Divers pulled seven bodies out of the Sava River and fought strong currents Friday to search for five other missing people after two canoes were crushed running over a dam in southeastern Slovenia.
Two people managed to swim ashore after their boats broke up and capsized but one died Friday in the hospital, raising the death toll to 8, according police spokesman Pavel Perc. The second survivor remained hospitalized.
The accident happened late Thursday, when two large canoes decided to run over a dam under construction near Sevnica, a town 56 miles (90 kilometers) southeast of the capital of Ljubljana. At that section, the dam, part of a hydroelectric plant, is currently built only to about the height of the water.

Sure, he was supposed to be dead... killed in a canoeing accident... but that didn't stop John Darwin from 'hoping to offer canoe holidays at his tropical retreatÂ’ in Panama. I'm sorry, but this story is straight out of a soap opera and I can't help but snicker. I mean, it's really sad what these people did to their family all for a bit of cash. In these cases I really just have to shake my head and wonder what some people are thinking. Sure, he was supposed to be dead... killed in a canoeing accident... but that... more

Yet another, unsurprising, revelation that the sons of John Darwin supposedly didn't know about their Dad still being alive. Something makes me want to believe them, but as this Canoe case continues to sink, I'm becoming more and more dubious.
Here's a thought though, Who took the picture? Yet another, unsurprising, revelation that the sons of John Darwin supposedly... more

Forget the insurance scam. The victims of this continually twisting story are the couple's sons, Anthony and Mark. They've released a statement saying that they feel they've been scammed, and that they want no more contact with their parents.
"If allegations of a confession from our mam are true then we very much feel that we have been the victims in a large scam... Having seen the recent media speculation surrounding our parents ever since our dad was arrested, we are very much in an angry and confused state of mind. How could our mam continue to let us believe our dad had died when he was very much alive? We have not spoken to either of our parents since our dad's arrest and at this present time we want no further contact with them. We have been in constant contact with the police and will be helping them with their enquiries in any way we can."
This is really heartbreaking. If my parents did this to me, I can't even imagine how I would react. Losing a parent, and then grieving about it, and learning to live with your loss is one thing. And then to find out is was all a big lie...and for some money?? It's absolutely tragic.Forget the insurance scam. The victims of this continually twisting story are the... more

To the surprise of nobody, the wife of John Darwin, the canoeist who was reported to have died five years ago, has allegedly confessed to knowing he was alive for all this time. Pictures of the two together in Panama last year had already done the job for her, but under increasing pressure from the press and the police she apparently finally admitted her she'd been aware her husband wasn't dead when she made the move to Panama following a massive life insurance payout.
She's got even more explaning to do; early reports are suggesting her sons weren't involved in the plot and had been led to believe their father was dead.To the surprise of nobody, the wife of John Darwin, the canoeist who was reported to... more

OK, this story is getting juicy! Now police say they have arrested the missing canoeist in connection with the disappearance of John Darwin in 2002. The report is a bit vague, but others are saying that in fact police have been investigating the Panama connection for three months, and may have known that Darwin was alive for six months! The wife has been contacted in Panama and she says she plans to come back to Britain to see her husband, although not right away because of visa issues. Unfortunately for her she did claim life insurance "in good faith" but may be required to repay it... This is leading to a lot of speculation about whether Darwin's death was a scam. This is strange. More to come...OK, this story is getting juicy! Now police say they have arrested the missing... more

A canoeist who went missing, presumed drowned, more than five years ago, has walked into a London police station.
The shattered remains of John Darwin's red canoe were found washed up on a beach in Seaton Carew, near Hartlepool, in March 2002.
An extensive search was launched but no trace was ever found of Mr Darwin, who was then aged 51.
"It is not known at this time where he has spent the last five-and-a-half years," said a police spokesman.
Cleveland Police said that Mr Darwin, a married father-of-two, walked into the West End Central Police Station in London at 17.30 GMT last night.
The spokesman added: "Mr Darwin is fit and well and relatives have been informed of his whereabouts."A canoeist who went missing, presumed drowned, more than five years ago, has walked... more
