A few months ago some US scientists complained in international conferences about the complicity of the US in increasing global warning. Bushs environmental cronies got furious. They drafted guidelines about what may and may not be said by US scientists to their foreign counterparts. The Times of India reports Kevin Watkins, lead author of HDR-2007, warning the developing world about an increase in their poverty due to more frequent extreme weather events. This is that same old argument that the poverty and inaction of the poor nations just breed more poverty. This kind of logic has a way of shifting focus from the responsibility that rich nations have in making us poor. The fact that developed nations are emitting most greenhouse gases is also covered up. The US is the worlds largest environmental polluter and yet has openly discarded the Kyoto Protocol as unsuitable for its economy. According to Lovelock even the grimmest predictions of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which bagged the Nobel Peace Prize for this year, are an understatement of the fact. Reality, has says, is far more grave. His theory is that burning of fossil fuel produces a global haze in the Earths atmosphere which actually reduces the temperature of the earth by a couple of degrees by shielding it. A sudden absence of such shield would prove disastrous for the planet.

President Vicente Calderon described the calamity as one of the worst catastrophes that ever hit the country. He has even cancelled an overseas tour to look after the grim situation. Despite being oil-rich the Gulf-coast region is one of the poorest in the country and the homeless people are in immediate need of fresh drinking water, food and shelter. The historic capital city of Villa Hermosa is inhabited by half a million residents and is overflowed by floods. Although Mexico has not asked for international help, yet the grim situation might demand an international aid flow.

River Thames remained cynosure of every eye for a long time, but the heritage of the river seems to be diminishing. After heavy and incessant rains and flooding, the once beautiful river has given way to a river full of sewage effluents that is increasingly becoming a health hazard for the marine life as well as the human population. Untreated sewage flowing into the river has choked the clean, beautiful river and resulted in toxic algal bloom.
