Human Rights Petition: Sweden: Stop Deportation of Refugees Facing Execution in Iran | Change.org

Why this is Important

Twenty asylum-seeking Kurds, who are facing persecution and possible execution in Iran, have gone on hunger strike in a tent in Stockholm in protest of the Swedish Migration Board’s decision to have them deported. The men, women and children went on strike on the 20th of September - five days later the strike turned into a hunger strike. They are political activists who have worked hard for human rights and for introducing democracy in Iran. As a result of their activities and their membership in various Kurdish political parties, they were forced to flee Iran and take refuge in Sweden. Despite having been in the country for the past 1-8 years, and despite having photos and documents from the Nations High Commissioner for Refugees that confirm the obvious threat to their lives, the Migration Board has rejected their applications to stay in Sweden. In the mean time, their condition is deteriorating for every hour that passes - five men have already collapsed from hunger and been taken to the hospital, and another has sewn his lips shut. Before doing so he had stated:

“I am not treated as a human being. Most of us here have the same problem. The Migration Board does not understand our situation, they refuse to listen. We want to know why we have been refused a residence permit. Everybody here would rather die of starvation than be sent back.”

“We have begged and shouted, but the Migration Board has not listened. Now we will silence our voices, perhaps then they will listen”.

Graphic images cover the exterior of the tent, including a photo of a Kurdish teacher in Iran, Farzad Kamangar, surrounded by some twenty children. One of the refugees explains that Farzad was executed three months ago for having taught the children to read and speak Kurdish. Another picture shows Shirin Alanholi who was killed because she wanted freedom and democracy in Iran.

The Iranian regime’s new directives under Article 7 of the Iranian Penal code, namely the detention and prosecution of political refugees who return to Iran, mean that anyone who has applied for asylum on political grounds can be prosecuted. A spokesperson at the Migration Board would not comment on individual cases but said that they are aware of the hunger strike. “With regard to Iran specifically, it is about half of all applicants that are granted a residence permit. We are trying to lean towards granting residence permits”. Sweden has repeatedly made unlawful deportations. Only last year, a European Court in Strasbourg ruled that Sweden’s deportation of an Iranian was in violation of Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Women's Rights Petition: Psychology Today: Stop Publishing Racist & Sexist Articles | Change.org

On May 15, 2011, Psychology Today contributor, Satoshi Kanazawa posted an article entitled "Why Are Black Women Less Physically Attractive Than Other Women?". We demand that the Psychology Today editorial board publicly account for how and why this racist and sexist article was allowed to be published on the Psychology Today website, and take transparent steps to prevent this from happening in the future.

Kanazawa's article is nothing more than a vile regurgitation of racist and sexist beliefs about black women disguised as "objective" and "scientific" research findings, and contributes to a historical legacy of using distorted "science" as a tool to justify violent ideas about and treatment of black women. Kanazawa has a history of writing biased and error-ridden articles that attempt to justify racist beliefs. Other scientists have discredited his research and his legitimacy as a social scientist has been called into question. That Psychology Today publishes Kanazawa's often problematic articles casts serious doubt about the trustworthiness of their publications as well as the rigor of their editorial process.

Psychology Today is not just a magazine and website, but it's also a site that people access resources for mental health services for their well being. Publishing damaging and crude articles such as Kanazawa's demonstrates a profound disrespect for anyone who turns to Psychology Today for these resources.

Though Psychology Today has removed the article from their website without explanation, the editors have not acknowledged or taken responsibility for publishing the article, discussed the editorial standards they require from their contributors and whether this article satisfied those standards, or explained why Kanazawa remains as a contributor, despite being discredited by other social scientists. Psychology Today editors have a journalistic and ethical duty to be both transparent about how this article was published and accountable for this failure in public trust.

Google chairman: Internet blacklists make us more like China

Eric Schmidt, Google's chairman, has strong views on legislation setting up government Internet blacklists. "I would be very, very careful if I were a government about arbitrarily [passing] simple solutions to complex problems," Schmidt said during a Google conference in England today, according to the Guardian. "So, let's whack off the DNS. Okay, that seems like an appealing solution but it sets a very bad precedent because now another country will say, 'I don't like free speech so I'll whack off all those DNSs'—that country would be China."

Schmidt seems to have two targets in mind: the UK, where the Digital Economy Act allows for judicially ordered site blocking, and the US, where the newly introduced PROTECT IP Act hopes to monkey about with the domain name system (DNS) in order to cut off international pirate websites.

"If there is a law that requires DNSes to do 'x' and it's passed by both houses of Congress and signed by the President of the United States and we disagree with it then we would still fight it," he added, according the Guardian.

And the Financial Times, also present for Schmidt's remarks, quotes him as saying that he has no interest in removing file-sharing sites from search results. "We have been in discussion with media companies for a long time; it is not obvious how to solve it," he said.

Back in Washington, this tough line has been echoed by trade group CCIA, of which Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and other tech companies are members. "Meddling with Internet architecture to disappear sites and even hyperlinks to those sites is an Orwellian approach to law enforcement," said CEO Ed Black in a recent statement. "The solution to violations of intellectual property law is to enforce the law, not to engage in dangerous and fruitless efforts to sanitize the Internet."

"This directive may look different than Egypt or China’s Internet filtering and censorship," Black continued. "But technologically speaking shutting down parts of the Internet, even for a seemingly good reason, is still censorship—no matter what new name you give it.
