America vs. the Tea Party
For the first time in its history, America's credit rating has been downgraded.
It's not just a blow to our nation's image, it's a step that may come with real costs -- for government and individuals -- in the form of higher interest rates for borrowing.
S&P specifically cited a $4 trillion figure as what it believed would be needed for a meaningful deficit reduction package. (Source) Democrats rightfully argued that reaching $4 trillion meant that the wealthy and corporations would need to pay their fair share. But Boehner refused all reasonable offers, instead bowing to his Tea Party fanatics, and their obsession with no revenue increase whatsoever.
Because of this Tea Party fanaticism, and because of Boehner's unwillingness to stand up to it, the downgrade proceeded as threatened.
The only way to make a serious dent in the deficit is to raise revenues by making the ultra rich and corporations pay their fair share.
Thus, it is directly the responsibility of the Tea Party. Tea Party fanatics are responsible for the damage to America's reputation. And Tea Party fanatics, allegedly so concerned about the deficit, are also responsible for the higher deficits that will likely result from the increased cost of borrowing.
Speaker Boehner, it is time to stop kowtowing to these Tea Party extremists, to accept revenue increases, and to put America's interests above political interests.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.’
There are many very good reasons why we have laws in this country.
We have laws, in large part, to temper the veracity of our Constitution.
This is predominantly true in regards to the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.
Of all of the passages in the Bill of Rights; it is the First Amendment that packs what is perhaps the most resounding impact, on our lives, and on our government.
The First Amendment, which enunciates the citizens’ right to the free exercise of religion, freedom of speech, a free press, and freedom of assembly and of petition, is veritably unique among all of the ten amendments comprising the Bill of Rights, in that it expounds its component freedoms as absolute human civil rights. It articulates few or no limiting qualifications; except to elaborate that the assemblies in question must be of a “peaceful” nature.
The fact that a plain-text reading of the First Amendment proclaims its comprising liberties as absolute freedoms makes it all that much more important that laws, at all levels of government passed since the ratification of the Bill of Rights in 1789, have tempered the awesome impact of the passages therein.
A primary, resounding and unsettling current example of the temperance of these liberties concerns groups, cults, and organizations; throughout the country, and the ideological spectrum, founded on the principles of prejudice, discrimination, and, all-too-often, active violence towards and against those of other ideological, racial, ethnic, or religious demographics.
These groups include predominantly, but not exclusively, those of the Ku Klux Klan, and other such White-Pride groups and, conversely, Dark-Power organizations such as the Black Panthers; as well as domestic splinter cells of religious fundamentalist extremist organizations such as Al-Qaeda.
However, in more recent times, and predominantly since the turn of the millennium, this ever-growing and expanding list of groups has begun, to an increasing extent, to include more home-grown; as it were; domestic extremist organizations; and many which have assimilated themselves into our national cultural identity; infiltrating into all; even the highest, levels of our government; and ingratiating themselves into the hearts and, increasingly narrow, minds of millions of voting constituents.
These, increasingly institutionalized, organizations; with names such as “The Foundation for a Better Life”, and “Focus on the Family”; present a frequently all-too-convincing façade of innocent, pious devotion to seemingly harmless Judeo-Christian ideologies.
This charade is in stark contrast to the underhanded actual activities of such organizations; which are, in fact, radical Evangelical Christian fundamentalist extremist fronts; espousing; at the very top of their voices, and through very nearly every available medium imaginable; a reactionary Catholic religious ideology; which is, at its very core concepts; just as much founded in a base of bigotry, extreme prejudice, and active discrimination; as any ever expounded by even the most fervent figureheads of the KKK or Al-Qaeda.
The ideological absolute and theological imperatives of these organizations include a prohibition on the study and research of stem cells from human embryos; for use in medical treatments which would ultimately save millions of lives; based solely on the belief that the clusters of cells in question, frozen for months or even years in liquid nitrogen, are, in fact, a living, breathing, thinking, and feeling human beings.
This in spite of the fact that, in reality; the zygotes in question meet very nearly exactly none of the scientific qualifications which identify and define, biologically, a living being: in that it does not have an organized, centralized nervous system, digestive system, respiratory or circulatory system; and that it does not eat, breathe, sleep, think, or communicate.
This over-ambitious prohibition, however; is significantly less about the preservation of an alleged sanctity of human life.
But rather would be a component of a far broader siege on the most fundamental of the foundations of all human knowledge and understanding; Science.
As Evangelical Catholic fundamentalist ideologues; the figureheads of these radical extremist organizations view Science’s relentless and eternal quest for evidence and for proof; to answer the multitude of questions posed by the mysterious elements of the natural universe; as an assault upon the ideology of faith; which is, to them, preferably blinded; but is the operative concept within any religious ideology.
As was the case with the Inquisition in the 14 and 1500’s; and with the Crusades of previous centuries before; whenever and wherever there is any threat of an insurrection to the omnipresence of Christian religious ideological doctrine; or Dogma; whether it be real or material, or merely perceived; the Church’s response is that of a voracious, if frequently preemptive, counter-assault.
However; returning to the original point; such an assault on practical rationality should not be permitted in a civilized culture.
But if any nation, such as the United States, were to exist by merely abiding by a document such as the First Amendment; which expounds absolute rights such as the freedoms which it does; the citizenry could, quite simply and easily; conduct themselves in any variety of such activities.
Citizens could participate in any number of actions, which they could justify or rationalize as an expression of their particular respective religion; quite a list; which spans the spectrum of the gambit: from animalistic fertility rites of passage, to literal human sacrifice.
Such activities could not reasonably be expected to be tolerated; much less permitted, in a civilized culture such as ours.
This, in conclusion; to bring the line of thought to the fruition of a full circle; is why; in regards, at least, to the First Amendment; why our nation’s multiple levels of government have continued to pass laws, which temper the veracity of the Amendments in the Bill of Rights, in the 220 years since its ratification.

On May 15, 2011, Psychology Today contributor, Satoshi Kanazawa posted an article entitled "Why Are Black Women Less Physically Attractive Than Other Women?". We demand that the Psychology Today editorial board publicly account for how and why this racist and sexist article was allowed to be published on the Psychology Today website, and take transparent steps to prevent this from happening in the future.
Kanazawa's article is nothing more than a vile regurgitation of racist and sexist beliefs about black women disguised as "objective" and "scientific" research findings, and contributes to a historical legacy of using distorted "science" as a tool to justify violent ideas about and treatment of black women. Kanazawa has a history of writing biased and error-ridden articles that attempt to justify racist beliefs. Other scientists have discredited his research and his legitimacy as a social scientist has been called into question. That Psychology Today publishes Kanazawa's often problematic articles casts serious doubt about the trustworthiness of their publications as well as the rigor of their editorial process.
Psychology Today is not just a magazine and website, but it's also a site that people access resources for mental health services for their well being. Publishing damaging and crude articles such as Kanazawa's demonstrates a profound disrespect for anyone who turns to Psychology Today for these resources.
Though Psychology Today has removed the article from their website without explanation, the editors have not acknowledged or taken responsibility for publishing the article, discussed the editorial standards they require from their contributors and whether this article satisfied those standards, or explained why Kanazawa remains as a contributor, despite being discredited by other social scientists. Psychology Today editors have a journalistic and ethical duty to be both transparent about how this article was published and accountable for this failure in public trust.

In days, we could finally see the beginning of the end of the ‘war on drugs’. This expensive war has completely failed to curb the plague of drug addiction, while costing countless lives, devastating communities, and funneling trillions of dollars into violent organized crime networks.
Experts all agree that the most sensible policy is to regulate, but politicians are afraid to touch the issue. In days, a global commission including former heads of state and foreign policy chiefs of the UN, EU, US, Brazil, Mexico and more will break the taboo and publicly call for new approaches including decriminalization and regulation of drugs.
This could be a once-in-a-generation tipping-point moment -- if enough of us call for an end to this madness. Politicians say they understand that the war on drugs has failed, but claim the public isn't ready for an alternative. Let's show them we not only accept a sane and humane policy -- we demand it. Sign the petition and share with everyone --if we reach 1 million voices, it will be personally delivered to world leaders by the global commission.

Eric Schmidt, Google's chairman, has strong views on legislation setting up government Internet blacklists. "I would be very, very careful if I were a government about arbitrarily [passing] simple solutions to complex problems," Schmidt said during a Google conference in England today, according to the Guardian. "So, let's whack off the DNS. Okay, that seems like an appealing solution but it sets a very bad precedent because now another country will say, 'I don't like free speech so I'll whack off all those DNSs'—that country would be China."
Schmidt seems to have two targets in mind: the UK, where the Digital Economy Act allows for judicially ordered site blocking, and the US, where the newly introduced PROTECT IP Act hopes to monkey about with the domain name system (DNS) in order to cut off international pirate websites.
"If there is a law that requires DNSes to do 'x' and it's passed by both houses of Congress and signed by the President of the United States and we disagree with it then we would still fight it," he added, according the Guardian.
And the Financial Times, also present for Schmidt's remarks, quotes him as saying that he has no interest in removing file-sharing sites from search results. "We have been in discussion with media companies for a long time; it is not obvious how to solve it," he said.
Back in Washington, this tough line has been echoed by trade group CCIA, of which Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and other tech companies are members. "Meddling with Internet architecture to disappear sites and even hyperlinks to those sites is an Orwellian approach to law enforcement," said CEO Ed Black in a recent statement. "The solution to violations of intellectual property law is to enforce the law, not to engage in dangerous and fruitless efforts to sanitize the Internet."
"This directive may look different than Egypt or China’s Internet filtering and censorship," Black continued. "But technologically speaking shutting down parts of the Internet, even for a seemingly good reason, is still censorship—no matter what new name you give it. This bill would send a signal to Internet restricting countries that they can make similar demands and use similar tools—only for more sinister reasons."(more at link ) and at my site is a petition from demand progress if you'd like to get involved and help stop Protect IP act NOW! -figg

Shhh... We're not allowed to talk about it. The new Internet Blacklist Bill shows so little regard for free speech and Internet freedom that it would actually ban people from having serious conversations about the new Internet Blacklist Bill.
It would block "information location tools" from pointing to sites "suspected" of piracy. So that means that we couldn't send you a post , article, or email just like this one with links to the websites that were being prosecuted.

Stop the" Protect IP" Bill being slammed through Congress by Big Bis.
We knew it was coming: Members of Congress and their business allies were gearing up to pass a revised Internet Blacklist Bill -- which more than 325,000 Demand Progress members helped block last winter -- but we never expected it to be this atrocious. Last year's bill has been renamed the "PROTECT IP" Act and it is far worse than its predecessor.
Senators Leahy and Hatch pretended to weigh free speech concerns as they revised the bill. Instead, the new legislation would institute a China-like censorship regime in the United States, whereby the Department of Justice could force search engines, browsers, and service providers to block users' access to websites, and scrub the American Internet clean of any trace of their existence.
Will you urge Congress to oppose the PROTECT IP Act? Just click on link below-- it'll only take a second.
Furthermore, it wouldn't just be the Attorney General who could add sites to the blacklist, but the new bill would allow any copyright holder to get sites blacklisted -- sure to result in an explosion of dubious and confused orders.

Republicans are waging an all-out war on women. The latest assault—a bill that would subject certain rape and incest survivors to IRS investigations—is simply inhumane. Sign the petition from EMILY's List and MoveOn.org today to tell the Senate: Stop the War on Women! Please lets stop trying to turn back the clock on Women's Rights
Sign the Petition! I did and share everywhere and expose their REAL agenda to take our human rights and dignity well, I'm not gonna be a part of this shame here's the letter in full i received please lets show them we are not divided we are not going back
The House just passed a bill that could force rape and incest survivors to prove to the IRS that they were assaulted.1
And now they are even threatening hold our entire economy hostage over it by attaching the contents of the bill to essential legislation that raises the debt ceiling. If the debt ceiling bill does not pass then it would devastate our economy—and Republicans want to use this threat to force Senate Democrats into voting for a bill with these anti-choice provisions included.2
It's absolutely outrageous. That's why we are teaming up with our friends at EMILY's List to pressure the Senate to reject this and other terrible attacks on the rights and well-being of women.
Can you sign our joint petition right now? Tell the Senate to stand up against this terrible bill—and speak out against the Republican war on women.
Click here to sign the "Stop the War on Women" petition.
H.R. 3 would impose tax penalties on small businesses and individuals who buy abortion coverage with their own money—with exceptions only for cases of rape, incest, or when a woman's life is in danger.3
The result? Survivors of rape and incest who seek abortion care could be forced to detail their assaults and provide proof to IRS investigators.4
Reliving a horrific sexual assault to the police and in court is awful enough. Forcing women to prove to IRS investigators that they were assaulted is simply inhumane.
Unfortunately, H.R. 3 is just one horrendous part of a full-scale war on women. House Republicans have been churning out one vile bill after another that impinges on women's rights, health, and the constitutionally protected right to choice. It's clear their top priorities are not jobs and the economy.
Republicans clearly have no boundaries when it comes to attacking women's rights. But just as when they attempted to redefine rape, we can stop them from passing this anti-choice bill and subjecting rape survivors to inhumane interrogations—if we all speak out.
Can you sign the petition today? Just click below—and share this email with your friends, family, and social networks today.
Thanks for all you do.

In 1980, I was walking to the Pearl River train station to catch a train when I came across what I recognized as a crime scene on Main Street, just off East Central. The district attorney at that time was standing there, staring; I asked the obvious question.
Trembling, he said told me that it was the murder scene of a very young girl.
It was 31 years ago and I still cannot let go. It returns every time I see my daughter, Jennifer, now 47 years old, and the happily married mother of three. She was a classmate of the victim, Paula Bohovesky. I fixate on what joys Paula and Paula's parents were robbed of, joys replaced with utter life-suffocating anguish.
Paula was beautiful and artistic. The Pearl River High School student possessed a palpable aura of softness, kindness and love.
This is her story:
On Oct. 28, 1980, 28-year-old Richard LaBarbera of Orangeburg and 20-year-old Robert McCain, a drifter from the South, attacked, sexually assaulted, and brutally murdered the 16-year-old. It was 7 p.m. and Paula was walking home from her after-school job at the Pearl River Library. McCain slammed a piece of broken pavement into her head, viciously beat her and broke her larynx so she could not cry out. He then tried to rape her as LaBarbera watched. It was a classic attack; he knew exactly what he was doing. As Paula lay there, LaBarbera, feeling no pity for the helpless and dying girl, sodomized and then stabbed her in the back five times. Paula suffered and died alone. Dr. Frederick Zugibe, the medical examiner at the time, said that it was the most brutal attack he had seen.
Both men were tried and convicted for the murder and received the maximum sentence of 25 years to life. They served those 25 years and are now eligible for parole. They were denied parole in 2005, 2007 and 2009, and are now up for parole again.
They will be eligible for parole every two years from now on, so a number of people of three generations, including Paula's mother, Lois, who still lives just one block from that scene of horror, have formed a dual-purpose organization.

The crisis in Japan is heartwrenching. The latest reports suggest at least 10,000 dead from one of the most powerful earthquakes in recorded history followed by a devastating tsunami. And that number is likely to rise.

A case challenging the constitutionality of the health care reform bill passed by Congress is headed to the Supreme Court, and Justice Clarence Thomas has a supreme ethical conflict.
It's been widely reported that the Thomas family has financial ties to the conservative organizations leading the campaign to bring down our new health care law — the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
Rep. Anthony Weiner and 73 other members of Congress have signed a letter detailing the appearance of ethical conflict and asking Justice Thomas to recuse himself from deliberations on the constitutionality of health care reform.
We're asking you to sign a companion letter that Rep. Weiner — a champion of progressive issues — will deliver to the Supreme Court along with the letter signed by members of Congress. (petition and letter too.. at my link you can sign automatically)
Thomas failed to disclose that his wife Ginni Thomas received a total of $686,589 in compensation from the Heritage Foundation. Furthermore his wife is currently advertising herself as a lobbyist who has "experience and connections" to conservative groups who have an explicit agenda to overturn health care reform — by repeal in the Congress or overturning the law in the courts.
Justice Thomas is no stranger to questions of ethics. Along with Justice Antonin Scalia he attended meetings organized by the secretive, Tea Party-funding billionaire Koch brothers. The Koch brothers have been key players in rewriting the political landscape after the Citizens United Supreme Court decision unleashed the floodgates of corporate money in federal politics, and Thomas's wife has received an undisclosed salary paid for by undisclosed donors as CEO of Liberty Central, a 501(c)(4) organization that was formed to take advantage of Citizens United rules and to play an active role in the 2010 elections.
Unlike other members of the federal judiciary, Supreme Court Justices have no specific code of ethics to which they may be held accountable. But there is a clear appearance of a conflict of interest between his wife's clear financial stake in overturning the health care law and Justice Thomas' personal duty to exhibit the highest degree of discretion and impartiality. To protect the honor of the highest court in the land, Thomas must recuse himself from deliberations on the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.A case challenging the constitutionality of the health care reform bill passed by... more
Over a million people have signed this petition calling on governments to ban pesticides that kill bees:
We call on you to immediately ban the use of neonicotinoid pesticides until and unless new independent scientific studies prove they are safe. The catastrophic demise of bee colonies could put our whole food chain in danger. If you act urgently with precaution now, we could save bees from extinction.
If you are curious as to just why this is so important, here’s Tom Theobald, the whistleblowing beekeeper who “leaked” an EPA memo about the systemic pesticide Clothianidin. EPA scientists do not approve of the use of this toxic poison because of the damage caused to honeybees and other insects and invertebrates. Yet the EPA proposes the sale will simply continue. Here he discusses the EPA and the bigger picture problems that allowed this toxic chemical to be released onto the market – despite concerns of the EPA scientists.
