I looked up the States of Iowa, and New Hampshire. I wanted to see if they were located in America. Yep, they became States: 1788, New Hampshire, 1846, Iowa. Both, north of the Mason Dixon line, how does that song go, look away, look away _____ land.

After finishing fourth in Iowa and New Hampshire, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich predicted Sunday that he would take first place in the upcoming South Carolina primary.
“I’m probably gonna win next Saturday, because as a Georgia Reagan conservative I fit much more comfortably,” the former House Speaker told CBS host Bob Schieffer.
“Do you think [former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney] would be the weakest candidate that Republicans could field this time out?” the CBS host asked.
“I think it’s pretty challenging for a candidate, once you get to the real record, for that candidate to arouse the enthusiasm of a certain segment of the conservative movement,” Gingrich replied.
“We’re all going to do everything we can to defeat Barack Obama. The re-election of Barack Obama in this environment with this record, would lead him to be so arrogant and so aggressive that it’s hard to imagine what his second term would be like. … I just think a clear Reagan conservative has a much better chance of defeating him that somebody who’s comes out of a Massachusetts moderate background.”
A Reuters/Ipsos poll of South Carolina voters released Saturday found that Romney had a 21 point lead over Texas Congressman Ron Paul and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who were tied at 16 percent. Gingrich was in fourth place with support from only 12 percent of South Carlina Republican voters.
The South Carolina primary will be held Jan. 21.

Anyone who denies there are big flaws in our military's procurement practices is light on scruples and probably the CEO of, say, Boeing (among others)... or maybe both.
Anyone who believes that if America had no military the world would live in peace and harmony is suffering from dementia. Like it or not, America needs a military that can defend and support our interests. The problem is how we buy it.Anyone who denies there are big flaws in our military's procurement practices is... more

The Union Leader newspaper, an influential voice in state politics, today ran a scathing front-page editorial reminding Obama that voters rejected him in the state's 2008 primary in favor of Hillary Clinton.
http://unionleader.com/article/20111122/OPINION01/711229985
Obama is getting a chilling welcome on his first visit to New Hampshire today, the first one in two years. The Union Leader's editorial is a signal to Obama that they are not happy with him at all.
In the last paragraph of the article it states; "Here is hoping that seven weeks from today, primary voters here will put the nation on a path to unseating this glib, clueless disaster of a President."The Union Leader newspaper, an influential voice in state politics, today ran a... more

A panel of three federal judges ordered Texas not to move forward with redistricting plans for both congressional and state legislative seats until they are approved in court.
Justice Department lawyers have declared in court that they believe the congressional and statehouse redistricting plans signed into law by Gov. Rick Perry have been adopted at least in part for the purpose of "diminishing the ability of citizens of the United States, on account of race, color, or membership in a language minority group, to elect their preferred candidates."
They've argued that regardless of intent, the plans would have the effect of diminishing the ability of Hispanic voters to pick their preferred candidates.
A panel of three federal judges in San Antonio ruled that Texas should wait until the courts rule on the legality of the maps. In San Antonio, the panel of judges has heard testimony about the maps but hasn't ruled on their legality, while the D.C. panel -- charged with deciding whether to preclear the maps -- won't hold hearings for a month, according to the Texas Tribune. The court in San Antonio is handling a separate suit filed by opponents of the plan, while court in D.C. is handling the suit involving the Justice Department.
"According to the Texas Election Code, any changes that must be made in the county election precinct boundaries 'to give effect to a redistricting plan' must be finalized by October 1, 2011," the judges wrote, according to the Texas Tribune. "Because the redistricting plans have not been precleared ... all persons or entities that would otherwise have a duty under Section 42.032 of the Texas Election Code are relieved of those duties until further order of the Court."

Nearly 3 in 4 say the country is on the wrong track, and nearly half favor slashing government spending — a potentially dismal finding for President Obama, who will unveil a jobs plan this week.
California voters are increasingly downcast about the direction of the country, but — like their leaders in Washington — many would rather adhere to party orthodoxy than compromise to address the current economic problems, a new USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times poll shows.
The findings offer little guidance for President Obama, who will unveil a jobs package this week that he hopes to push through a polarized Congress. Further troubling for the president: The survey results suggest that Republicans, even in deep-blue California, are winning the rhetorical war of words over how to frame the country's economic troubles, and how to get out of them.
Although Obama has previously called for strategic government investments to stimulate the economy, only 37% of California voters said they favor such an approach. Instead, the Republican view — that slashing government spending to restrain the deficit will better lead to prosperity — was preferred by 49% of respondents, according to the survey sponsored by the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and The Times.
"The argument of 'We need to cut the size of government, we need to reduce the deficit' has won, even in California," said David Kanevsky, research director for American Viewpoint, a Republican firm that co-directed the bipartisan poll. "Stimulus is almost a four-letter word here."
With California unemployment mired at 12%, the electorate is clearly dissatisfied with the status quo. Nearly 3 in 4 voters say the country is on the wrong track, up sharply from the 55% who felt that way in November 2009......[Article continues at URL, above]September 05, 2011

"... in smaller, more probing focus groups, voters show they are fairly cynical about Democratic politicians’ stands. They tune out the politicians’ fine speeches and plans and express sentiments like these: “It’s just words.” “There’s just such a control of government by the wealthy that whatever happens, it’s not working for all the people; it’s working for a few of the people.” “We don’t have a representative government anymore.”
This distrust of government and politicians is unfolding as a full-blown crisis of legitimacy sidelines Democrats and liberalism. Just a quarter of the country is optimistic about our system of government — the lowest since polls by ABC and others began asking this question in 1974. But a crisis of government legitimacy is a crisis of liberalism. It doesn’t hurt Republicans. If government is seen as useless, what is the point of electing Democrats who aim to use government to advance some public end?"

"PPP's newest national poll finds that after a little more than 3 months in charge House Republicans have fallen so far out of favor with the American public that it's entirely possible Democrats could take control of the House back next year."
http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/pdf/PPP_Release_US_0412513.pdf
"Just a few months after giving them a majority in the U.S. House,
American voters are having second thoughts about the Republican congressional
leadership. 43% think John Boehner and company are doing a worse job than Nancy
Pelosi and the Democrats did when they were in charge. 36% think the GOP leaders are
doing a better job, and 19% say they have been about the same. Independents say by a
44-30 margin that Republicans have been doing worse. Further, 48% trust President
Obama more to lead the country in the right direction, while 42% have more faith in the
GOP. The sentiment with independents is 49-37 for Obama"

Provisional Voting.A provisional ballot is a ballot that is marked by a voter but is not counted at the time it is cast. It is issued to a voter who is unable to provide the poll workers with documentation as required by Wisconsin and federal law.
There are two circumstances in which a voter is entitled to receive a provisional ballot:
1.A qualified elector who has been issued a current and valid Wisconsin driver’s license registers to vote at a polling place on election day, but cannot list the driver’s license number on the registration;
2.A first-time Wisconsin voter who registers by mail but does not provide an identifying document establishing proof of residence at the time he or she submits the registration form and is unable to provide the required proof of residence at the polling place.
Provisional ballots are NOT given when a voter is at the wrong polling place. If a voter appears at the wrong polling place, he or she will be directed to the proper location.
Provisional ballots are also NOT given when a person is attempting to register in-person at the polling place and does not provide the required proof of residence or cannot use a corroborator.
A provisional ballot will not be counted unless the voter provides the required information to the poll workers or the municipal clerk by 4:00 p.m. of the day following the election.
Instructions for voters who cast a provisional ballot are here.

Nearly two years to go until the next Presdential Election and already the Tea Party is deciding how to slice and dice voters.
Here’s a new Tea Party plank: Don’t let renters vote.
Gawker reported that Judson Phillips, president of prominent Tea Party group Tea Party Nation, has a terrific idea: “The Founding Fathers… put certain restrictions on… the right to vote… you had to be a property owner. And that makes a lot of sense.”

Who will you vote for? In the run-up to the UK elections, as the government panics over voter apathy, WORLDbytes volunteers check out public opinion on the streets of London. This snap shot provides some interesting insights. A surprising number do intend to vote but the lack of enthusiasm is obvious. Some feel the elections will change little. Others say politicians are out of touch and MPs no longer represent our hopes and aspirations for the future. So, does voting now mean putting a tick in a box as a duty? One contributor suggests we need young people to stand for election and get rid of the old brigadeWho will you vote for? In the run-up to the UK elections, as the government panics... more
