"The 13th of September 2007 will be remembered as an international human rights day for the indigenous peoples of the world," said Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, chairperson of the Permanent Forum, in an emotional tone filled with joy.
International civil society groups working for the rights of indigenous peoples also expressed extreme pleasure with Thursday's vote.
The United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand stood alone in voting against the resolution.
"The entire wealth of the United States, Canada, and other so-called modern states is built on the poverty and human rights violations of their indigenous peoples," said Manuel. "The international community needs to understand how hypocritical Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States are.""The 13th of September 2007 will be remembered as an international human rights... more

I know I keep saying it, but this is truly a "MUST SEE" film.
This was one of the first documentaries to really spell out how exactly the IMF works in third world countries. The way the agricultural infrastructure was retooled, food soverienty destroyed and dependence created. Its no accident that when international lenders issue billions of highly qualifies money to underdeveloped countries that they almost always endup bankrupt and internally restructured for export.
Feature film linked below. Enjoy!

Another must see movie, "Rabbit Proof Fence" will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
For more than a century and right up to the late 1960s, on government orders, Aboriginal children with white blood in their veins were snatched from their mothers and placed in orphanages, mission stations or with foster families who were supposed to make good little Australians out of them. The slogan in those days was "keep Australia white." And after the genocide by the early settlers and the semi-slavery of the reserves, all that remained to be done with these "sub-humans" was to make them forget where they came from and who they were, to assimilate them by force right from the cradle.
The Commonwealth conference on the native problem in 1937 did not mince its words: "The destiny of the natives of Aboriginal origin but not of the full blood lies in their ultimate absorption." It restated its views in 1951: "The aim is assimilation...until the Aborigines live like any white Australian." The police and Protectors were given authority to raid communities and remove all children with light skins. Desperate Aborigine mothers blackened their children's faces with charcoal or sent them to hide out in the bush.
The Chief Protectors appointed by each state became the legal guardians of the half-caste children until they reached the age of 18. Some of their reports speak louder than words. "I would not hesitate for one moment to separate any half-caste from its [sic] Aboriginal mother, no matter how frantic her momentary grief might be at the time. They soon forget their offspring," said Inspector James Idell in 1905. In 1911, Chief Protector Cook stated that "Children are removed from the evil influence of the Aboriginal camp, with its lack of moral training and its risk of serious organic infectious disease."Another must see movie, "Rabbit Proof Fence" will keep you on the edge of... more

One of the most controversial and provocative films ever, Fahrenheit 9/11 is Academy Award-winning filmmaker Michael Moore's searing examination of the Bush administration's actions in the wake of the tragic events of 9/11. With his characteristic humor and dogged commitment to uncovering the facts, Moore considers the presidency of George W. Bush and where it has led us. He looks at how - and why - Bush and his inner circle avoided pursuing the Saudi connection to 9/11, despite the fact that 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudis and Saudi money had funded Al Qaeda. Fahrenheit 9/11 shows us a nation kept in constant fear by FBI alerts and lulled into accepting a piece of legislation, the USA Patriot Act, that infringes on basic civil rights. It is in this atmosphere of confusion, suspicion and dread that the Bush Administration makes its headlong rush towards war in Iraq - and Fahrenheit 9/11 takes us inside that war to tell the stories we haven't heard, illustrating the awful human cost to U.S. soldiers and their families. One of the most controversial and provocative films ever, Fahrenheit 9/11 is Academy... more

In Neil Young's, "The Restless Consumer," the third track on his 2006 CD, "Living With War," the veteran rocker rails against the corrosive influence of America's consumer culture by repeating, again and again, "Don't want no more lies."
That plaintive refrain sums up my own sentiments about practically everything seen on commercial television and in the movies these days, as well as what's printed in most newspapers and aired on the radio.
Today, Corporate America, ably aided and abetted by its ingenious Madison Avenue marketing strategists, offers a quick fix for just about every fear, weakness, obsession, and troublesome condition known to humankind.
Young and awkward? Drink Coors Beer, you'll be the life of the party. Worried about under-performing in the bedroom? There's a little purple pill made just for that. Got unsightly wrinkles? Try "Wrinkles-Away," it works like a charm. And, finally, want to impress that special someone with an enduring token of your affection? Give her diamonds, the gift that will last forever.
But Young was protesting more than just the herding of an entire people into the cattle pen of mindless consumerism. He was also singing about the making and marketing of criminal wars, such as the current one in the Middle East that Washington sold to the American people. In Neil Young's, "The Restless Consumer," the third track on his... more

Cuba, an isolated island nation, rebuilt its quality of life following the collapse of cheap oil, supplied by the former Soviet Union. This fascinating and empowering film shows how communities pulled together, created solutions, and ultimately thrived in spite of their decreased dependence on imported energy.
This also gives us an excellent example of how to deal with the crisis that is facing us, how to survive after oil becomes unavailable, how to feed ourselves and empower farmers.
