33-year-old Zyderrious Platt will spend the rest of his life in prison after being found guilty of murdering his wife, 26-year-old Jilani Platt. It took the jury a matter of an hour and a half to come to a unanimous decision. When they returned to the courtroom around 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, the jury found Platt guilty of felony murder, malice murder, feticide and aggravated assault.
Platt was found guilty of killing his pregnant wife Jilani back in 2009. Throughout the trial, Platt maintained he is not guilty of fatally shooting her. Although he admits the two had a violent argument the last time he saw her alive.
Judge Bobby Peters moved into sentencing immediately following the verdict. Platt was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences on murder and feticide charges, in addition to five years to be served consecutively for aggravated assault.
NBC 38 spoke to a therapist who explains that while most arguments between couples don't end in tragedy, money is a big issue in many marriages.
"Money causes more problems in a marriage than all of the other issues combined," said Dr. William Cole.
Dr. Cole is a Columbus therapist with over 20 years experience. He says arguments over finances often turn ugly. He says, "When disagreements happens, anger happens and sometimes it can even get to some violence."
Jilani's best friend says she witnessed an argument between the couple at Friday's Restaurant about rent payments the night she died. Also, officers testified that Platt told them the couple hadn't really spoken in over a month and he was sleeping on the couch. Dr. Cole explains, "The anger that can erupt sometimes comes from unresolved issues because the people in the relationship won't communicate. They try to bury them and then they explode. "
Platt's defense attorney Robert Watkins told the jury that the night Jilani died, the couple had a violent argument. Watkins says Platt choked his wife but when he left their home to cool off she was alive. He says when Platt came back home she was dead, so he wrapped her in a comforter and took her to a retention pond on Schatulga Road. Watkins argues that because Jilani was dead before Platt shot her, he's not guilty of murder.

Lawyers for the Amazonian communities suing Chevron have submitted the first part of their final written argument to the Ecuador court, outlining the evidence demonstrating Chevron's liability in the $113 billion environmental damages lawsuit and the fraud behind the company's primary defense of remediation.
The court filing -- called an "alegato" in Ecuador -- details in exacting detail how evidence gathered by independent experts, the plaintiffs, and from Chevron itself proves the case against the oil company. The lawsuit was first filed in U.S. federal court in 1993 but was shifted to Ecuador at Chevron's request. The plaintiffs are tens of thousands of persons who live in area of Ecuador where Chevron operated several large oil fields from 1964 to 1990, reaping excess profits by using substandard practices.
Chevron has long argued, as its primary defenses at trial, that no contamination in Ecuador is linked to its operations, that any contamination that had been present was cleaned up in a “remediation” conducted from 1995-98, and that any contamination remaining in the region was the responsibility of Petroecuador, Ecuador’s state-owned oil company which took over the oilfields after Chevron abandoned them in 1992.
Despite Chevron’s claims, a summary of the plaintiff’s alegato concludes the legal release used by Chevron as a result of that remediation is "null and void" because it was based on numerous false and misleading representations by the company. Instead of actually cleaning up the waste in the area, the limited “remediation” was largely accomplished by simply covering a small number of waste pits with dirt and then using an inappropriate laboratory test that counted only a fraction of the actual contamination to “prove” that the remediation had been effective.
"The voluminous scientific evidence in the case is summarized clearly in this historic document," said Karen Hinton, spokesperson for the plaintiffs. "This evidence proves overwhelmingly that Chevron is responsible for what is widely regarded as the world's worst oil-related disaster. We encourage all interested persons to read the alegato and judge for themselves whether Chevron is telling the truth about its deliberate misconduct in Ecuador."
The document concludes that Chevron is responsible for ongoing contamination that is harming the environment and human health to this day, even though the company fled Ecuador in the early 1990s and stripped its assets out of the country. The document concludes as follows:
♣ Chevron treated the environment "recklessly" and deliberately disposed of billions of gallons of toxic waste into rivers and streams over the 26-year period that it operated a large oil concession in Ecuador's Amazon region. "These lax operational practices have had a devastating impact on the rainforest ecosystem and its inhabitants," according to the document.
♣ Chevron dumped more than 16 billion gallons of chemical-laden "produced water" into streams and rivers over 70 years after the industry had stopped the practice in the United States due to its damaging environmental impacts.
♣ Chevron built and then abandoned more than 900 toxic waste pits filled with oil drilling byproducts such as barium, heavy metals, chloride, and acid -- all of which need extensive remediation.
♣ Chevron polluted the air by flaring gas with no controls, spilled thousands of barrels of oil, had no spill response plan, and ordered the destruction of records documenting oil spills.
The plaintiff’s "alegato" also found that "there is irrefutable evidence of contamination" at every one of Chevron's 45 well and oil production sites inspected by the parties during the trial phase of the case in the affected area, which is 1,500 square miles in size and covers a swath of rainforest roughly the size of Rhode Island. The chemicals and compounds found -- all of which are toxic and some of which are known carcinogens -- include barium, benzene, cadmium, chromium, copper, etheylbenzene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, vanadium, xylene, and zinc.Lawyers for the Amazonian communities suing Chevron have submitted the first part of... more

Microsoft is very pleased to announce another $3 million, three-year donation to Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), just two years after we helped establish the organization with a similar investment.
KIND is a pro bono organization dedicated to providing legal representation to the roughly 8,000 unaccompanied immigrant and refugee children in the U.S. who face deportation hearings. It is great to see the progress KIND has made since its launch. Up and running in seven cities throughout the U.S., KIND has helped nearly 2,000 children, ranging from 2 to 18 years old, from more than 35 countries. This has been possible through the training and support of lawyers from more than 80 law firms and corporate legal departments who have donated their time to represent these children in immigration court proceedings.
Of course, KIND’s impact cannot be measured by numbers alone. The true impact is seen through the real-life stories of vulnerable children, separated from their parents or other adults to care for them, who are given professional and thorough legal representation that truly offers them a better chance for a safe, secure and happy life. Providing legal services to these children is truly a labor of love and something that we, at Microsoft, are honored to do. And, we are grateful for the support we have seen throughout the legal profession to do the same. Our initial investment in KIND has led to additional funding from many other businesses and organizations and more than $7 million in pro bono services last year alone. We truly hope that our second donation will help galvanize even more support for this incredibly important work on behalf of children from around the world.

From a distance the teardrop-shaped peninsula looks just like any other bit of the famed Hamptons shoreline. Thick woods crowd down to the water's edge, and through the trees houses and roads can be glimpsed.
But this land is not part of the Hamptons, neither is it really part of the United States any more. This patch – in the middle of the playground to Manhattan's social elite – is proudly and fiercely Native American country.
Almost four centuries since their first contact with the white man and after a 32-year court battle that has just ended in victory, the tiny Shinnecock tribe has now been formally recognised by America's federal government.
The decision means that the Shinnecock, numbering some 1,300 members, many of whom live in deep poverty compared with their wealthy neighbours, can apply for federal funding to build schools, health centres and set up their own police force. It means their tiny 750-acre reservation is now a semi-sovereign nation within the US, just like much bigger and more famous reservations in the west.

Today in San Francisco, lawyers are presenting their closing arguments in the trial over Proposition 8, California's 2008 voter-approved ban on gay marriage. Back in January, U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker heard from both sides in a unique proceeding intended to make factual findings on the purpose and history of marriage and how allowing gays and lesbians to marry would affect society. Befitting a trial on one of the most contentious issues of our time, the affair featured high-powered lawyers, emotional testimony both for and against gay marriage, arguments over evidence and over cameras in the courtroom, and extremely high stakes: Regardless of this week's outcome, the case is likely to be appealed all the way to the Supreme Court.
The Prop. 8 trial has been unique in its execution and scope; the judge is truly looking for a factual record on marriage. Theodore Olson and David Boies — the lawyers who opposed each other before the Supreme Court in 2000 in Bush v. Gore — teamed up to argue on behalf of four homosexual plaintiffs that Prop. 8 violates the rights of gays and lesbians under what's called the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution. The defendants argued that the traditional definition of marriage should be maintained and that it's in society's best interest for children to be raised in heterosexual households.

US actress Lindsay Lohan has violated the terms of a court order after an alcohol-monitoring bracelet indicated she had been drinking.
A judge in Los Angeles has now doubled her bail to $200,000 (£138,390).
Lohan's lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley, issued a statement saying the device had detected the "presence of a small amount of alcohol" on Sunday night.
The device is punishment for missing a court hearing relating to a drink driving charge.
It is designed to test the skin for alcohol every half hour by sampling a person's perspiration. There are also sensors that check for tampering.
"Having just received the report, I am not in a position to speak to its accuracy or validity, however Ms Lohan maintains that she has been in complete compliance with all of the terms of her probation and her bail," Mr Chapman Holley said.

State Attorney Bill Cervone released a partial judgment Friday stating the University Police officers who shot a Ghanaian graduate student in his on-campus apartment will not face any illegal action.
Cervone based his judgment on the completed Florida Department of Law Enforcement internal investigation.
The judgment gives UF the ability to complete its own internal affairs investigation, which is being independently reviewed by Margolis Healy & Associates, a campus safety organization, according to a statement released Friday by university spokeswoman Janine Sikes.
Cervone has yet to announce judgment on the student, 35-year-old Kofi Adu-Brempong, who currently faces charges of one count of second-degree aggravated assault and one count of third-degree resisting arrest with violence.
In his statement, Cervone acknowledged UPD's right to enter the residence, as the officers had a legitimate reason to believe Adu-Brempong might have hurt himself inside.
"Had that action not been taken and had he or others come to harm because of inaction," he said, "...an equal or stronger issue as to the propriety of police inaction would doubtless have been raised."
Cervone added that it is not his place to review crisis procedure, just the legality of the action. He said questions of policy were best left to community discussion.
He also found no reason to charge the officers for their use of force, citing that "No one else, civilian or otherwise, was in a position to hear anything directly relevant to those events other than Adu-Brempong," adding that the student's credibility was tarnished by his apparent unstable mental health.
Under Florida law, anyone has the right to use deadly force against someone who appears threatening. Cervone reasoned the police reports were concurrent with that law.
Cervone ended his statement with a call to put the issue to rest.
"I would like to assure those who are concerned about the time required for this process to be completed," he said, "that all involved, including Adu-Brempong's defense team, have been in frequent and productive contact."
Cervone said more information will be released as his decisions are reached. In the mean time, he said, community interaction should be continued within the proper public forum.
"[A]ll involved should be cognizant of the dangers of drawing conclusions before facts are established," he saidState Attorney Bill Cervone released a partial judgment Friday stating the University... more

Martin Luther King’s family and his attorney, William F. Pepper, won a civil trial that found US government agencies guilty in the wrongful death of Martin Luther King. The 1999 trial, King Family versus Jowers and Other Unknown Co-Conspirators, is the only trial ever conducted on the assassination of Dr. King. The King family’s attempts for a criminal trial were denied, as suspect James Ray’s recant of what he claimed was a false confession was denied.
The overwhelming evidence of government complicity introduced and agreed as comprehensively valid by the jury includes the 111th Military Intelligence Group were sent to Dr. King’s location and that the usual police protection was pulled away just before the assassination. Military Intelligence set-up alleged photographers on a roof of a fire station with a clear view to Dr. King’s balcony. 20th Special Forces Group had an 8-man sniper team at the assassination location on that day. Memphis police ordered the scene where multiple witnesses reported as the source of shooting cut down of their bushes that would have hid a sniper team. Along with sanitizing a crime scene, police abandoned investigative procedure to interview witnesses who lived by the scene of the shooting.
The King Center, managed by his family, provide the outline and partial transcript to the trial here. Closing statements are here. A transcript of a talk given by Mr. Pepper explaining the trial and his book with detailed documentation, An Act of State, is here (2-page summary here). I also recommend David Ratcliffe’s review of the book, Jim Douglass’ coverage of the trial, reviewing Edward Rynearson’s resources, and watching Mr. Pepper’s talk on the subject below. I also suggest Robert Kennedy’s assassination was also a government-supported assassination to suppress war dissent.
King’s family and Mr. Pepper allege that Dr. King’s speech calling upon America to end the Vietnam War, Beyond Vietnam: A time to break silence, and his plan for a 500,000 camp-in for Washington, D.C. in the summer of 1968 were a threat to dominant and fascist political factions within US government.
Along with arranging for the assassination, CIA and military disclosure confirm that corporate media collude with political “leadership” to disinform the American public on strategic military, policy, and economic issues. This answers the question why corporate media have not covered the civil trial and verdict for MLK’s assassination. For comparison, please consider the media circus over O.J. Simpson’s trials.
“For a quarter of a century, Bill Pepper conducted an independent investigation of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. He opened his files to our family, encouraged us to speak with the witnesses, and represented our family in the civil trial against the conspirators. The jury affirmed his findings, providing our family with a long-sought sense of closure and peace, which had been denied by official disinformation and cover-ups. Now the findings of his exhaustive investigation and additional revelations from the trial are presented in the pages of this important book. We recommend it highly to everyone who seeks the truth about Dr. King’s assassination.” — Coretta Scott King, Dr. King’s wife.
Hundreds of writers have documented US corporate media collusion with US government to disinform the American public with wars and supporting policy of fascism. Corporate media’s refusal to cover this trial and report upon it is a revealing case study. From The Examiner

An appeal against the banning of a book promoted as a sequel to JD Salinger's Catcher in the Rye has been given the go-ahead.
In July, a judge in Manhattan's federal court blocked the US publication of 60 Years Later: Coming Through The Rye by Swedish novelist Fredrik Colting.
On Friday, an appeals court sent the case back to the federal court.
But in its ruling, the appeals court made it clear it expected Salinger's trust to prevail.
"Most of the matters relevant to Salinger's likelihood of success on the merits are either undisputed or readily established in his favour," the court ruled.

British taxpayers have a direct material interest in the outcome of the fraud case brought against Goldman Sachs by the US financial watchdog, the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Because the bulk of the loss on the transaction at the heart of the charge against Goldman ended up with Royal Bank of Scotland, the bank where British taxpayers have an 84% stake.
This is an interesting article, of a deliberate plan to load the UK tax payers with even more debt, as if we don't have enough thank you!
I doubt this would make front page news, but at least the BBC have said it.

A man convicted of murdering his baby daughter in a "vicious attack" has been jailed for a minimum of 16 years.
Craig Jamieson, 30, from Drumchapel in Glasgow, killed four-month-old Abbie at a flat in the city's Dumbarton Road in February 2008.
Medical experts said her injuries were caused by her being hit off a hard surface like a wall or a worktop.
Jamieson had blamed the child's mother, Nichola Haddock, from Belfast, but a jury convicted him by majority verdict.
During a 19-day trial, the High Court in Glasgow heard that Jamieson shattered Abbie's skull and left her with horrific abdominal injuries after he attacked her on 8 February 2008.
