, a modern definition of irony.
Maybe the next exhibit at the Smithsonian will be portraits of former executives doing the proverbial "perp walk" - cuffed and stuffed for perp-etuity. Washingtonians - and others with big egos - have a portrait fetish that is obscene... more

Avicena's science is well established and its products are safe and well tolerated. Unlike traditional biotechnology companies, Avicena's clinical programs are largely funded by non-profit organizations and government.
Several of the company's product candidates have demonstrated specific applications in the area of neurodegenerative diseases such as: ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), Huntington's disease and Parkinson's disease. In scientific studies conducted at leading universities, the Avicena Group's products have been shown to significantly reduce the specific symptoms and/or to significantly delay the progression of these diseases. The company presently has compounds in Phase II or III clinical trials for the treatment of ALS, Huntington's, and Parkinson's disease---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Avicena Announces Positive Phase II Data for a Combination Trial Involving AL-08 for the Treatment of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
Selected Therapy Can Advance to Phase III Clinical Trial
Palo Alto, CA, December 3, 2007 ? Avicena Group, Inc. (OTCBB:AVGO), a late-stage biotechnology company that develops central nervous system therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases, today announced positive Phase II data for a combination trial involving AL-08, the Company's second generation proprietary drug candidate for the treatment of ALS. The purpose of the trial was to determine which of two compounds used in combination with AL-08 would yield the most favorable results, so that the Company could proceed to a Phase III trial. Results were presented by Paul H. Gordon, MD of Columbia University in a presentation titled "Combination Drug Selection Trial in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis" at the 18th International Symposium on ALS/MND in Toronto, Canada on December 3, 2007. This study was funded by the ALS Association, Ride for Life, and the Russ Bowen and Spina Family Foundations.
The Phase II trial evaluated the neuroprotective capacity of two combinations, AL-08 and minocycline versus AL-08 with celecoxib, using group sequential design and a natural history control group for a futility analysis. The primary objective of the trial was selection of a treatment based on which drug combination appeared to slow deterioration in the ALS- Functional Score. Results showed that patients taking the AL-08/celecoxib combination showed a smaller mean decline in ALS- Functional Score compared to those taking the AL-08/minocycline combination. Results also showed that the AL-08/celecoxib combination was non-futile compared to historical controls, and merits further evaluation. The trial was concluded ahead of schedule after the first pool of patients met the selection criteria.
"We are encouraged that the AL-08/celecoxib combination showed less of a decline in ALS-Functional Score compared to AL-08 and minocycline and historical control. Since the difference in the ALS- Functional Score between the therapies tested was large enough, and comparison to the historical controls was non-futile at the 6-month time point, we were able to finish the trial early after just 60 patients," stated Dr. Gordon. "We originally planned to enroll up to 120 patients, in sequential pools of 60. Our ability to halt the trial early underscores the potential efficacy of AL-08, which can be further evaluated in a Phase III ALS clinical trial."

My two-year-old son Ryan was born missing the back part of his brain. While that was understandably a shock it was just as alarming to learn that no national organization existed to advocate for individuals with this birth defect called Dandy-Walker Syndrome. But the story does not end there.
Instead of passive acceptance of the diagnosis our family was facing we chose to embrace the experience and saw an opportunity to fill a worldwide void in Dandy-Walker advocacy. Almost overnight we arrived at the understanding that it was our purpose to advocate for individuals like Ryan who could not advocate for themselves. Whether by divine arrangement, destiny or fate we became accidental advocates.
In calendar year 2007 we formed the only national non-profit for Dandy-Walker Syndrome called the Dandy-Walker Alliance (www.dandy-walker.org), testified before Congress, worked with a film producer on a documentary that will debut in January 2008, were successful in getting congressional legislation introduced, were profiled on a local television station, appeared in numerous newspaper articles and congressional press releases and was even honored by being the subject of a speech delivered on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. However, the best part by far is the daily opportunity to serve individuals worldwide to provide educational materials and serve to raise the profile of Dandy-Walker Syndrome.
The journey was not always easy. Along the way Ryan would endure two brain surgeries and suffer from up to eight seizures a day that would paralyze the left side of his infant body. Ryan also does not talk but he does communicate. Ryan teaches, transforms and inspires. He is the catalyst behind the worldwide success we are seeing. It is not measured in dollars; it is measured in lives who were given a chance when hope had long sense been acquiesced.
I hope that you will see that there is a story to be told. Your willingness to raise awareness on behalf of individuals like my son Ryan will give a voice to a silent Dandy-Walker constituency who can not advocate for themselves.
Thank you in advance for your consideration.
