The Earliest Beer Recipe
Beer brewing dates to almost 6000 BC. However, it was the Sumerians around 2000 BC who really loved the stuff. Their plaques and carvings often center on people or gods drinking from large jars of beer. A hymn to one of their most important goddesses, Ninkasi, is actually a very detailed explanation of how to make beer; this was helpful in a society that was almost entirely illiterate. Want to make some beer but can’t read the recipe? Just start reciting the hymn and you’re set. Beer was so important that the average Sumerian couldn’t be bothered to stop drinking it for anything apparently, as there is a carving of a woman drinking out of a beer jug in the middle of sexual intercourse. That’s some dedication to your booze. The Earliest Beer Recipe

As if musicians needed another reason to drink, now they can write their beer purchases off as a business expense. Tuned Pale Ale, the brainspawn of Philadelphia design engineers Matt Braun and Christopher Mufalli, may only appear to be a six-pack of beer, but upon closer investigation one notices lines on the label indicating pitches in the key of C (white piano keys).
The general idea is to drink the beer to the level of the pitch you’re seeking, and since both music and beer is generally more fun in groups, you can have your friends drink to different pitches so you can generate some harmony.

The trouble with most bar crawls is that the bars usually suck, the beer sucks and someone has to drive. But I have conceived a little tour you can do that doesn't suck, includes only those pubs that serve unique local craft beers and you can cover much of the circuit on foot and by boat, even if you don't have a boat. The trouble with most bar crawls is that the bars usually suck, the beer sucks and... more

Over at True/Slant, Neal Ungerleider has a write-up of the annual Oktoberfest in a small West Bank town called Taybeh. Oktoberfest in the Palestinian Territories? Well, it's largely to support homegrown company Taybeh Brewery. He went to visit, and added a slew of photos to his Flickr stream. We've got a great piece on the Taybeh Brewery. Enjoy!

Brewer Juergen Hopf has launched a libido-boosting beer that promises to be better than Viagro.
The brewer says the secret to the beer is that he whipped up the recipe in the nude wearing just a leather apron and an alpine hat after he was called out to fix a broken machine late one night.
He said: "I was called up to try and fix it as I live just over the road. It was the middle of the night and there wasn't a soul in sight so I crossed the road wearing just my little apron and slippers. The machinery couldn't be restarted so I picked up a large stick and started to stir the vat. I suddenly felt strange and I knew that this beer would be different from any beer we had ever made before. Sure enough, when the beer went on sale everyone who drank it said the effect was instant. Everyone I asked told me they had not watched TV all week. Instead they went straight to the bedroom with no time to spare."
Plans are already in the works to market the beer with a topless woman on the label.Brewer Juergen Hopf has launched a libido-boosting beer that promises to be better... more

In our latest video, we catch up with Chad Kennedy, Head Brewer at Portland's Laurelwood Public House and Brewery. Portland is of course known for its beer and microbreweries, and the Portland beer scene has been swept up in the organic movement in recent years (which is why the North American Organic Brewers Festival was held in Portland over the weekend).
Laurelwood wasn't the first certified-organic brewery in Oregon, but it has been the longest lasting. Chad and his brewers have two organic brews, the the Free Range Red and Tree Hugger Porter, and if Dorothee and Chad seem a bit happier than usual, it's because we had the pleasure of tasting during the shoot.
Chad walked us through the whole process of brewing organic beer, and to our surprise he told us that hops aren't actually organic in organic beer. The barley -- another key ingredient -- is all-organic, but the hops are not. The USDA only requires that 95 percent of the ingredients in certified-organic beer are themselves organic, and because organic hops are in very short supply right now, conventional hops are often used in certified-organic beer.
