On top of the growing local vehemence about Temple Univ.'s monopolizing crawl, locals are not happy about disruptive college residents' added insult to injury.
So does this means they deserve an RA or law enforced big brother program? What's with this and the suggestion to randomly drug test high schoolers in this region? What's to happen to the rest of Philly's Off-Campus-Housing-ers that have worked HARD to escape dorm dictation? It's Philly's Univ. of the Art's quiet Residential Life program revision of 2006 aaaaall over again.
Some think it's the crimson and white's way of getting students to live on campus (just look at craigslist.org's philly housing options).
Some have argued that the community (the 'Hood fa real-fa real) has forgotten it's own record of nuisance, or has gotten comfortable with creating more since the implant of off campus decoys...

I thought everyone should see this...I'm not quite sure how magic tricks bought at the local shop is a logical tactic for converting people to Christianity, but there's a part of this clip where he recruits a young girl to help him with his show which I thought was particularly disturbing. She's mesmerized by his tricks, but she has no idea what he's trying to do (i.e. preach).
It's a difficult topic to approach though, because I'm not quite sure whether these kinds of activities should be allowed on campuses without a religious affiliation. But then again our University is a public place, and open for a variety of public activity.
Any thoughts?I thought everyone should see this...I'm not quite sure how magic tricks bought... more

I heard about this guys work because he's friends with someone who I'm working with in a film class. He uses a slow shutter speed to create incredible images with light in the night, and this film really showcases how someone even at a pre-professional, Whartonite place like U.Penn can be incredibly creative.
I especially like how he uses a combo of stop motion animation and photography, and he's really well spoken about the craft itself...

Here's some more footage of a particularly long headspin from The Gathering (10.25.07). Every last Thursday of the month, people come out to celebrate all that is hip-hop from 10am-2pm in an alcohol free venue. I was lucky to have stopped by, and pick up some footage of what was going on with my digital camera.
For more footage from The Gathering of that night, check out the University of Pennsylvania or Philadelphia Student News topic pages.

I don't know if this is the next Bilbao or Stonehenge, like the architect supports in the article, but this is definitely an interesting way to incorporate environmental awareness and Israel's memorial for Ariel Sharon all in one.

I know a lot of people are intruiged by the idea of Teach for America. It's a great way to give back, work on our resume, and avoid the reality of actually working in an office 5 days a week right after college.
I was lured by the idea of it too, but have recently come across a variety of media and personal stories that have proved a little less...well...attractive.
Today Wendy Kopp, founder of Teach for America, is coming to speak at Penn, for a lecture and Q&A session at 4:30 p.m. in Huntsman Hall Auditorium G06. I won't be able to make the series, but hopefully she'll address some of the more negative press about self-selecting to ivy leaguers and the like when she speaks.
I'll keep you posted, and if anyone else can post on her speech, i'd be really interested to hear about what she says. I know a lot of people are intruiged by the idea of Teach for America. It's a... more

Check out this competition organized by Red Bull: Anyone can enter, all that you have to do is use a Red Bull can as your primary media (and shout out to Philly for being chosen for the event this year...we have an awesome art scene that's just starting to get recognized, which you'll be able to tell by the quality of the pieces).
Make sure to check out the chess board, bee hive, tube dress and rat race sculptures, all made from cans...my personal favorites.
