Montana Senators have sidelined a seed bill that sought standards for how biotech companies test crops for patent infringement, burying the bill after getting a private dinner with Monsanto representatives.
When farmers buy genetically engineered seeds, they must agree not to harvest and reuse them from year to year. Some farmers, however, argue that pollen can drift with wind and water, exposing small growers to expensive legal tussles with big biotech companies even when they are innocent.
The bill would have required Monsanto and other companies to get permission from a farmer before taking a sample from their crops. If the farmer denied permission, the company could seek a court order. Under the measure, both the farmer or company could also ask the state Department of Agriculture to oversee the sampling.Montana Senators have sidelined a seed bill that sought standards for how biotech... more
There is a revolution happening in the farm fields and on the dinner tables of America -- a revolution that is transforming the very nature of the food we eat.
THE FUTURE OF FOOD offers an in-depth investigation into the disturbing truth behind the unlabeled, patented, genetically engineered foods that have quietly filled U.S. grocery store shelves for the past decade.
From the prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada to the fields of Oaxaca, Mexico, this film gives a voice to farmers whose lives and livelihoods have been negatively impacted by this new technology. The health implications, government policies and push towards globalization are all part of the reason why many people are alarmed by the introduction of genetically altered crops into our food supply.
Shot on location in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, THE FUTURE OF FOOD examines the complex web of market and political forces that are changing what we eat as huge multinational corporations seek to control the world's food system. The film also explores alternatives to large-scale industrial agriculture, placing organic and sustainable agriculture as real solutions to the farm crisis today.
"Big Pharma runs the Food and Drug Administration, which is supposed to regulate it. Our Fascist system routinely shuttles bureaucrats and executives back and forth between them, to such an extent that it is realistic to consider them two legs on the same bug. Big Pharma/FDA is presently using government force to outlaw vitamins, via Codex Alimentarius, coming soon to your local 'health food' store.
Big Food includes companies like Monsanto Chemical, a monster straight out of science fiction alien horror. With help from the government, Monsanto is literally trying to monopolize agricultural seeds. If it succeeds, it will control food. It is presently conducting a reign of terror against the world’s farmers, many of whom are committing suicide. The Monsanto monster will not stop until it kills us..."

"it's how food is produced, not how far it is transported, that matters most for global warming, according to new research published in ES&T. In fact, eating less red meat and dairy can be a more effective way to lower an average U.S. household's food-related climate footprint than buying local food, says lead author Christopher Weber of Carnegie Mellon University."
I say go local and organic, but this article reinforces to me that it is worth the extra cost to support organic agriculture.Excerpt:

The Guardian reports that genetically modified crops may be grown in hidden locations in Britain amid fears that anti-GM campaigners are winning the battle over the controversial technology. Officials at Defra confirmed they are looking at a range of options to clamp down on vandalism to GM crop trials, after intense lobbying by big crop biotech companies. The firms have warned that trials of GM crops are becoming too expensive to conduct in Britain because of the additional costs of protecting fields from activists. The Guardian reports that genetically modified crops may be grown in hidden locations... more
Scientists in New Zealand and Japan have created a "tear-free" onion using biotechnology to switch off the gene behind the enzyme that makes us cry.
My guess is that now the onion will probably end up causing loose stool or some other exciting and embarrassing side effect. Cry no more! Science is here to help!

European Union environmental officials have determined that two kinds of genetically modified corn could harm butterflies, affect food chains and disturb life in rivers and streams, and they have proposed a ban on the sale of the seeds, which are made by DuPont Pioneer, Dow Agrosciences and Syngenta.
Banning the applications for corn crops also would mark a bold new step for European environmental authorities, who are already aggressively pursuing regulations on emissions from cars and aircraft, setting it at odds with the United States and angering industries.
These products have been grown in the U.S. and other countries for years, said Stephen Norton, a spokesman for the United States trade representative. We are not aware of any other case when a product has been rejected after having been reviewed and determined safe by European food safety authorities, he said.

Go EU, here in the US we're idiots right now. We basically can't be trusted at this point in time. On anything, anywhere. Sad to say it's true. Please ignore our politicians and corporations telling of the safety of GMOs.
About 70% of the food we eat contains genetically modified ingredients and is not labeled. The biotechnology industry is spending $50 million a year to convince us that this technology is our only hope for feeding the world and saving the environment. Family farmers are disappearing at an astonishing rate as people continue to go hungry both here and abroad.
Using hilarious and disturbing archival footage and featuring interviews with farmers, scientists, government officials and activists, FED UP! presents an entertaining, informative and compelling overview of our food production system from the Green Revolution to the Biotech Revolution and what we can do about it.

Ever eat major brands of bread, crackers or cereal? Canned soups or frozen dinners? If so, there's a good chance you're ingesting genetically engineered soy, courtesy of chemical companies such as Monsanto. And if this is the first time you're hearing about it, it's because the U.S. government has allowed genetically modified organisms to be released into our food without adequate labeling or testing
So, has anyone figured out yet that I like Greenpeace?Ever eat major brands of bread, crackers or cereal? Canned soups or frozen dinners? If... more
