Even with all the fall 2009 releases that were delayed into 2010, it's still been a heck of a year for games. Blockbusters everywhere! You couldn't walk to the bus without tripping over one, it seems. And with all that obsessing over the big-name hits, a huge number of worthy also-rans have gone almost completely overlooked by gamers at large. Well, that just doesn't sit right with us. Sure, we like the triple-A titles as much as the next batch of game-obsessed nerds, but we love the little guys, too. So, we've put together a baker's dozen of overlooked or sleeper games that you might have missed amidst all the furor. At the very least, they'll give you something to do before March hits and we're drowning in goodness again.

It would be difficult to argue that Nintendo is not the most important and influential game company of all time. No matter what you think of its personalities, its business practices, or its products past and present, Nintendo has been the central player in the relatively short history of the industry. Where other game makers enjoy a single era at most in which their products or philosophy were an unqualified success, only Nintendo has had three: The domination of the 8-bit era, the worldwide phenomenon of Pokémon, and the more recent blindside victory of Wii and DS.
And yet, the company is a bundle of contradictions. It constantly reinvents itself with the times, embarking on massive shifts in strategy to capture new markets -- or stoically resists change even as the rest of the industry passes it by. It develops wild new game concepts -- but is ultraconservative about expanding its development umbrella. It occasionally fails in the sphere of public opinion and marketshare -- but still generates bigger profits than any other company.
And on occasion, it gets very, very lucky. It would be difficult to argue that Nintendo is not the most important and influential... more

3D Dot Game Heroes plays like a tribute to The Legend of Zelda, complete with extremely similar enemies and gameplay. It has its own unique hero and story though, which slightly detaches it from Nintendo's storied franchise. It doesn't have to be that way though.3D Dot Game Heroes plays like a tribute to The Legend of Zelda, complete with... more

If his story is to be believed (and it seems pretty believable), an anonymous tipster to Engadget Japanese got a nice surprise with his recent Mac mini purchase: a Snow Leopard install disc. It's one of those vanilla hardware-specific install discs, dubbing itself Mac OS version 10.6, and clearly packing the goods if the screenshots don't lie.
This only adds confusion to the ship date, which has been listed as August 28th on Apple's online store, dubbed as "September" elsewhere, and obviously been totally disregarded in this specific case. No matter what, it looks like we won't have long to wait. Hit up the read link for a couple of Japanese-infused screencaps. If his story is to be believed (and it seems pretty believable), an anonymous tipster... more

Over on 1up.com, Jenn Frank (jennatar!) brings to our attention a forgotten classic (?) of the '80s called... Arcade Attack.
Not to give away the ending or anything but: "SPACE INVADERS ARE COMING OUT OF THE TELEVISION AND ATTACKING LONDON. It's like The Ring crossed with Ghostbusters or something." Must-watch. Over on 1up.com, Jenn Frank (jennatar!) brings to our attention a forgotten classic... more

The night Halo 3 launched, I brought my digi-camera (and my coworker Patrick) along to the 7-Eleven, where I'd preordered my copy of Halo 3 earlier in the day. Maybe it's a bad idea to invest your confidence in a convenience store. At the time, though, I didn't think about it.
But, upon our arrival at the appointed hour (midnight!), we discovered that Halo had SO given us the diss. Here's a short documentary film about what happened that night.
(P.S. The audio goes out of sync within the first third, thanks to some messy conversion poop that happened when I uploaded it. Ugh.)The night Halo 3 launched, I brought my digi-camera (and my coworker Patrick) along to... more
