Part Kinky Filmmaking Cautionary Tale, Part "Lucy & Ethel" Sitcom

It was bound to happen -- only a matter of time before someone thought to exploit kink culture and the BDSM underground as a source of comedy, and in Permanent Obscurity, Richard Perez manages to do this. Even with the dark subtitle of this book (and the mention of porn and death), even as everything goes to hell in a handbasket with these two women, you expect to hear a laughtrack. In some ways, Dolores and Serena, the primary characters of this story, are like Lucy and Ethel from the old I Love Lucy show. Imagine Lucy as a 22 year old, pot-smoking, downtown dwelling wannabe artist and you have the narrator, the overly dramatic Dolores, who spins this tale from prison where she and her "ex-best friend," Serena, have been incarcerated for kinky shenanigans gone ridiculously overboard.

Here's how Dolores tells it: the two meet as refugee downtowners. Serena is a performer in a band and Dolores is a photographer. Both are typical young people with a creative edge who do their best to dodge the normal or straight 9-to-5 life and opt to live by their wits, which in the so-called "real world" is asking for trouble. After a disastrous exhibit of her photographs, Dolores tries to go straight with a temp job (at MTV, of all places); while Serena, the more adventurous of the two, is taking out Craigslist ads as a dominatrix. It's when they meet a kinky magazine publisher that a seed is planted; Serena has an opportunity to allow her dominatrix personality to take center stage while Dolores gets to photograph her. Along the way, the girls overindulge in partying, spiraling off into debt to dealers who soon start popping up like angry mushrooms. The opportunity to pay back some of the debt arises as Serena's fetish modeling career starts to bloom. She's already made a few kinky movies, and the idea of making one herself, of being "in full control," seems to follow naturally. The relationship between Dolores and Serena -- their constant bickering, and banter (incredibly foul-mouthed as it is) -- is what makes for some great situation comedy, finally leading up to their first real production. And, even when things go wrong then -- seriously wrong -- it all seems to go from dark to screwball comedy in a heartbeat. Watch Lucy and Ethel get high and botch their own dominatrix movie, watch Lucy and Ethel try to dump the sad sack evidence. The author, Richard Perez, exploits every situation leading up to the event -- then every situation leading out of it -- milking every opportunity for farce or slapstick. From dropping a corpse down a steep flight of stairs and watching it go thump-thump-thump-thump-BOOM!, to dropping a loaded Smith & Wesson, 38. Caliber revolver at every critical opportunity. These two are not Thelma & Louise, but fumbling, stumbling sitcom comediennes. The only real casualties of the book are the male characters who become comedy fodder in the presence of these tabloid-style "dangerous" women.

The E.U. finds a way around laws prohibiting sales of torture equipment by relabeling them as BDSM accessories

The European Union likes to cast itself as a champion of human rights, both at home and beyond its borders. So why is the E.U. allowing European firms to export thumbscrews, stun guns and other devices that could be used for torture to countries with spotty human rights records?
According to the human rights watchdog Amnesty International, businesses making these types of implements are flourishing in Europe and exporting their products in spite of an E.U. ban on the trade. In a report released earlier this month, Amnesty said firms in Germany, Spain, the Czech Republic and Italy were selling items like electroshock "sleeves" and "cuffs" capable of delivering 50,000-volt shocks, spiked batons and fixed wall restraints to at least nine countries, including Pakistan, China and the U.A.E. Amnesty, which co-published the report with the London-based Omega Research Foundation, says the companies are using legal loopholes to evade restrictions put in place after the E.U. passed a law in 2006 banning the sale of torture equipment. One tactic is to simply relabel torture implements that are on the E.U.'s list of banned products. For example, electroshock weapons like stun belts - which are placed around detainees' limbs and emit a shock if they get out of line - are sometimes renamed "stun cuffs," Amnesty says. Another scheme is to sell "dual-use" items, such as leg shackles and stick batons, which are allowed to be exported for policing and security purposes. The trade in dual-use products is meant to be closely monitored, but Amnesty says little is being done to make sure the devices are not being used for torture. (Comment on this story.)
Amnesty Executive Officer David Nichols, who co-authored the report, says E.U. governments are failing to live up to their responsibilities. "There does not appear to be any political will to deal with this problem and close the loopholes," he says. "The 2006 rules were a landmark move to counter torture, but the E.U. isn't doing enough to make sure they work properly." (See pictures of the global financial crisis.)
Only a few manufacturers are named in the report. An official at one company known to produce such items, the Belgian firm Sirien, denied any wrongdoing in an interview with TIME. Sirien makes products like electric-shock stun shields and S-200 projectile stun guns - devices that export manager Erwin Lafosse insists save lives. "If you want to ban electroshock pistols, then policemen will have to use firearms to defend themselves," he says. "The problem with Amnesty International is that they only see the bad side to everything. Yes, these can be used to torture someone, but so can all sorts of ordinary devices like knives, forks and spoons." Nevertheless, the company removed the stun shield and stun gun from its website after the Amnesty report was released.
Frank Coll, the head of another firm in Spain called Nidec, which was named in the report, says his company removed its stun cuffs from its website after receiving a letter from Amnesty International alerting it to the new law in 2006. "That was the end of the story for us - we have not sold this item at all," he says. See TIME's complete coverage of the 2010 World Economic Forum.
The report is alarming politicians enough for the European Parliament to intervene: members are expected to raise the issue at the body's next session in April. "The E.U.'s inaction is unacceptable and I'm bitterly disappointed," says British M.P. Richard Howitt. "It's complacency: the E.U.'s member states and institutions have taken their eye off the ball." Heidi Hautala, who chairs the parliament's subcommittee on human rights, has also pledged to force the E.U. member states to close the loopholes. "E.U. governments simply failed to take the rules seriously enough," she says. "It is shameful - the E.U. can talk but not deliver. It cannot portray itself as a human-rights model to anyone until it can put its house in order."
But for some observers, it's naive to expect the E.U. to maintain a perfect record on human rights. "It would not be the first time the E.U. is going against its values, and its own interests," says Andrew Stroehlein, a spokesman for the International Crisis Group. Stephan Keukeleire, a professor of foreign policy at Leuven University in Belgium, points out that any E.U. claims of ethical foreign policy were already undermined by the fact that its members are among the biggest arms exporters in the world. "We too often talk about the moral side of our actions, and we too often say we have a superior Western foreign policy, when obviously commercial considerations come into play. Remember, most of Saddam Hussein's weapons technology came from the West," he says.
But Keukeleire is hopeful that the mood is changing, in part thanks to Amnesty's report. "At least now there is more of a recognition of the problem. But it will take time."

David Carradine a victim of sexual fetish tried to practice safe BDSM

We’ve now seen a uncensored version of the photo of David Carradine’s body, and it reveals a powerful clue reinforcing the theory his death was an accident. The rope around his neck is knotted in front, used in the bondage community. BDSM experts say a knot in the front is a telltale sign someone is not doing themself in. The frontal knot makes it fairly easy to quickly escape.

David Carradine went to a Los Angeles sex shop he frequented just three weeks before he died and placed a large order for clothing, toys and videos. The owner of Susie’s Delights in Tarzana, CA, say’s Carradine was a regular in the store and owned almost every piece of bondage equipment in the store.

The last order Carradine placed a few weeks ago included women’s lingerie, stockings, a few pieces of bondage equipment and three bondage DVDs. She also said that when Carradine placed the order he talked to her for almost an hour, saying he was upset because he believed that his wife was unhappy.

Gail Jensen, Carradine’s third wife, says she came home one day and there were post-it notes on the front door with arrows leading into the basement.

Jensen says she followed the notes and found Carradine hanging from a rope, emulating Jesus Christ in body position. Jensen asked him what he was doing. David’s response: “I really would like a sandwich.”

Jensen says they were having people over, but David stayed in the basement while the guests ate upstairs. Gail says she went down to the basement several times to give him food and wine. Several hours later, he untied himself and joined the party.

BDSM includes a wide spectrum of activities, forms of interpersonal relationships, and distinct subcultures. While not always overtly sexual in nature, the activities and relationships within a BDSM context are almost always eroticized by the participants in some fashion. Many of these practices fall outside of conventional sexual activities and human relationships.

BDSM is often practiced within the context of a limited and defined encounter known as a BDSM scene. Such scenes often have ritualistic aspects, complete with modes of behavior, forms of address, codes of conduct, dress codes, and many other aspects of theater and role playing. As such encounters are often, but not always, at least partly sexual in nature, people outside of BDSM have a tendency to view it as a form of “kinky sex”.

Some participants incorporate aspects of BDSM into their everyday relationship(s) with their partner(s), especially those who practice dominance and submission or power exchange (especially Total Power Exchange).
