The most amazing rock concert in the history of the universe will be on television Sunday, and many of you will likely have missed it. But for me, thank you very much.
Some of the biggest names in the music industry gathered at Madison Square Garden at the end of last month to perform two concerts to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A TV show follows as sure as rock ‘n’ roll rose from the blues.

What is the deal with the Super Bowl halftime show being geared specifically at baby boomers? Oh yes, artists of the last few years are rock legends (Paul McCartney, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen)... But once again an older group has been inked to headline the halftime show.
The Who
The Who? That's not a knock on what the group has accomplished as-so-much a knock on the NFL for avoiding any mainstream, current acts in order to avoid potential embarassment for a "wardrobe malfunction".
Yes, people will be up getting snacks or doing other things during the break in action, but if the NFL actually wanted to retain viewers eyes during that pause in the game -- they'd hire an act that was much more current and much more relevant than another 60's/70's throwback. What is the deal with the Super Bowl halftime show being geared specifically at baby... more

A group of prominent musicians are joining a campaign to close Guantanamo Bay and demanding the release of records about what music was used during the potential torture of detainees there and at other facilities.
Some of the more famous names in the music industry are formally lending their prestige to an effort being led by retired generals, progressive groups and a former member of Congress to shut GITMO down. The list includes Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Jackson Browne, Rise Against, Rosanne Cash, Billy Bragg and the Roots, all of whom are joining the broader National Campaign to Close Guantanamo which was launched earlier in the week.
Hoping to cast further light on the potential illegalities that took place at the detention facility, the group is also working to obtain records about why and how music was used (under laws authorized by the Bush administration) to effectively torture suspected terrorists. The musicians have officially endorsed a Freedom of Information Act request for the declassification of all secret government records pertaining to music utilized during interrogations. At least two members of the coalition, Reznor and Morello, have had their music linked to interrogations.
"Guantanamo is known around the world as one of the places where human beings have been tortured -- from water boarding, to stripping, hooding and forcing detainees into humiliating sexual acts -- playing music for 72 hours in a row at volumes just below that to shatter the eardrums," said Morello, in a statement provided by the NCCG. "Guantanamo may be Dick Cheney's idea of America, but it's not mine. The fact that music I helped create was used in crimes against humanity sickens me -- we need to end torture and close Guantanamo now."
The National Security Archives will be officially filing the FOIA request on behalf of the National Campaign to Close Guantanamo (NCCG)

Blink and you'd have missed out; tickets for Glastonbury #40 sold out on Sunday less than a day after going on sale
Fans of the festival had cough up nearly £200 for a ticket for next year's five day event in Somerset, despite no acts being confirmed in the line-up. But the Eavis family who run the event say they plan to get artists that span the 40 year history of the festival to perform in 2010.
A day on there have been the usual reports of technical problems with the website and stories of some hopefuls who spent hours tied up on phone calls only to be disappointed. Were you one of them, or did you get a ticket?
And if so which bands and artists would you like to see perform in 2010?Blink and you'd have missed out; tickets for Glastonbury #40 sold out on Sunday less... more

Seeger has stood up for almost every meaningful cause: labor unions in the 1940s, civil rights in the ‘50s, the anti-war movement in the ’60s and more recently against the American invasion of Iraq.
Whether you agree with his stances or not, you have to admire his guts. The Pete Seeger quote I most admire came after he testified before the infamous House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). He was indicted on ten counts of contempt of Congress. He expected to go to jail. But his response:
“I still feel I committed no wrong, and that my children will not feel ashamed of me in future years.”
Politics aside, this is still the musical event of the year.Seeger has stood up for almost every meaningful cause: labor unions in the 1940s,... more

Ricordate il protagonista di Febbre a 90° di Nick Hornby? Era un uomo pronto a sacrificare tutto per dedicare la sua totale devozione alla squadra del cuore. Bruce Springsteen is now The Boss of Glastonbury after a two-and-a-half hour crowd-pleasing set.
He played Hits like Dancing in the Dark, Glory Days and Born To Run which had fans moving as the star made his first UK festival appearance at the Somerset event.
British fans got close when he repeated runs from the stage to sing right next to the front row.
"He was down with his fans and cared that he was here," stated 28-year-old Siobhan Farmer, who was in the crowd.
"I wasn't a fan before but he certainly puts energy into it."
Farmer's friend Anna Burgess, 23, added: "I knew nothing of Bruce but it was the best gig of the festival so far. His passion made it. It was brilliant."
Earlier on, Springsteen had a surprise appearance on one song with The Gaslight Anthem during their slot on the John Peel Stage, the traditional home of new bands at the festival.Bruce Springsteen is now The Boss of Glastonbury after a two-and-a-half hour... more

People using Amazon's online music download service were able to download albums by top artists for just 29p on Wednesday after a mistake by the online giant.
Amazon by accident cut the prices of releases such as Kings Of Leon's Because Of The Times and Lily Allen's It's Not Me, It's You. This mistake, which was publicised by several consumer websites, was rectified after about four hours.
Albums by Bruce Springsteen, Calvin Harris and James Morrison were also among the 30 or so being sold at the cut price.
Amazon made a statement which said: "We can confirm that yesterday there was a pricing error on a small number of MP3 albums. This issue has been rectified. It's hard to believe, but David Crosby, an artist celebrated for his liberal activism as much as for inspired songwriting, will attend his first-ever Democratic National Convention, in Denver next week.
Musician David Crosby performs during a benefit concert for the City Parks Foundation at Central Park Summer Stage, Tuesday, July 29, 2008, in New York.
(AP Photo/Diane Bondareff)"Usually the people who try to get celebrities to come around to conventions and stuff want bigger ones than me," Crosby said via telephone from his Santa Barbara, Calif., home earlier this week. "They want Jennifer Lopez or something."
And mind you, Crosby won't attend the convention itself. He's going to the Buell Theatre to play an etown show Tuesday with buddies Graham Nash, James Taylor and Ani DiFranco.
"I don't like most politicians, so I don't see what the attraction is to go and be in the middle of a bunch of them," Crosby said. "I'm definitely not going to the convention. I'm going to etown. I have a very high opinion of etown. They're good people, and they do really good work. And I don't think you can say that about most politicians."
What about the dude getting ready to accept the Democratic nomination?
"I think he's a very encouraging guy, a very intelligent man - which is, of course, a complete 180 degree shift from where we've been the last eight years," Crosby said. "The idea of having a guy who can speak in complete sentences is extremely attractive Barack has dignity and moral values, and I believe he loves his country."
Crosby is just one of many musicians making their way to the Mile High City in the next 10 days. Conventions have grown into media circuses where entertainers and politicos share the same ground for a few days. It's going to be an incredibly busy music week in Denver with performers as varied as Willie Nelson and the Black Eyed Peas, Fall Out Boy and Rage Against the Machine, Daughtry and Melissa Etheridge, the Blue Scholars and Silversun Pickups, Moby and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - and maybe Dave Matthews, Kanye West and Bruce Springsteen.
While some bold names will be in Denver all week - playing this party, getting spotted at that party, hobnobbing at another party - Crosby is fine with getting in and out.
"I have a friend who does a show on Air America, David Bender, and I'll probably do his show while I'm there," said Crosby. "If we get roped into something else, we get roped into something else."
Crosby understands the weight of the current presidential race, not to mention the great divide in America today. There's a scene in the recent Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young documentary, "Déj... Vu," that films angry fans leaving in the middle of a CSNY concert in Atlanta as the group spoke against President Bush and sang songs such as "Let's Impeach the President." The group knew their political views would make an impact in the South, and that's why they were filming it for the documentary, but they didn't know the reaction would be so severe.
"When you look at the people, the ones who were disgruntled, they're not the people who I really give a (expletive) about," Crosby said. "Truth is, it's good to stir things up. It's good to make people have a dialogue with each other, even if it starts out with people yelling and pointing fingers."
When asked about the dichotomy of an artist-fan relationship - they love your music but not your personality or politics - Crosby changed his tune a bit.
"I do give a (expletive) about them, but I think they're kind of funny when they come to a CSNY concert and get mad about there being politics," he said. "I don't have a lot of sympathy for them. We've been probably the most political band in the world - or at least one of them. Anybody who comes to a concert of ours and expects us to not be anti-war and pro-human and anti-George Bush is crazy. They should have gone to a different concert."
