On January 28, 2010, eight Sundance ‘10 filmmakers will take their films from San Franciso, CA to Brooklyn, NY and beyond. Dubbed Sundance Film Festival U.S.A, the new initiative is being pitched by the festival as “a night of ideas across the country.”
In Park City on that night, the event will be anchored by the North American premiere of Michael Winterbottom and Mat Whitecross’s “The Shock Doctrine,” based on the Naomi Klein book, featuring a screening of the film and a deeper discussion lead by Robert Redford.

Sundance will "dispatch eight other festival films"to the other eight locations around the United States.
It's an interesting concept and one that'll happen in the middle of the festival, so who knows if "buzz films" will be shipped out or how this will work.http://www.indiewire.com/article/sundance_fest_goes_nationwide_for_one_night_only/... more

Flipper was one of the most beloved television characters of all time. But ironically, the fascination with dolphins that he caused created a tragic epidemic that has threatened their existence and become a multi-billion dollar industry. The largest supplier of dolphins in the world is located in the picturesque town of Taijii, Japan. But the town has a dark, horrifying secret that it doesn't want the rest of the world to know. There are guards patrolling the cove, where the dolphin capturing takes place, who prevent any photography. The only way to stop the evil acts of this company and the town that protects it is to expose them....and that's exactly what the brave group of activists in The Cove intend to do. Armed with state-of-the-art surveillance equipment, the members of the small group, led by the most famous dolphin trainer in the world, devise a covert plan to infiltrate the cove to document the horrifying events that happen there. Along the way, they uncover what may be the largest health crisis facing our planet— the poisoning of our seas. Part environmental documentary, part horror film, part spy thriller, The Cove is as suspenseful as it is enlightening. The final result is a heart-wrenching, but inspirational, story that shows the true power of film in the hands of people who aren't afraid to risk everything for a vital cause.

Louie Psihoyos is widely regarded as one of the top photographers in the world. He was hired directly out of college to shoot for National Geographic and created images for the yellow-bordered magazine for 18 years. His ability to bring humanity and wit to complicated science stories carries over to his filmmaking. An ardent diver and dive photographer, he feels compelled to show the world the drastic decline of our planet's crucial resource: water.

Wow. Kudos to the New Mexico Film Office for bringing something like this to their state.
"Redford launches ‘Sundance’ for Hispanics, Native Americans
Hollywood icon Robert Redford has announced a programme aimed at helping Hispanic and Native American moviemakers in the southwestern US state of New Mexico.
The programme, dubbed ‘Sundance in New Mexico,’ is sponsored by state arts and film offices to “create and expand upon training programs in film, arts, and the environment,” according to a statement from the office of Governor Bill Richardson. “These programmes will be designed specifically for New Mexico’s Native American and Hispanic filmmakers,” the statement read.
Redford made the announcement in the New Mexico city of Santa Fe along with governor Richardson, a one-time Democratic presidential hopeful.
“My love of New Mexico goes back many, many years,” said Redford. “My commitment to this state began with ‘The Milagro Beanfield War’,” a 1988 film that also starred Melanie Griffith, Ruben Blades and Sonia Braga.
The programme “marks a new level of commitment ... in supporting the underrepresented voices in our culture, to job creation through the arts, and to the power of partnerships built on mutual goals and aspirations,” said Richardson.
In 1981, Redford founded the Sundance independent film festival, which takes place every year in the western state of Utah."Wow. Kudos to the New Mexico Film Office for bringing something like this to their... more

Across its eight erratic years of existence, the Tribeca Film Festival -- which opened its slim and trim, Second Great Depression-era 2009 edition on Wednesday night with the premiere of Woody Allen's "Whatever Works" -- has largely succeeded in drawing large audiences and establishing its reputation as one of the film world's headline-making events. Whether that reputation is deserved, and what Tribeca's core identity is (or should be) are murkier questions.
Questions about Tribeca's future, and how the competition within the fraternal and fratricidal little world of film festivals might shake out, were thrown into sharp relief by a recent bout of backstage intrigue that set film bloggers and other insiders atwitter. Geoffrey Gilmore, the longtime director of the Sundance Film Festival, abruptly resigned that job on Feb. 17, moving to New York as chief creative officer of Tribeca Enterprises, the entity that operates the festival and related "branded-entertainment businesses and initiatives." Oddly, Tribeca's press release announcing Gilmore's arrival went out that morning, several hours before Sundance confirmed that he was leaving. This was likely just a routine public-relations snafu, but heightened the long-standing perception that no love is lost between the two festivals.
It took less than two weeks for Tribeca's artistic director...

"One would be hard pressed to argue that a call from Robert Redford to the speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, helped salvage money for the arts in the economic-stimulus bill last week.
But it certainly didn’t hurt as arts-friendly members of the House and Senate struggled to preserve $50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts in the final version of the recovery package, approved by both houses on Friday.
There was a whiplash quality to the action surrounding the arts money. As the week wore on, things weren’t looking good. Although a House version of the bill had included the $50 million, the Senate version approved no arts money at all. The Senate even voted 73 to 24 on Feb. 6 for an amendment ruling out stimulus money for museums, arts centers and theaters. And some conservative Republicans had denounced the arts as bonbons for a leftist elite with no place in an emergency stimulus bill.
In his conversation last week with Ms. Pelosi, a California Democrat, Mr. Redford said, he drew on his film experience to argue for the arts as an economic engine. “Ticket takers or electricians or actors — all the people connected with the arts are at risk just like everybody else is,” he said in an interview. He said he also reminded Ms. Pelosi that his Sundance Film Festival brings more than $60 million to Park City, Utah, each year.""One would be hard pressed to argue that a call from Robert Redford to the speaker of... more

After seeing too many edgy, impenetrable, ambitious Sundance movies aiming -- and failing -- to set the world on fire, it can be something of a relief to find a frothy mainstream comedy that actually delivers some entertainment value.
"Motherhood," written and directed by Katherine Dieckmann, is neither earth-shaking nor profound, but it has considerable charm, thanks to an appealing cast and some sharply witty observations about the pressures of child-rearing in Manhattan. It will please audiences who can relate to the tiny, everyday problems that the main character endures. After seeing too many edgy, impenetrable, ambitious Sundance movies aiming -- and... more

"An astonishingly wide-ranging film. An informed and heartfelt examination of the tug of war between public health and private interests."
- New York Times
-Of the 6 billion people on earth, 1.1 billion do not have access to safe, clean drinking water.
About the Film
Irena Salina's award-winning documentary investigation into what experts label the most important political and environmental issue of the 21st Century - The World Water Crisis.
Salina builds a case against the growing privatization of the world's dwindling fresh water supply with an unflinching focus on politics, pollution, human rights, and the emergence of a domineering world water cartel.
Interviews with scientists and activists intelligently reveal the rapidly building crisis, at both the global and human scale, and the film introduces many of the governmental and corporate culprits behind the water grab, while begging the question "CAN ANYONE REALLY OWN WATER?"
Beyond identifying the problem, FLOW also gives viewers a look at the people and institutions providing practical solutions to the water crisis and those developing new technologies, which are fast becoming blueprints for a successful global and economic turnaround.
