Indianapolis -- Football fans watching Super Bowl XLVI can remain seated during the pregame ceremonies this year, because the singing of The Star-Spangled Banner will be preempted by a television commercial for Dodge trucks.
“At $7 million a minute, we can’t spare the time it takes for the National Anthem to be performed,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell explained.
“And don’t try to accuse us of being unpatriotic here. No one’s a bigger fan of Belichick and Brady than I am. It’s just that the advertiser made us an offer we can’t refuse.”
The sponsor of the ad, the Chrysler Corporation, is now owned by the Italian automaker Fiat.
“Perhaps we will play the Italian National Anthem during our commercial,” a Fiat spokesman said. “It is much more soothing than the American anthem. No bombs bursting or rockets glaring. We play nice.”
Upon learning of the Star-Spangled ban, Congressional Crybaby John Boehner (R-Ohio) immediately assembled The House Un-American Subcommittee to enforce Americanism in this matter.
“We expect the esteemed panel’s findings to be available by Super Bowl LIII at the latest,” he declared. “But I don’t know exactly when that will be, because I don’t understand Roman numerals.”
Pundits, meanwhile, speculated that the Super Bowl snub might be the beginning of the end for the Star-Spangled Banner.
“It’s hard to sing. Nobody knows what the words mean. And it has no beat, so you can’t even dance to it,” one observer said. “How about replacing it with a classic, like Hammer’s U Can’t Touch This? That should shut the Italians up.”Indianapolis -- Football fans watching Super Bowl XLVI can remain seated during the... more

Elizabeth Hughes, 8, made her debut signing the national anthem at an AHL Norfolk Admirals (the Tampa Bay Lightning's affiliate) game against the Connecticut Whale (New York Rangers' affiliate) last Friday night. Angelic voice, bundle of nerves ... and then after the words "gave proof," her microphone abruptly cut out.
What happened next might be something we've seen before at a sporting event, but that never lacks for inspiration (and maybe a misty eye or two). There's a moment around 1:30 into this clip that gives us hope for humanity.

Eight-year-old Elizabeth Hughes made her singing debut at the Norfolk Admirals game the other day, and was doing an awesome job until everyone's performing nightmare happened: the mic died.
Instead of enduring an awkward silence and a nervous dude rummaging around for a new mic like you'd expect, the crowd didn't miss a beat and soon the entire stadium filled with thousands of voices picking up where Elizabeth left off.
After a crazy week like this one, it's refreshing to see some good old fashioned American unity.

It isn’t acceptable, where a G appears in the sheet music, to sing a G. No, no. Instead, the diva (and everybody is a diva these days) runs a G scale or two, performs a series of vox acrobatica in the general vicinity of G, then moves onto the next note, which also apparently needs a good bit of “interpreting.” Not “arranging” – some actual arranging wouldn’t be a bad idea at all. But arranging and freelance improvisational histrionics are not the same thing. It isn’t acceptable, where a G appears in the sheet music, to sing a G. No, no.... more

By now, you're probably either read about or seen Jennifer Hudson's stirring rendition of the national anthem before Sunday night's Super Bowl.
But after the game, the show's producer, "American Idol" music director Ricky Minor, told The Associated Press that, at his request, Hudson lip-synched the anthem to a previously recorded track.By now, you're probably either read about or seen Jennifer Hudson's stirring... more

What a concept, to update a countries old national anthem. I can see people lining up on both sides of the fence to argue the pros and cons of changing the traditional national anthem of any country. I went to the Advance Australia Dare website to see what all the fuss was about and was delighted by what I found.
Click through to see the cool artwork that was created to garner interest from the Aussie public.
I'd be interested to hear back from us Americans what do you think... is it cool to update or change a countries national anthem? Would you be cool with American changing our national anthem to reflect more on the current times with new language?
I think its a great idea, as the Australian website points out their national anthem is over 120 years old... its time for an update.
What do you think?

Apparently us Brits aren't all that great when it comes to knowing our own country's national anthem, as more of us recognise the theme tune to EastEnders than God Save the Queen.
The poll, conducted by the Performing Rights Society (PRS) saw EastEnders come in as the most recognisable tune, taking 37% of the vote, followed by 36% who put the national anthem as their second most recognisable tune, with Match of the Day and Corrie not far behind.
Ellis Rich, Chairman of PRS said: "Music is part of our daily lives, and embedded within British culture. We are so lucky that composers and songwriters can create iconic music which we all remember and love."
Maybe they should have God Save the Queen as EastEnders theme tune, I bet Dot Branning would love it...
