For weeks I have listened to complaints about the Obama’s coming deal with the big banks that was sure to leave main street Americans out in the cold while giving criminal Banksters a get out of jail free card. Today that deal arrived. It is a modest down payment on what the US needs to restore the housing market on main street. Given the Republican Party’s unwillingness to do anything at the federal level to help suffering Americans, it was the best Obama could do, with the help of State Attorneys General from both parties from every state but Oklahoma, whose AG sided with the Banksters. The deal neither leaves main street Americans out in the cold, nor does it give criminal Banksters a get out of jail free card. For weeks I have listened to complaints about the Obama’s coming deal with the... more

What if the Surgeon General were to declare “stupidity” a disease and the National Institutes of Health were to declare a National Emergency and manpower and money were utilized to eliminate stupidity from the human condition? That would be cool!
Years ago, as a young city hall reporter in my hometown of Clinton, Iowa, at the end of a contentious debate over whether or not Clinton would remain the largest city in the state without even a basic building code (it would), one of my favorite council members gave me a quote that I will never forget. As the building code ordinance was defeated yet again, the councilman leaned over to the press table and sighed these words.
“If only stupidity were painful…”

The Department of Health and Human Services issued a mandate saying that all employers, including religious organizations that hire people, must provide health insurance that covers the purchase of contraceptives.
Republicans, always looking for a cudgel with which to beat President Obama, have seized on this as an attack on religious rights. The compliant, corporate-owned, lick-spittle mainstream media has fallen in line, giving Republicans a platform from which to wheedle and lie and distort the issue — with impunity.

Once again, the Obama administration is demonstrating its lack of commitment to core democratic principles on the critical issue of separation of church and state.
On January 20, the White House announced that it planned to implement federal rules that would require employer health insurance plans, including those of church-affiliated institutions such as Catholic universities, hospitals and charities, to provide access to birth control and contraceptives free of charge. These rules would come into effect in 2013 as part of the Obama administration’s overhaul of the health care system.
The Republican Party and the Catholic Church have responded to this announcement with an escalating offensive in the media, accusing the Obama administration of attacking the “religious freedom” of employers. The various Republican presidential candidates have raced to grandstand in front of the cameras, denouncing Obama as “anti-religious.”
In the face of this attack, the White House is desperately seeking to conciliate with the religious right and the Church. “We will continue to work closely with religious groups during this transitional period to discuss their concerns,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. The administration is open to “compromise” on the issue, Obama adviser David Axelrod announced on MSNBC cable TV Tuesday morning.
“We certainly don't want to abridge anyone's religious freedoms, so we're going to look for a way to move forward that both provides women with the preventative care that they need and respects the prerogatives of religious institutions,” Axelrod explained.
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney confirmed that “the president is very interested in finding the appropriate balance between religious beliefs and convictions.”
The rules announced by Obama already exempt churches themselves, a major concession to the Catholic Church and the religious right.
This cowering before those who seek to use religion to limit workers’ access to birth control is one more demonstration that the liberal establishment is neither able nor willing to take a principled stand in defense of democratic rights. The only basis for opposing universal access to contraceptives, which are entirely legal, is religious doctrine. But the First Amendment to the US Constitution has historically been understood to bar the government from making religion the basis of law or social policy.
The impact of any compromise on this issue would fall most heavily on the working class. Under conditions of mass unemployment, cuts in social programs and a corporate assault on wages, the cost of contraceptives for millions of families would be prohibitive. On the other hand, unwanted pregnancies threaten economic disaster for families already struggling to make ends meet.
For the wealthy, the impact would be negligible. They have the means to access birth control in all of its forms.
The New York Times on Wednesday published an account of the internal debate within the Obama administration on the contraceptive rule which makes clear that the move was driven entirely by considerations of electoral expediency rather than political principle. Sebelius, Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett and Deputy Chief of Staff Nancy-Ann DeParle argued in favour of the rule as a vote-getter among women in the November election, while Vice President Joseph Biden and other top advisers warned that antagonizing the Catholic Church would harm Obama’s re-election chances.
As always, the response of the Democrats to the latest right-wing attack is to cringe in fear of alienating the most reactionary sections of the political and media establishment. The Times, citing unnamed administration officials, wrote: “One possible compromise might be to emulate Hawaii, where the rule is in effect, but where employers at religious institutions that do not offer free contraception can get birth control through side benefits, which the employees nominally pay for but which often end up being free.”
The leading figures of the American Revolution of 1776 had nothing but contempt for the entanglement of religion and politics, which they identified with the Dark Ages. In discussions over the First Amendment, Thomas Jefferson called for a “wall of separation” between church and state. James Madison declared that “there is not a shadow of right in the general government to intermeddle with religion.” Madison famously opposed allowing “three pence” of public funds to be spent on religion.
Nearly two and a half centuries later, these sentiments and principles have disappeared from the American political establishment.
Twenty eight states already require all employers, including “faith-based” ones, to provide access to contraceptives through their employee health plans. Moreover, there is overwhelming support in the population, including a majority of Catholics, for providing such contraceptives free of cost.
It is by no means clear whether the Obama administration will reverse itself, or whether it will adopt a sordid compromise along the lines suggested by the New York Times. The internal differences in the administration are evidence that bourgeois electoral considerations militate in both directions.
Any backtracking by the Obama administration, however, would cast a shadow over the existing state laws that require religious employers to provide access to contraception in their employee health plans.By Tom Carter

Another fake humanitarian crisis after provacatuers were sent into Syria to stir dissent, just like what was done in Libya.
Plus don't forget that on March 2nd 2007 Former General Wesley Clark casually explained to Democracy Now's Amy Goodman that the Pentagon had already planned to take out Iran, along with 6 countries in 5 years including Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan (2007 up to 2012).
******
Although the U.S. focus remains on exerting diplomatic and economic pressure on Syria, the Pentagon and the U.S. Central Command have begun a preliminary internal review of U.S. military capabilities, CNN has learned.
The options are being prepared in the event President Barack Obama were to call for them. Two senior administration officials who spoke about the review to CNN emphasized that U.S. policy for now remains the use of non-military options.
The focus on diplomatic options was underscored by the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations in an interview with CNN on Tuesday.
The military’s work to analyze potential military options for Syria has been quietly going on for several weeks, two administration officials confirm to CNN. The bulk of the analysis is being done by staff of General Mattis, who would be the senior commander if the President were to order any action.
Mattis’ analysis is being shared with General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who would then present options to the White House, if it came to that.
“We don’t want to be in the position of suddenly dusting off some five year old plan,” one official said. The official emphasized the work is extremely preliminary but said the military would look at a full range of contingencies.Another fake humanitarian crisis after provacatuers were sent into Syria to stir... more

(Updates with studies, alternate requirements, beginning in fourth paragraph.)
http://www.businessweek.com/news/2012-02-09/obama-to-free-10-states-from-education-s-no-child-rules.html
Feb. 9 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama will announce today that he’s freeing 10 states from requirements of the No Child Left Behind law as they pursue alternate means of judging student progress, an administration official said.
The states obtaining a waiver from the law, pushed by former President George W. Bush, are Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Tennessee.
In exchange for the waiver, the states have agreed to raise standards, improve accountability and take steps to improve teacher effectiveness, said the official, who declined to be identified because an announcement hadn’t been made.
An 11th state, New Mexico, has requested an exemption from the requirements of the 2002 law, and 28 other states, joined by Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, have alerted the Department of Education of their intent to seek waivers.
Almost half of U.S. public schools are labeled failing under the federal No Child Left Behind law. Obama and Education Secretary Arnie Duncan have said the figure is as high as 80 percent, citing it as a reason to offer schools more flexibility.
The estimated percentage of schools that didn’t show adequate progress toward passing state standardized tests of math and reading was 48 percent in 2011, a record and an increase from 39 percent in 2010, according to a report in December by the Center on Education Policy, a Washington-based nonpartisan research group.
State Standards
Under No Child Left Behind, each state establishes its own proficiency tests and determines what constitutes passing. That system penalized states with higher standards and gives them an incentive to dumb down tests, Duncan has said. In addition, high-performing schools can be labeled failing if a subgroup of students -- such as students with disabilities or those who speak English as a second language -- don’t pass tests.
The Obama administration, joined by many local educators, says the law labels too many schools as failing, dictates unworkable remedies and leads to a reduction of education standards, weakened accountability and a narrower curriculum.
The education law was due for an overhaul more than five years ago. The administration submitted suggestions in a “blueprint for reform” in March 2010 but Congress hasn’t acted.
As a result, the administration is taking its own action to grant more flexibility and ease burdens, according to the administration official.
Under the new plans, the 10 states getting waivers would be exempt from 2014 targets of current law, though they still must take steps to boost student performance and close achievement gaps, with an emphasis on raising achievements in lowest- performing schools.
They also would be granted more leeway in using federal education funds targeted at students from low-income families to close those gaps, the official said.

Despite the Arab League observers’ report verifying the threat that the Free Syrian Army (or the “Free Army” (FA) as critics prefer to call it in reference to the fact that many of the organisation’s members are of non-Syrian origin) the European Union responded to the clearly defensive military operation by threatening further sanctions against the Syrian people. WASHINGTON—Recent side-by-side photographic comparisons of Americans before and after he assumed the presidency have confirmed the stress of Barack Obama's time in the White House has taken a significant toll on the U.S. populace, dramatically accelerating the nation's signs of aging.
"It's striking, really, to see how, after just three years of being president, Barack Obama has markedly aged the country," Beltway observer Andrew Soisson said Wednesday, adding that the stress of watching Obama deal with a stagnant economy, multiple wars, and other crises at home and abroad has left the country with more pronounced wrinkles and significantly grayer hair. "It's a far cry from inauguration day, when a younger, healthier, and more vibrant populace watched Obama take the oath of office."
"Remember Obama's 2008 campaign?" Soisson added. "People were energized and full of spunk and vigor. But you look at pictures of Americans then compared to now and it's like night and day."
Photographic analysis indicates the tremendous burdens of Obama's time in the White House has caused Americans' posture to worsen and their faces to become more careworn and pallid. Moreover, the pictures reveal that a nation once filled with hope has been sapped of its energy, most likely the result of the profound day-in-day-out pressures Americans face every time Obama increases the federal deficit, fails to reverse the Bush-era tax cuts on the wealthy, is unable to address the country's immigration crisis, or breaks a campaign promise, such as closing the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay.
According to health experts, the country's stress can be tempered with proper diet and exercise, but the physical transformation is unavoidable, especially considering the incredible demands that have been placed on Americans throughout Obama's first term.
"Mental strain begets physical wear and tear—that's nothing new," said Dr. Richard Vestum, chief wellness officer at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. "But if you have the weight of leading the free world resting on Barack Obama's shoulders, you're experiencing roughly 10 times the anxiety of the average individual in a Western democracy."
"Imagine waking up every morning knowing that Obama has to make the final call on everything from national security to the economy, and is constantly trying to balance those decisions with what is politically advantageous," Vestum added. "That's a very isolating, powerless feeling that would make any citizen appear more haggard."
Vestum said that during each year of the Obama administration, American citizens have aged the equivalent of three ordinary years. He confirmed the aging process is even more severe among the president's die-hard supporters, who, after experiencing three years of lackluster job performance and Obama's compromising of many cherished Democratic initiatives, have aged roughly five years for each "Obama year."
Some experts estimate the Obama presidency may have shaved five to 10 years off the lifespan of Americans.
"Yes, citizens have developed crow's-feet and bags under their eyes, but in their defense, the Obama White House is a pressure cooker for Americans unlike anything most ordinary people will ever experience," Democratic strategist Mitch Kaplan said. "Think about it: You're a United States citizen who has to live with the decision to elect Barack Obama every single day, a decision that constantly affects the entire planet. You'd only sleep four or five hours a night, too."
Sources have confirmed Obama's presidency is not unique in causing rapid aging. George W. Bush's eight years in office left the U.S. populace a wrinkled, shriveled shell of its former self, and the nation aged approximately six years in a mere 18 months as a result of Bill Clinton's sex scandal. Additionally, despite his best efforts, more than 600,000 Americans are believed to have died prematurely when Abraham Lincoln served as commander in chief.
"Being an American citizen and having the fate of the free world in the hands of one of these guys is certainly not easy," said 43-year-old Toledo, OH resident Henry Kessler, who, since Obama took office, has lost a majority of his hair and now walks with a slight hitch in his step. "And in the case of Barack Obama, the longer he's president, the more worried I am about enduring serious, long-term health problems."
"Thankfully, it only has to last until next January," he added.
Medical experts agree the overwhelming stress of a Mitt Romney presidency would kill the entire populace within seconds of his inauguration.WASHINGTON—Recent side-by-side photographic comparisons of Americans before and... more

President Obama has found someone new to blame for his failures: the Founding Fathers - those brave men who fought a war to free America from Great Britain, and establish a republic based on a constitution that is still the envy of the world.
In a video posted Monday at Townhall, Obama told Matt Lauer that people are frustrated because he has not been able to "force Congress to implement every aspect of" his radical agenda.
"Our Founders designed a system that makes it more difficult to bring about change than I would like sometimes,” he said.
But he promised to keep "plodding away, very persistent."
"And, you know what? One of the things about being President is you get better as time goes on," he added.
A post at Freedom's Lighthouse notes:
Uh, that’s because the Founders were trying to prevent exactly what you are trying to do, Mr. President. They did not want the Federal Government to dominate the life of every citizen from cradle to grave. They wanted people to be free – to earn their own keep and keep what they earn. What a concept.
"All hail the king--in his own mind," wrote Greg Hengler of Townhall.
So far, President Obama has blamed George Bush, the Internet, ATM machines and a "messy democracy", among others, for his total failure to lead.
Now, it's all the fault of those pesky Founders who designed a system to ensure America never has a dictatorial chief executive. But not to worry. If he gets re-elected, he'll work on that as well.

Two American brothers of a Mexican casino magnate who fled drug and fraud charges in the United States and has been seeking a pardon enabling him to return have emerged as major fund-raisers and donors for President Obama’s re-election campaign.
The casino owner, Juan Jose Rojas Cardona, known as Pepe, jumped bail in Iowa in 1994 and disappeared, and has since been linked to violence and corruption in Mexico. A State Department cable in 2009 said he was suspected of orchestrating the assassination of a business rival and making illegal campaign donations to Mexican officials.
When The New York Times asked the Obama campaign early Monday about the Cardonas, officials said they were unaware of the brother in Mexico. Later in the day, the campaign said it was refunding the money raised by the family, which totaled more than $200,000.Almost got caught with hand in the cookie jar.

On December 30 of last year, ABC News reported on a 16-year-old Pakistani boy, Tariq Khan, who was killed with his 12-year-old cousin when a car in which he was riding was hit with a missile fired by a U.S. drone. As I noted at the time, the report contained this extraordinary passage buried in the middle:
Asked for documentation of Tariq and Waheed’s deaths, Akbar did not provide pictures of the missile strike scene. Virtually none exist, since drones often target people who show up at the scene of an attack.
What made that sentence so amazing was that it basically amounts to a report that the U.S. first kills people with drones, then fires on the rescuers and others who arrive at the scene where the new corpses and injured victims lie.
In a just-released, richly documented report, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, on behalf of the Sunday Times, documents that this is exactly what the U.S. is doing — and worse:

The Collected Poetry, Leopold Sedar Senghor. I’m a big fan of Melvin Dixon’s poetry, but his translations seem stilted, and intro, dated. But what a great object to have on hand in Dakar! With Eshelman’s Cesaire translations, we’ve got a good intro to Negritude in English.
Slumberland, Paul Beatty. DJ Darky has created a perfect beat (Think Pootie Tang crossed with a DJ Spooky satire) and is in Berlin to track down an unknown US African American jazz genius whose work he’s discovered as the sound track to porn films. It gets wilder and funnier. A couple of plot gimmicks – spies and fortune tellers – are Beatty’s nod to prose, but his whiplash wit kept me spinning throughout this joke de force.
Tropic Moon, Georges Simenon. The first of Simenon’s nouvelles dur (hard novels, i.e. not Maigret), this is a young man’s descent into lust/love/madness as metaphor in colonial Benin, 1932. Norman Rush, a totally brilliant, required reading, novelist has written a super intro for this new edition.
God’s Bits of Wood, Sembene Ousmane. Ousmane, the great Senegalese film director (required viewing), was a writer long before, and this kaleidoscopic novel of the 1948 Dakar-Bamako train strike against the French overseers is simply great history, great writing. Finished this novel today while working on the Ted Joans section of the Timbuktu shoot, came across the phrase “fine warm sand” and was struck down – it’s a phrase from the totally inspiring letter that Ted’s widow, Laura Corsiglia, sent me right before I left for the Griot Trail! Words I had selected for tomorrow’s blog. (BTW, God’s bits of wood are the native population of West Africa.) Incredibly powerful novel, which Breyten Breytenbach recommended.
The Koran, Allah. The copy given to me, Mohammed Bob, at the Senegal-Gambia border, is hardcover, gilt-embossed, and called The Noble Qur’an. Unlike the first time I read it, when I thought it harsh and finger-pointing, the book seems quite lyrical this time through. I can see how Rumi got so revved up by it. To understand Islam, read the Koran.

Ron Paul is losing the GOP presidential nominating contest because he does not support a federal constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage, Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), has suggested.
In congratulating Mitt Romney for winning the Nevada caucuses on Saturday, Brown noted that the former Massachusetts governor has signed the group's anti-gay marriage pledge and Paul has not.
“NOM congratulates Mitt Romney on another impressive victory in the Nevada caucuses, just days after his big win in Florida,” Brown said in a statement. “Governor Romney, who has signed NOM's Marriage Pledge, has now won contests in three different regions of the country and has clearly established himself as the leading candidate.”
Candidates who sign NOM's 5-point pledge promise to support a federal constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in court, appoint judges and an attorney general who will “respect the original meaning of the Constitution,” appoint a presidential commission to investigate the “harassment of traditional marriage supporters,” and back legislation that would allow a ballot question on the issue for voters of the District of Columbia.
While the 76-year-old Paul has said he is personally opposed to gay marriage, he has also called on the government to “butt out” of the marriage business.
“I want the government out. If you're going to have government under the constitution, the states have a lot more authority than the federal government has to define it. I'd rather see it be outside of government and then we would not be arguing about this,” he told the Des Moines Register's editorial board.
“Only Ron Paul, who has said that civil marriage should be abolished all together, has refused [to sign NOM's pledge],” the group added. “Paul is the only candidate who has failed to win a single primary or caucus. Rick Santorum won in Iowa while Newt Gingrich won in South Carolina.”

President Barack Obama on Sunday sought to reassure Americans over the threat posed by Iran, saying the United States was working “in lockstep” with Israel to bring Tehran to heel over its suspect nuclear program.
Obama said the Islamic republic was “feeling the pinch” of ever tougher sanctions imposed by the international community, and dismissed concerns that Tehran could retaliate by striking US soil, saying such a strike was unlikely.
“I’ve been very clear — we’re going to do everything we can to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and creating a nuclear arms race in a volatile region,” Obama said in a live pre-Super Bowl interview with NBC.
“We have mobilized the international community, in a way that is unprecedented. They are feeling the pinch. They are feeling the pressure,” he said.
“My number one priority continues to be the security of the United States. But also, the security of Israel. And we’re going to make sure that we work in lockstep, as we proceed to try to solve this — hopefully diplomatically.”
When asked if he believed the Jewish state would launch a pre-emptive strike on Iran’s nuclear installations, Obama replied: “I don’t think Israel has made a decision.”
Asked if Washington would be consulted first, he said he couldn’t go into specifics but added that the two allies had “closer intelligence and military consultations” than ever before.
On whether Iran could possibly strike US targets in retaliation, Obama said: “We don’t see any evidence they have those intentions or capabilities.”
He added: “Again, our goal is to resolve this diplomatically. That would be preferable. We’re not going to take options off the table, though.”
The US president cautioned that “any kind of additional military activity inside the Gulf is disruptive. And has a big effect on us. It can affect oil prices.”
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman was due in Washington on Monday, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will visit the United States in early March, though a meeting between Netanyahu and Obama was not yet confirmed.
Iran maintains that its nuclear program is for strictly peaceful purposes.
