Carmanah Technologies is working with the City of Kelowna, British Columbia, to equip the community's parks, paths and other public spaces with solar-powered LED lighting technology. As part of its "Going Green" strategy, Kelowna will install 100 Carmanah EverGEN solar-powered area lights in a citywide deployment of renewable technology.
A Government of Canada grant of $500,000 will help support the outdoor lighting project as part of the government's commitment to help Canadians reduce energy costs, increase energy efficiency, and develop cleaner energy technologies. The government will contribute $480,000 in funding from the Technology Early Actions Measures program and $20,000 of in-kind support from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan).
The solar-powered lights will illuminate green spaces and other public areas to help enhance convenience, security, and visual appeal throughout the city. With no trenching, cabling or permits required, each area light can be installed in minutes at a fraction of the cost of a wired light source, to provide years of trouble-free operation without the scheduled maintenance or monthly utility bills of traditional electric lights.

Navigant Consulting has announced plans to launch a major multi-client study on the convergence of the Smart Grid with Photovoltaics (PV). This comprehensive and focused study will help participating organizations identify the key technology components of a PV Smart Grid; understand how the Smart Grid could create additional value for distributed PV; gain insight to the implications for utilities; and identify trends and valuable market opportunities.
Navigant Consulting is accepting participants for the study.
"It's an exciting time for PV and we see tremendous opportunity with regards to the emerging Smart Grid," stated Lisa Frantzis, Managing Director, and leader of the Renewable Energy Team within Navigant Consulting's Energy Practice.
"We're seeing companies positioning themselves now for leadership in this rapidly converging PV Smart Grid future. This study will describe the likely evolution of PV and PV-enabling Smart Grid technologies, and the potential for new business models that will arise out of the convergence of the two."

Three words you never thought you'd hear President Bush say, and yet he said them in urging a reduction of the nation's dependence on foreign suppliers. His remarks came after OPEC announced it would not increase oil output.
Another shocker - he made the statements at a renewable energy conference. I didn't expect Bush to even acknowledge such events take place (given that last I heard he considered global warming an unproven theory), let alone to speak at one!Three words you never thought you'd hear President Bush say, and yet he said them... more

Renewable Energy From the Deep Ocean.
A process called Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) uses the heat energy stored in the Earth's oceans to generate electricity. OTEC works best when the temperature difference between the warmer, top layer of the ocean and the colder, deep ocean water is about 20°C (36°F). These conditions exist in tropical coastal areas, roughly between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer.
This difference in temperature exists between shallow and deep waters of the oceans. The Sun continuously warms the oceans' surfaces, covering approximately 70% of the Earth's surface. In this process considerable temperature difference is creating itself, between surface and deep waters. To bring the cold water to the surface, OTEC plants require an expensive, large diameter intake pipe, which is submerged a mile or more into the ocean's depths.
Some energy experts believe that if it could become cost-competitive with conventional power technologies, OTEC could produce billions of watts of electrical power. This process does not pollute environment nor exhaust dangerous greenhouse gases. Warm surface waters and cold deep waters are the result of ocean streams which are heating the water in parts of the ocean near the equator, and cooling water in areas near North Pole and this cold water streams on ocean's bottom towards equator.

It will collect more sun energy? Put mirrors to the Solar tower's wall ! More potential? More capacity? This is the PS10 solar power tower. Seville, Spain.
It will collect more sun energy, because the solar tower/sun tower's wall mirror (1) reflect sun energy to the other sun panels, which are in the ground (2) / floor, than they collect from the sun direct too? And efficient / stronger sun energy goes to the top? (3)

Europe is considering plans to spend more than £5bn on a string of giant solar power stations along the Mediterranean desert shores of northern Africa and the Middle East.
More than a hundred of the generators, each fitted with thousands of huge mirrors, would generate electricity to be transmitted by undersea cable to Europe and then distributed across the continent to European Union member nations, including Britain.
Billions of watts of power could be generated this way, enough to provide Europe with a sixth of its electricity needs and to allow it to make significant cuts in its carbon emissions. At the same time, the stations would be used as desalination plants to provide desert countries with desperately needed supplies of fresh water.

Every home in Britain could run on wind power by 2020 if the new expansion plan takes effect. Currently, just 2% of Britain's energy comes from renewables, but that number could increase by 30-fold if the 7,000 off-shore wind turbines are put into place. There are some concerns about changing the aesthetic of Britain's shores. But I say I'd prefer wind turbines to the alternative of being slowly baked and poisoned by CO2 emissions. And I think wind turbines look kinda cool. Much cooler than big power plants spewing pollution into the air. Every home in Britain could run on wind power by 2020 if the new expansion plan takes... more
