Formula One's governing body FIA has promised to launch an inquiry after the ugly face of Spanish racism reared its head once again at the Circuit de Catalunya on two Sundays ago.
Images of a fan wearing a McLaren-Mercedes shirt, with his face blacked-up, bore clear echoes of the scenes that took place in winter testing last February, when Lewis Hamilton suffered racist abuse from a section of supporters.
While the incident was in isolation – with just one offender witnessed on the day out of nearly 100,000 spectators – millions of viewers saw the incident during the BBC's live television coverage.
While that was the overriding opinion from paddock-goers, questions are sure to be asked of the circuit and of Spanish sport in general.
A website featuring more than 16,000 messages using racist terms were posted on a Spanish website before the Brazilian Grand Prix last autumn, while England's footballers were subjected to racist chants during a friendly against Spain at Real Madrid's Bernabeu in 2004.
The same year former Spanish coach Luis Aragones was fined more than £2,000 for making racist remarks about former Arsenal player Thierry Henry, whom ironically, now plays for FC Barcelona.
note:
by posting this article, i am in no way implying that all/most Spanish citizens are racist. I love Barcelona. however, there is a small, tasteless minority in Spain that ironically, only aim their racism at opposing teams with black players, while unknowingly offending their own team's black players. there are idiots everywhere, some more politically correct than others.Formula One's governing body FIA has promised to launch an inquiry after the ugly... more

Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton talks to BILD "Brazil was the most intensive race of my life!"
By Dorothea Jantschke and Frank Schneider
The grin on Lewis Hamilton's face as he enters the Hilton Hotel in Sao Paolo is enormous despite it being 11.30 on a Monday morning - and well it should be for the new Formula 1 world champion.
At 23, the McLaren-Mercedes star is the youngest ever title winner following Sunday's dramatic Brazilian Grand Prix, where he overtook Timo Glock on the last lap to secure enough points. He told BILD what a crazy time it had been since then.

Ferrari will review its participation in Formula One if plans to introduce a standard engine for all teams from 2010 goes ahead.
Formula One's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), said earlier this month it intended to bring in the rule to save costs.
But the Ferrari board struck a blow against the move in a statement on Monday.
"The board of Ferrari, confirming its full support for the substantial and necessary reduction in costs starting with engines, has however expressed strong reservations about the project to equalise or standardise engines," the statement said.
"The board reserves the right to consider, together with our partners, our presence in this discipline."
Double haul
Ferrari, controlled by Italian car firm Fiat, won last year's world constructors' championship and their driver Kimi Raikkonen took the individual title.
His teammate Felipe Massa is in the running for this season's title, with the final Grand Prix taking place in Brazil on Sunday.
He trails McLaren's championship leader Lewis Hamilton by seven points.
The FIA issued a statement before this month's Chinese Grand Prix announcing a tender for "a third-party supplier of engines and transmission systems" to be used by all teams in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Cost slashing
The body has argued that the costs of Formula One are unsustainable in the current economic climate and must be slashed to ensure none of the 10 teams leave the sport.
But Ferrari 's board are not impressed with the standard engine idea.
"The (board) felt that such a move would detract from the entire raison d'etre of a sport with which Ferrari has been involved continuously since 1950, a raison d'etre based principally on competition and technology development," the statement read.
Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has backed the FIA's standard engine proposal and rejected suggestions that it might push some manufacturers towards the exit.
"I don't see why (manufacturers) should leave, we're saving them an awful lot of money I hope. All the technical things will still be there, they can show all of their talent," he said this month.

For a driver with a five point lead going into the last two races of the Formula 1 season, Lewis Hamilton is under a lot of pressure.
Rivals and critics alike are eagerly looking for signs that the 23-year-old McLaren-Mercedes driver is choking as the championship battle reaches its climax - can he handle it?
Four days before the penultimate race in Shanghai on Sunday, the driver everyone is watching - who is seeing Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger - talked to BILD.
BILD: Many of your fellow drivers complain about your style of driving. Does all the criticism affect you?
Hamilton: None of the criticism affects me. The other drivers on the track are hardcore competitors. When you’re going for the world title, and are in the lead like I am, then your rivals will try and put as much pressure on you as possible, both on and off the track.
BILD: Has your driving become too aggressive?
Hamilton: I don’t think I’m aggressive but I do drive passionately. Normally I don’t drive into other cars. Felipe [Massa] drove into mine on Sunday. He damaged my car on the chance that he might score points and he did. But that’s already ancient history.
BILD: Are you going to change your driving style?
Hamilton: I am always working on my style. Racing in Japan, I noticed some really intense manoeuvres by some of the other drivers. That’s what makes Formula 1 what it is: we are always operating at full throttle. That’s what makes the sport so interesting for me.
