Inspired by a recent mural in downtown Ottawa by Shepard Fairey (Obey), I've been making my own stickers and putting them up across the city. As always the Internet provided a wealth of info on the subject, everything from making stickers out of regular printer paper and homemade glue to using shipping labels and shelf liner paper.
I chose the latter method, starting out by constructing the image in photoshop, then tracing off of my monitor directly onto white shelf liner, colouring it in with permanent marker, and finally spraying it with several layers of glossy clear coat spray paint. (after the first couple were made and put up I found the clear coat necessary to give it a bit of protection from the elements and prevent the ink from fading.) The shelf liner paper sticks really well to any metal surface that I've tested so far as long as the surface is clean, and the longer it is allowed to set the harder it will be to peel off. For application I just carry a dish cloth and ruler, wiping the surface with the cloth and using the ruler to flatten the sticker as I peel it from one side to the other.
I've started a tumblr to share the finished products. Nothing serious, just something fun to do for the passed month or two while I await the day I move and can start working on music more seriously again.
The tumblr can be found here, follow me:
http://hvyhnds.tumblr.com/
If you've never been to http://www.instructables.com/ I suggest checking that out as well, all kinds of good DIY stuff can be found there.
Making your own stickers is fun and fairly inexpensive, however I have found that I am limited by the size of my monitor, I think the next step to start making stickers on a larger scale is to fool around with tracing from an old overhead projector.
Have fun, don't get busted and feel free to share your work either here or on tumblr.Inspired by a recent mural in downtown Ottawa by Shepard Fairey (Obey), I've been... more

Buzzfeed says there is no excuse for this, kind of have to agree. Turns out Iggy Pops torso area is a now almost face like feature and can be applied onto the faces of famous folk.
Potential costume party idea right here, especially built to terrify or maybe character for a David Lynch film.

OK, so Vampires Suck seems to have resonated with those tired with Twilight -- but that's not the only vampire film coming out with a title like that. There's also a little-known Canadian flick called Suck coming out on DVD this fall, featuring cameos by Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, Moby, and Henry Rollins. Here's what Iggy had to say about his part:
Q: Who do you play? Are you a vampire?
A: I'm just a guy, a local hero, who's been through it all, but still has some issues. An older musician with issues. The interesting thing about it is that it was a conversational and a human role. I get a lot of things where people ask me to leap electric fences, and rape junebugs. Crazy, whatever, and that’s not going to help. My character, he’s a regular guy, and I tell them, in the story, I’m the first to recognize the vampires, because I’ve been around. I just know by looking at them. How people look and what they do, you learn shorthand after a while to size people up.
Q: How much was involved? How long were you set? Did you get to improv any?
A: I was in and out of that set for two days. My part was scripted and I threw in some lines, “When you get famous, the same cops who busted you before will want your autograph.” They were happy with that. I like being in the movies, but if I were sincerely after being in the movies, I’d be in LA right now. I’m not that sincere.
Q: What about doing more film scores?
A: I wish somebody would give me a film to score. The best thing that ever happened to me along those lines was when Alex Cox was making Repo Man, and I was down and out, and he came to this little hovel I was living in and he said, “Write me a theme.” That was good. I had a pretty good experience doing film music for Johnny Depp, when he directed The Brave. It’s almost better if it’s an assignment, is what I’m saying at this point. I need that. It could be as simple as someone hiring us to do a song that gave advice to bad kids, you know? Like “My Advice, F--k You" could be the song.

A “severe thunderstorm” blew in from the Baltic Sea Sunday and touched down on Sonisphere Finland. Though it only lasted about five minutes, the clang of Thor’s hammer left its mark. Two people were hospitalised with serious injuries (no longer critical as of publication) and forty others were treated for minor injuries.

Here's where it started.
Our awesome music licensing coordinator, Jen Pray (yes, she of the John Hughes greatest hits of a generation dressing down of our then-intern) let loose with a little rant on Twitter:
@prennyjay: Dear Trailer Houses, Promo Depts, Music Supers, Directors, & Producers: STOP USING BEP "I GOTTA FEELING."
(Watch one example above from the Oprah Winfrey Show. Ironically, this is an embeddable clip, but none the BEP's actual video of this song is not.)
I retweeted at @current_music, asking for what else you'd plead to never again be licensed to anything because if you once loved it you've now lost all respect. Your responses were too good to truncate in mere 140-character bites, so here they are in their entirety:
@terabyte240 @current_music YES - I realize MJ was probably up to his ears in debt, but knock it off with the Beatles' "Come Together". Gonna scream.
@hennepinhaiku @current_music: No MGMT/no Juno Soundtrack pieces/Kid Cudi's tired.
@meganwest @current_music half of Kasabian's first album.
@pseudopseudo @current_music Iggy Pop - "Lust For Life". Not really on *everything*, but on enough stuff that I die a little inside when I hear it.
@NTChaddius @current_music Some have been trying to bring back the "Requiem for a Tower" mix with a slightly different beat... we're not fooled
@WhiteGoodman @current_music New Radicals "You Get What you Give." Anything by Smash Mouth.
@Ellovater @current_music the fray's "you found me" Makes me want to write "you lost me"
@sarahindie @current_music The Turtles' "Happy Together." I used to love that song. Now it brings up memories of dancing bagels and cream cheese, etc.
@kid_amy @current_music ugh, I just heard Digable Planets "Rebirth of Slick" for a Tide commercial yesterday! and also New Order's "Ceremony" I like those songs, just found it appalling they were being used in commercials :(
@lexicaljewel @current_music Blur - Song 2. Good god.

Former Stooges guitarist James Williamson was in the parking lot of his dentist’s office earlier this year when he heard a familiar voice on his cellphone: Iggy Pop. “He asked me if I wanted to play guitar again,” says Williamson, who hasn’t performed a single gig since the Stooges dissolved in 1974. “I was about to take an early retirement from my job in Silicon Valley, so I figured ‘What the hell, let’s do it.’ ” Williamson spent time last month in Los Angeles rehearsing with the Stooges (minus Pop) — bassist Mike Watt, drummer Scott Asheton and saxophonist Steve McKay — and they just booked their first gig: on May 2nd and 3rd of next year they’re going to perform Raw Power in its entirety at the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in London.
more in the link...
UPDATE: All Tomorrow's Parties tells us that the Raw Power performances will NOT be during an ATP Festival, but will rather be part of ATP's Don't Look Back series, in which bands perform classic albums in their entirety. These shows will take place at Hammersmith Apollo, and the Stooges will be joined by two opening acts performing full albums.Former Stooges guitarist James Williamson was in the parking lot of his... more

But this time, you've got a one-eyed Malcolm McDowell, Alice Cooper, Henry Rollins and Iggy Pop! And pseudo-alt soundtracks breathlessly repeating "I'm going nowhere..."

Car insurance company Swiftcover, which features Iggy Pop in its adverts has admitted it refuses to cover musicians.
The veteran rocker is the star of the firm's "Get a life. Get Swiftcovered" campaign.
Swiftcover, part of the Axa insurance group, claimed it chose the American singer - whose hits include Lust for Life and The Passenger - to be the face of the company as an actor who "loves life" rather than as a musician.
But the online insurance firm has been criticised for turning down people who work in the music and entertainment industry for car insurance, citing higher levels of risk and potential claims costs as its reasons.
The Advertising Standards Authority said it has launched an investigation after receiving 12 complaints from those deemed ineligible because of their jobs.
Tim Soong, who plays bass guitar in Roguetune, said he planned to report Swiftcover to the ASA.
"The customer services operator told me they don't insure musicians," he said. "When I mentioned Iggy Pop, she said his case was different because he is American."

The godfather of punk guitar, Ron Asheton of the Stooges, was found dead Tuesday in his Ann Arbor, Mich., home.
The Stooges emerged in 1967 out of Ann Arbor with Iggy Pop (aka Jim Osterberg) on vocals, Asheton on guitar and his younger brother, Scott Asheton, on drums. Dave Alexander played bass.
The Stooges never achieved commercial success (their 1969 debut peaked at Number 106), but the punk acts that followed -- from the New York Dolls to the Sex Pistols and the Ramones -- cite them as their single biggest influence.The godfather of punk guitar, Ron Asheton of the Stooges, was found dead Tuesday in... more
