Designer Jocko Chan has developed a unique idea for an environmentally friendly sound system. A stalk of bamboo is placed in a funnel which sits on an eco ceramic base. Pour water into the funnel to nourish the bamboo and as it grows so does your sound system, allowing the audio to be piped up into the room through the stalk.Designer Jocko Chan has developed a unique idea for an environmentally friendly sound... more

PetroAlgae is the first renewable energy company to commercialize a drop-in replacement for fossil fuels. The company licenses an innovative commercial micro-crop technology that enables the large-scale production of green fuels as well as a high-value protein co-product. The company's fuels are functionally identical to petroleum-based fuels and therefore use the existing industry infrastructure.
PetroAlgae’s proprietary technology is 1) clean, 2) economically viable, 3) scalable, 4) resource efficient, and 5) ready for commercialization today. Our micro-crops consume more than twice their weight in CO² and produce yields up to 25x to 100x more productive than macro-crop (soy, corn, soy, jatropha, etc.) biofuel feedstocks.PetroAlgae is the first renewable energy company to commercialize a drop-in... more

They look like giant fly-swatters but could this be how technology will save our asses from extinction?
Scientists reckon 100,000 artificial trees could be deployed to within about 10 - 20 years to soak up carbon emissions.
These pictures actually do look pretty cool and algae strips on buildings might be what it takes - geo-engineering they call it.

"NASA and the Air Force said today they had successfully launched a 9-ft. rocket 1,300 feet into the sky, powered by aluminum powder and water ice. This combination of fuel elements, referred to as ALICE, has the potential to replace some liquid or solid propellants. The technology is being developed at Purdue University and Pennsylvania State University. Aside from its environmental benefiits, ALICE has the advantage that it could be manufactured in far-away places, such as the moon or Mars, instead of being transported to distant horizons at great cost, researchers said.""NASA and the Air Force said today they had successfully launched a 9-ft. rocket... more

BLYTHE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 28, 2008--Ironwood State Prison (Ironwood) and SunEdison today announced the activation of a new 1.18 megawatt (MW) ground-mounted photovoltaic solar power system.
The photovoltaic system, which will deliver 2.4 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of clean renewable energy in the first year of operation, was deployed through an innovative public-private partnership between the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and SunEdison, North America’s largest solar energy services provider.
Under a solar power services agreement (SPSA), SunEdison financed, constructed and will operate the solar energy system. The CDCR avoids all upfront capital costs and will purchase the solar energy at predictable prices equal to or less than current retail rates. The solar system will produce no greenhouse gases, no noise and will use little to no water in operation....

PHILADELPHIA (AP)
A Philadelphia prison hopes to save money—and the environment—by using solar panels to provide hot water at the facility.
City officials say the project will save about $1.1 million and 1 million pounds of carbon emissions over the anticipated 25-year life of the system.
The new solar-powered system at the Riverside Correctional Facility replaces traditional oil- and gas-fired water heaters.

A little prairie grouse could give the wind energy industry big fits.
Should the lesser prairie chicken become listed as threatened or endangered — and it’s close now — there would be significant restrictions on companies hoping to plant towering turbines across a five-state region believed to have some of the nation’s best wind energy potential.A little prairie grouse could give the wind energy industry big fits.

People want to use clean and green energy and live easy on earth’s resources. Many are changing to hybrid cars and using solar panels side by side with conventional sources of energy. But they hold a grudge. How to store large amount of energy in batteries? Hybrid cars fit batteries for power storage. But this power is not enough to last long distances and takes many undesirable hours to recharge. The storage battery is not very helpful during acceleration. Solar and wind also don’t provide us with power at constant rate.People want to use clean and green energy and live easy on earth’s resources.... more

Robert Green, an American Inventor, has developed a brand new technology which generates kinetic energy through the conversion of waste heat (as well as many other fuel sources). The Green Steam Engine is piston powered and designed for a wide assortment of practical applications. These steam engines are easy to build and can be used to power boats, electricity generators, air or water pumps, water distillers, heat pumps, air conditioners and a wide array of other small to medium sized appliances.Robert Green, an American Inventor, has developed a brand new technology which... more

Xeros is working on a new breed of washing machines that will use only a cup of water per load, relying on reusable nylon beads to trap dirt and stains for hundreds of washes.
The U.K.-based Xeros has been testing the machine for three years. Through a partnership with GreenEarth Cleaning, the machines will soon be sold in North America. The initial target will be commercial dry cleaners and laundromats.
The Xeros machine uses 90 percent less water than a conventional washing machine, and it also use less detergent and energy for a load of laundry. Due to less water being used, there’s also less of a need for putting clothes in a dryer, which also saves energy.
For those wondering about a difference in quality or effect on clothing, GreenEarth claims the impact is negligible.
“The testing completed to date has indicated no appreciable difference in wear between garments processed in the Xeros technology versus the traditional laundry process,” says Tim Maxwell, president of GreenEarth Cleaning. “Extensive testing with silks, embroidered garments, and other delicate items have shown no ill effects.”
Xeros claims that the nylon beads are recyclable once they are saturated, but the company has not announced any plans to offer recycling. Typically in the U.S., nylon can be recycled as a scrap plastic but is not part of curbside recycling programs.Xeros is working on a new breed of washing machines that will use only a cup of water... more

UPHAM, N.M. -- Against the slate-blue backdrop of the San Andres Mountains, officials on Friday symbolically marked the start of construction on Spaceport America and launched a new era of adventure for mankind: commercial space travel.
Spaceport officials have said they expect the $200 million project to wrap up in 18 to 24 months, and an official with the space flight company Virgin Galactic said it could send the first tourists into space in two years, depending on how quickly technology develops.
Gov. Bill Richardson said the spaceport is possible because of investments on the part of the state and Virgin Galactic, which is putting about $250 million into creating the spacecraft that will be used.

When the big auto makers stumble it means there is room in the market place for the new and innovative car makers.
At least that's what the New V-Vehicle Company (VVC) is hoping as it announced plans to build a new range of fuel efficient car in Monroe, Louisiana.
VVC, which is partially backed by oil man turned environmentalist T. Boone Pickens, announced that it would create new 1400 jobs to build the mystery cars.
“We’re trying to be protective of the things we need to be (because of potential competition),” said Varazano, the project’s visionary and former executive vice president of Oracle Corp. “We want to tell you about the car and distribution system all at once. When the big auto makers stumble it means there is room in the market place for the... more

The Environmental Protection Agency yesterday declared its first-ever "public health emergency," saying the federal government will funnel $6 million to provide medical care for people sickened by asbestos from a mine in northwest Montana.
The declaration applies to the towns of Libby and Troy, where for decades workers dug for vermiculite, a mineral used in insulation. They were unknowingly poisoning themselves: The vermiculite was contaminated with a toxic form of asbestos, which workers carried home on their clothes.
The Department of Health and Human Services estimates that there are 500 people with asbestos-related illnesses such as lung cancer and asbestosis in the two towns, whose populations total about 3,900.
A spokeswoman for the department said 50 new cases are diagnosed every year, including some in workers' relatives and children who never set foot in a mine.
