No Corporate Elections: IRS to Investigate Karl Rove's Group ?!

On Wednesday, Sen. Max Baucus called on the IRS to investigate non-profit organizations engaged in political activity, focusing on groups that are newly flush with corporate cash and strongly connected with the GOP. Karl Rove better get ready to open his books.

Sen. Baucus wrote a letter to IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman stating that the groups in question “have raised serious questions about whether such organizations are operating in compliance with the Internal Revenue Code.” He has asked for the IRS to help identify any tax laws that these groups may have violated. His next step would be to oversee his own committee investigation and “take appropriate legislative action” if needed.

Sen. Baucus’s much needed leadership has no doubt been spurred on by national campaigns demanding an investigation of Karl Rove’s so-called grassroots, ahem astroturf, group American Crossroads. Watchdog groups assert that Rove's group accepts millions from shadowy corporate donors and funnels the money into the campaigns of Republican candidates. As the mid-term election season heats up, this topic will only get hotter.

Bloomberg just reported that “Republican-leaning groups outspent the two political parties combined during September’s first four weeks in a bid to sway the U.S. congressional elections, Federal Election Commission reports show.”
In July, Salon uncovered Rove’s “grassroots” funding sources — four billionaires, three from Dallas, two with fortunes from the oil and gas industry.

Thousands of Americans have seen through Rove’s sham operation and have sent letters to Congress calling for an investigation of his American Crossroads group. Groups like American Crossroads Watch (AWC) have stayed hot on Rove’s money-trail. And they’re serious about bringing Rove to justice. AWC recently even put up $100,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Rove.

Sen. Baucus’s formal request for an investigation may just produce a lucky winner.

Friday, October 8 is Lee National Denim Day – a day when the nation comes together to put on their jeans in exchange for a $5 contribution to the fight against breast cancer, with the goal of raising millions of dollars in a single day. The power of the idea lies in its simplicity – just start a team with co-workers, clubs, organizations, friends or family and wear jeans for a $5 donation to the Women’s Cancer Programs of the Entertainment Industry Foundation.

Since its inception in 1996, Denim Day has raised nearly $80 million for the fight against breast cancer and unites almost one million people nationwide each year. Teams across the country wear their jeans in solidarity to show their commitment to finding a cure, and the campaign has grown into one of the country’s largest single-day fundraisers for breast cancer. It’s such an easy way to make a difference with just a $5 donation, something almost anyone can do even in these difficult times.

This year, actress Felicity Huffman, star of ABC’s Desperate Housewives, has been named the 2010 Ambassador. Huffman, whose character Lynnette Scavo has battled cancer on the show, appears in a new public service campaign that encourages people to wear their jeans on Friday, October 8, in exchange for a $5 donation to support crucial breast cancer research and support services.

To mark their 15th year anniversary of fighting breast cancer, Felicity Huffman and Lee National Denim Day released a video announcement of this year’s campaign. The video is titled “Join Felicity Huffman in Fighting Breast Cancer 2010” and can be viewed by visiting (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rq1eBIsJ74).

Since 1996, Lee National Denim Day has attracted many celebrities to join its cause as ambassadors. This prestigious list includes actors and actresses: Christina Applegate, Yasmine Bleeth, Patricia Arquette, Lucy Liu, Charlie Sheen and Pierce Brosnan.

Registration is open and people nationwide can sign up for Denim Day 2010.
