NYPD Threatens To Shut Down Times Square On New Year's Eve

Police in New York have announced a plan to block the city’s New Year’s Eve celebration, contending that its crowd control responsibilities in Times Square interfere with a more essential duty.

“The public forgets that New York is one of the world’s leading drug trafficking centers, creating an industry here worth billions of dollars,” a department spokesman said. “The NYPD provides the open playing field on which this industry can thrive.

“Due to recent staffing cuts, we no longer have the manpower to do that and baby sit an overflow of tourists in Times Square at the same time.”

Jack Clavic, president of the city’s police patrolmen’s union, agreed, pointing out that police corruption has become much more task intensive in recent years.

“Getting your cut of the drug money these days involves more than turning your back and keeping your mouth shut,” he said. “We’ve got to provide security for shipments, run errands for the big drug dealers, and still stage the occasional ‘bust’ for the news media.”

A spokesperson for Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who is spending the holidays in his Bermuda vacation complex, expressed outrage at the Police Department’s support of the drug trade.

“New York already has Wall Street,” the spokesperson said. “There is no need for a second racket. The mayor urges the NYPD to get off the drugs and get on the tourists. But none of that pepper spray crap, okay?

“And by the way, the Mayor also would like to remind the police commissioner that his envelope has yet to arrive this month.”

The NYPD, meanwhile, plans to take a page from the Occupy Wall Street movement and use its shutdown of Times Square as a publicity opportunity.

“The general public doesn’t realize that tons and tons of narcotics and hallucinogens smoothly pass through New York City and many of its residents every day,” he said. “That doesn’t happen without the assistance and cooperation of a dedicated police force.”

Who Smashed the Laptops from Occupy Wall Street? Inside the NYPD's Lost and Found

If you’re looking to recover any personal effects swept up early Tuesday morning in the NYPD raid on Zuccotti Park, epicenter of the Occupy Wall Street movement, there’s only one place that may have what you’re looking for. Only it doesn’t have a marked address.

The Department of Sanitation has a brand new building. Situated at 650 W. 57th Street – the corner of 12th Ave. and 57th St., in the wastelandish Far West Side –

This is where we find Isaac Wilder, head of the Free Network Foundation, late Thursday morning. Wilder, who we first met on Day 3 of the occupation, is an integral part of OWS’ Signal Corps, a working group that had been dedicated to providing free Wi-Fi to demonstrators within Zuccotti. During the raid, all of Wilder’s stuff, including the FNF’s Freedom Tower, a thin, maybe nine-foot-tall pole, loaded on all sides with nondescript routers that had been beaming out wireless access since early on in the occupation, was confiscated not long after he and another 200 or so protestors were hauled away after barricading themselves in the middle of the park. Matt LiPani, a Sanitation representative, tells us that in the raid’s aftermath 151 Sanitation workers carted away the belongings to 650 W. 57th St. in “our collection trucks.”

Wilder hasn’t slept much in the last 36 hours. He looks shelled, haggard. He told us earlier how he and many others affiliated with the Signal Corps were held in a separate “dungeon-like” cell below the main holding tank at 1 Police Plaza in Lower Manhattan beginning early Tuesday morning through Wednesday evening. But beyond that, his report from inside the heap holds true: No backpack. No cash. No tower.

Worse, it was as if someone along the way purposefully destroyed all confiscated electronics, a strategic smashing of at least part of the digital record logged by full-on occupiers. “Dude, all the laptops are in a row," he tells us, baffled and raking his shock of brown hair. Bloomberg Cancels the Thanksgiving Day Parade

New York - Mayor Michael Bloomberg has called off the Thanksgiving Day Parade, charging that the event is a public health and safety hazard.

Following a strategy he developed in evicting Occupy Wall Street from the financial district, Bloomberg threatened that anyone marching in the parade or observing the event would be arrested by NYPD riot police.

“Those big balloons and huge floats are nothing but a threat to the physical and emotional well-being of New Yorkers,” the pint-size politician said. “A giant Underdog, a humongous Spiderman, a SpongeBob as big as a building. These are frightening to little people, and they scare the children too.”

NYPD Public Confiscation Units have already raided warehouses throughout metropolitan area, where Macy’s, the parade’s organizer, stores millions of dollars worth of parade paraphernalia. They brought it all to the Sanitation Department’s garages for “inventorying.”

A sanitation spokesman said that Macy’s could retrieve its property “on the day after Christmas, so we can be sure that no holiday celebration with these dangerous objects will be forthcoming.”

In a related incident that occurred during the raid, Max Baris, a 67-year-old retiree from Greenpoint, died in a hail of police gun fire. Baris was attempting to take a cell phone shot of a deflated Charlie Brown balloon as it was taken into custody.

“We developed a new, more effective policy toward unauthorized photography of our brave police officers in action,” Bloomberg said. “We call it: ‘If They See Something, Slay Something.‘ You’ll be seeing that slogan posted throughout the city, and you’ll heed its message if you know what’s good for you.”

As to the Thanksgiving Day Parade, Bloomberg took full responsibility for ordering an end to the 85 year holiday tradition, but he noted that the initial idea came from Wall Street.

“The financial gurus pointed out that the parade costs the city millions and that we should be saving those dollars during these austere times,” the mayor said. “There’s going to be a little something extra in their bonus stockings this year for that gem.”

Citing similar health, financial and safety issues, Bloomberg said he is considering the termination by the city of such events as the St. Patrick’s Day parade, the Columbus Day parade, the Puerto Rican Day parade, and the Fourth of July fireworks. “Someone could get an eye poked out by those things,” Bloomberg declared.New York - Mayor Michael Bloomberg has called off the Thanksgiving Day Parade,... more
