Christopher Buckley, the author and son of the late conservative mainstay William F. Buckley, said in a telephone interview that he has resigned from the National Review, the political journal his father founded in 1955.
Mr. Buckley said he had “been effectively fatwahed by the conservative movement” after endorsing Barack Obama in a blog posting on TheDailyBeast.com; since then, he said he has been blanketed with hate mail at the blog and at the National Review, where he has written a column.

Video sharing site YouTube Inc. told John McCain’s presidential campaign this week that although election rally videos are important to viewers, they aren’t so important they’re exempt from digital rights concerns.
McCain’s campaign had complained to YouTube that many videos of its electioneering events were pulled from the site because, for example, they contained copyrighted music.
In a letter to Trevor Potter, general counsel of the McCain-Palin 2008 campaign, Zahavah Levine of San Bruno-based YouTube wrote “while we agree with you that the U.S. Presidential election-related content is invaluable and worthy of the highest level of protection, there is a lot of other content on our global site that our users around the world find to be equally important.” A copy of the letter (and of the campaign’s original complaint) was posted online by San Francisco-based CNet (NASDAQ: CNET).
Levine, YouTube’s chief counsel, added, “We try to be careful not to favor one category of content on our site over others.”Video sharing site YouTube Inc. told John McCain’s presidential campaign this... more

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's campaign sharply rejected on Wednesday a conservative columnist's report that civil rights leader Jesse Jackson expects Obama to reduce Israel's clout at the White House.
Jackson himself denounced New York Post columnist Amir Taheri for "selectively imposing his own point of view and distorting mine" in the column that appeared Tuesday.
The column said Jackson predicted to a policy forum in France last week that "decades of putting Israel's interests first" would end and added in an interview that Zionists would lose a great deal of their clout if Obama is elected.

The U.S. Secret Service is investigating a threatening remark directed at Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama during a political event in Scranton.
The agency followed up on a report in The Times-Tribune that a member of the crowd shouted, "Kill him!" after one mention of Mr. Obama's name during a rally Tuesday for Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.
The remark came while congressional candidate Chris Hackett was addressing the crowd at the Riverfront Sports Complex. There is no indication Mr. Hackett or Mrs. Palin, who took the stage a half-hour later, heard the remark.
The remark was reported almost immediately on the newspaper's Web site and today in the print edition.
Times-Tribune employees who covered the rally were interviewed today by the Secret Service.
Spokesman Darrin Blackford said the agency takes the threat seriously and will make an arrest if it can determine who shouted the remark. The U.S. Secret Service is investigating a threatening remark directed at Democratic... more

CNN) — John McCain predicted Sunday he would beat Barack Obama at the final presidential debate this week.
"After I whip his you-know-what in this debate, we're going to be going out 24/7," the Republican nominee told volunteers at his campaign headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, sparking laughter and applause from the group. McCain immediately added: "I want to emphasize again, I respect Senator Obama. We will conduct a respectful race, and we will make sure that everybody else does, too."
Outside the doors of his campaign offices, McCain is fighting to hold on to the traditionally-red state. McCain talked Sunday about the tough fight for Virginia, where Obama currently leads by four points, 49 to 45, in the state's most recent CNN poll of polls. He also pointed to battlegrounds states like Ohio — which Sarah Palin visited Sunday — and Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, and Pennsylvania.
"And I'm telling you, we're coming on and we're going to work 24/7 for the next — who's counting — 22 days," he said.
McCain acknowledged the dip in his poll numbers since the financial crisis began, but said overall trends were in his favor. "…I'd like to give you a little straight talk, we're a couple points down, ok,
nationally, but we're right in this game," he said. "The economy has hurt us a little bit in the last week or two, but in the last few days we've seen it come back up because they want experience, and they want knowledge and they want vision. And we'll give that to America, and I know that we're going to win this race."CNN) — John McCain predicted Sunday he would beat Barack Obama at the final... more

Some news networks have requested that campaign videos be removed for using their footage.
The McCain campaign has asked YouTube to provide a fair use analysis of video clips posted from accounts controlled by political campaigns before deciding whether to take them down, saying it takes too long to get them up in a political season when time is a crucial commodity.
McCain campaign general counsel Trevor Potter, in a letter to YouTube owner Google, said that "overreaching copyright claims had resulted in the removal of non-infringing videos from YouTube, "thus silencing political speech."
Potter said on several occasions ads or videos from the campaign have been subject to take-down notices per the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. He said those ads had included fewer than ten seconds of footage from news broadcasts as a way to comment on issues or the ads themselves, saying they have "no conceivable effect on the market for the allegedly infringed broadcasts."
Potter said that nothing in the law requires YouTube to take down the videos automatically and regardless of legal merit. Some news networks have requested that campaign videos be removed for using their... more

NEW YORK In a lenghty account of a Sarah Palin rally in Scranton, Pa. today, the local paper, the Times-Tribune, relates that at 1:25 p.m. just before she arrived, a candidate for Congress stepped on stage: "Chris Hackett addressed the increasingly feisty crowd as they await the arrival of Gov. Palin.
"Each time the Republican candidate for the seat in the 10th Congressional District mentioned Barack Obama the crowd booed loudly.
"One man screamed "kill him!'"
The report continued: "Supporters have been noted shouting 'kill him,' 'terrorist,' 'off with his head' and other equally incendiary terms about Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. Others have directly suggested Mr. Obama is a Muslim, which he is not, or a traitor. Some comments even drew rebuke from Republican presidential nominee John McCain."

Need a good reason (another one, I mean) not to vote for Sen. John McCain and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin?
How about to save Tina Fey 's life?
"If she wins, I’m done," Fey tells TV Guide. "I can’t do that for four years. And by ‘I’m done,’ I mean I’m leaving Earth."
But that will not keep her from continuing to spoof the former beauty queen right up to election day. And with good reason. The New York Post notes that political impersonations can actually do in a politician.
"Presidential impersonators do influence elections, and in this one, Tina Fey is well on her way to ruining Sarah Palin's political career," said Jerald Podair, a professor of American Studies at Lawrence University.
"Election time is always good for ['SNL'], and this is a bonkers election,” Fey tells TV Guide in the upcoming issue with "30 Rock's" Alec Baldwin on the cover. And that lady is a media star. She is a fascinating person, she’s very likable. She’s fun to play, and the two bits with Amy [Poehler], that was super fun."
So a few more weeks is doable. But having to be Palin for the next four years would be a frightening full-time job.
So if you like Tina Fey, please, please, do her a favor: Do not vote for Sarah Palin.
Frankly, I think there may be quite a few folks who will follow Fey's footsteps if Sarah wins.
How about you?

At the moment of this writing I believe that Obama will win by a landslide four weeks from today. Anybody following developments in the last week can see that the economy has taken over the election. Despite the many advice-to-McCain columns written by scared conservative pundits (mirroring the advice-to-Obama columns written by scared liberal pundits two weeks earlier), there is little the McCain-Palin ticket can do. Don't expect major gaffes from any of the candidates. It's now October 7. The game is over.
air enough, you say. But "by a landslide"? Isn't that a bit silly?
Not if you take into account the Barak Effect.
No, I didn't misspell Obama's first name. I am referring to Ehud Barak, and the 1999 prime ministerial elections in Israel. At the moment of this writing I believe that Obama will win by a landslide four weeks... more

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin acted "within proper and lawful authority" in removing the state's public safety commissioner, the McCain-Palin Republican presidential ticket said on Friday in response to a state report.
An Alaska ethics inquiry found on Friday that Palin, John McCain's vice presidential candidate, abused the power of her state office in connection with the dismissal of Alaska Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan.
The state investigation centered on whether the firing of Monegan was linked to Palin's personal feud with Michael Wooten, a state trooper involved in a contentious divorce with the governor's sister.
The inquiry found that while it was within the governor's authority to dismiss Monegan, she violated the public trust by pressuring those who worked for her to act in a way that advanced her personal wishes. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin acted "within proper and lawful authority" in... more

Asian Americans Likely Favor Obama, Could Affect Outcome of Presidential Election, Says Nat'l Survey
While many Asian American voters are supporting presidential candidate Barack Obama, (D-Ill.), a sizable amount remain undecided, indicating that they could play an important role in the outcome of the election, according to a new national survey released Oct. 6.
Researchers predict that the non-partisan vote, comprised of a number of Asian Americans, will likely come into play in next month's presidential election.
"A very large number of Asian Americans are non-partisan," UC Berkeley associate professor of political science Taeku Lee said in a statement. "The Asian American vote is very much up for grabs: Non-partisans who see either the Democratic or Republican party as closer to them on issues that matter to them are much likelier to vote for that party's candidate."Asian Americans Likely Favor Obama, Could Affect Outcome of Presidential Election,... more

Legendary French actress Brigitte Bardot, 74, has called Sarah Palin a "disgrace to women' in a fiery attack on the American vice-presidential candidate.
The sixties sex symbol said that Republican John McCain's running mate was "disconcertingly stupid" and that she hoped she would lose the November 4 presidential elections. Referring to Mrs Palin's now famous self-portrait as a "pitbull with lipstick", Mrs Bardot – who runs an animal rights foundation – said: "I know dogs well and I can assure you that no pitbull, no dog, nor any other animal is as dangerous as you are. I hope you lose these elections because that would be a victory for the world."
She continued to explain her position: "By denying the responsibility of man in global warming, by advocating gun rights and making statements that are disconcertingly stupid, you are a disgrace to women and you alone represent a terrible threat, a true environmental catastrophe." Bardot also lashed out at Palin for supporting Arctic oil exploration that could threaten ecosystems and for dismissing measures to protect polar bears. "This shows your total lack of responsibility, your inability to protect or simply respect animal life," she wrote.Legendary French actress Brigitte Bardot, 74, has called Sarah Palin a "disgrace... more
