Who ever wins the 2008 election will recieve the mess that Bush has let behind to clean up not only the things we as americas are aware of but also the unseen problems that are kept away from the public. This winner so called will recieve the worst mess ever in US History. Although Al has great plans for the country he would first have to bare the resentment that the poeple would feel for him while he is fixing the current adminstrations stupidity. He will have to wear shame of an inept previous president. I have spent so much time these past few weeks reading the Gore petition and all the posts about him here at Current. I have wondered why many of us do not simply choose another candidate and move on. What strikes me is that so many of us feel cheated by the 2000 election and by the resulting chaos that has followed. Many other candidates offer a change that may well lead us back to a better place. Still it is difficult to let go of the idea of a possible Gore run.
Perhaps this is because we feel a need for a complete turnaround...back to the time before the events of the last seven years so radically changed the world's view of America and in fact our own view of ourselves. When something is "stolen" you want it back. You don't want something close to it. You want the original.
We have all grown since then, a bit harder and more cynical. What I think we want is to shed that thicker skin, to feel refreshed, renewed, reinvigorated. We want to regain that former part of ourselves and our nation as we knew it. That is why Al Gore is so important to us. And those who follow his career know that he has grown as well and still seems to embody the hope that many of us have lost. Your silence is difficult Mr. Gore and while you owe us nothing, I ask you to think of those who supported you then and believe in you still. It is difficult to let go and though you may be a recovering politician, we cannot shed our citizenship. I wish that you would join this discourse if only to give us some advise. Politicians are what we have. Our votes and our voices hold our place in this democracy. We look to you for the strength and courage to move forward.

Follows the progress of a campaign in Western Massachusetts to place Al Gore on the ballot for the Democratic Party primary. Hillary is *not* inevitable if Al steps into the race. A new CBS Poll shows that there is no significant difference in support for Gore versus Clinton among Democratic primary voters (even though CBS has given their poll results a different spin).
Keep in mind that in the CBS Poll, 456 interviews were conducted with Democratic primary voters. The margin of error for this subgroup is plus or minus 5 percentage points.
"When former Vice President Al Gore, who has not entered the race, is added as a choice for the Democratic nomination, he emerges as a serious contender. Gore garners support of 32 percent of Democratic primary voters, while Clinton gets 37 percent, Obama 16 percent, and Edwards 7 percent."!
Given that the MOE is 5% and Gore and Clinton differ by only 5%, then this poll does not demonstrate a statistically significant difference in support for Gore v. Clinton.
IMO, if he declared his candidacy, his numbers would rise drawing voters from Clinton, Obama, and Edwards. Why? If he declares now or early next year, then his views on all issues - climate crisis, war, health care, etcetera - would get exposure and he would attract more voters. Right now most people aren't aware of his views. Also, if he declared his candidacy and announced up front that Obama or Edwards would be his VP - his ratings would rise dramatically.

Yes... we are putting him there and you can help. Did you know Eisenhower was drafted into the presidency? After he was placed on NH's ballot (like we are doing with Gore in CA & several other states), he changed his mind and decided to run. We are doing the same thing with Al because the future of our country and the planet we live on hang in the balance. California Democrats, please download (link in the upper left hand corner), sign, & collect signatures to help (further directions below). We CAN do this! I posted this over at dKos, but was suggested if it was posted here, it would be more likely that VP Gore would read it. So here is hoping.
So I want to pose this question. Is Al Gore testing us? My wife gave me as a birthday present Al Gore's recent book, The Assault on Reason. I've heard Randi Rhodes talk about many times, even saying we should all read it this summer. Well, the summer passed, and I hadn't moved my butt. I've got a good reason, I was busy writing my thesis. And if my advisor happens to read this diary, aren't you happy that is over? I am.
Anyhow, on a recent trip, I was able to read a large portion of the book. I found myself captivated. None of what Al Gore said about the Bush administration was really new news to me, but to see it all there .. all 7 years worth of this Bush-crapola was .. in the least, nauseating.
But then Al Gore would always draw these great analogies from non-political things (including Newton's third law of motion) and parallels from the past. And he would say what we need to do better. But I kept thinking, while reading his book, why isn't he running.

So he talks about TV and how it is a one way medium .. information comes out, but we can't respond. And how the media has be driven to the 30 second sound bite. I felt this might have been a little self analysis at his 2000 campaign and at Kerry in 2004 .. neither could really master the sound bite quite as well as Bush. But then again, Bush was a one trick pony .. scare people and that is enough to grab their attention.
One part of his book that struck me is how he says that democracy breaks down when those in power are rich .. because only the rich and afford to get their message out there. So this made me wonder, is Al Gore testing us? He doesn't have to be out there on the road telling people he is for this or that and maybe even have a out-of-place makaka moment (probably not that bad, maybe more like a Kerry botched joke moment).
Anyhow, so here we all are. We read the book. Agree with it. Talk to others about it. Form organizations to support him. All this, and he doesn't have to do a thing. He jumps in, and says look .. I'm not here because I'm rich, but because the people support me. No special interest groups like big pharma. I'm here because some quarter of a million people (that is http://www.draftgore.org on line petition plus their paper form which I've read collected about 50,000 people as of a few days ago) really want me to be here.
The more I read his book, the more I feel he is saying this. To use a phrase he uses from Sir Author Conan Doyle .. Al Gore really seems to be the "dog that does not bark." That is, his silence is speaking volumes. But of course, have we understood his message correctly. And my limitation of being a mere (biased) human says, I could be all wrong. But I certainly hope not.

At The Economic Club of Chicago dinner Wednesday night Gore repeated the refrain: "the climate crisis is not a political issue, it's a moral issue" as though the two are mutually exclusive. I believe this is a fallacy. For contradiction, one need not look far: I think we would all agree that health care for children is a moral issue, but it is also clearly a political issue right now.

It took a long time for me (although not sure I am entirely) to get past the 2000 election results and how the office of the presidency was stolen from you. I'm just an ordinary citizen so I can't imagine how you and your family felt.
2004 came around - I kept looking for your name but then John Kerry - NO, Edwards (?)
2008 and I'm still holding onto the hope that you will run and claim your rightful place -
Clinton-NO, Obama-NO, Edwards-(?), the others-NO
The only reason you're not the lead nominee is because you haven't declared your bid
to run. The registered voters who voted for you in 2000 are still ready and waiting PLUS all the Democrats, Republicans, and Independents who see the mistake that was made at that point in time. I'm not saying there won't be naysayers but the grassroots support is there and won't the 2000 mistake happen again.
Americans need your wisdom, commitment, family values and the list goes on. our wife, Tipper will make a wonderful First Lady. I think about my grandchildren, as I'm sure you do too - their future is too precarious to let the status quo continue.
I am a registered voter, woman and formerly supported former President Clinton but:
1) Al Gore is my ONLY choice - I don't want to throw my vote away but I won't vote
Clinton or Republican.
2) Future Supreme Court appointments are stake - the current administration has
damaged this branch and rights of US citizens with it's selections.
3) Foreign Policy - we need someone with experience to get confidence in us restored
(look what the current administration did to Colin Powell who is highly respected)
4) I remember a speech Bush gave around June or July of his first year in office and
it sent chills up my spine because I knew he was going to lead us into war by any
means necessary. The current Republican nominees won't change this.
5) Hillary is not meant to the first female president or vice president.
6) Who would really be president (Hillary or the former president?)
7) No more scandals and impeachments - America doesn't this need anymore
I know it's your decision, along with your family, to run. Don't worry about the media and naysayers - the majority of Americans see them for what they are and just ignore them, as I do. If you think you can handle it - I know your family will be there for you.
I think your parents hoped for this destiny for you.
