Sen. Barack Obama took the lead in the race for superdelegates on the eve of a contest that's expected to fall easily into Sen. Hillary Clinton's column.
Rep. Tom Allen of Maine, Dolly Strazar of Hawaii, Sen. Daniel Akaka of Hawaii and Keith Roark of Idaho all endorsed Obama Monday, giving him a lead of four superdelegates for the time being.
Obama and Clinton face off Tuesday in West Virginia, where polls show Clinton ahead by more than a 40-point margin.
Under pressure from some to withdraw from the race, Clinton insists that West Virginina, where only 28 delegates are at stake, is a key state in the fight for the White House.
She said again Monday that no Democratic candidate since 1916 has gone on to win the White House without first winning West Virginia.
"West Virginia is making a decision that has far-reaching consequences to send a message to people what you expect from your next president," she said at a stop in Clear Fork, West Virginia.
Clinton currently trails Obama across all fronts -- superdelegates, pledged delegates and the popular vote, according to CNN's latest estimates.
Obama leads in the race for superdelegates, 277 to Clinton's 273, and he's ahead in the overall delegate count, 1,869 to 1,697.
At the beginning of the year, Clinton led the superdelegate race by more than 100.
Clinton has vowed to stay in the race until someone gets enough delegates to clinch the nomination.
The focus of the Democratic race has largely turned to the superdelegates because they outnumber the remaining pledged delegates up for grabs.
Superdelegates are party leaders and officials who will vote for the candidate of their choice at the Democratic convention in August. Some have already committed to vote for a particular candidate and some have not.
Clinton's campaign says she would be more electable in a general election because she has done well in swing states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, as well as Florida and Michigan, which were stripped of their delegates.
West Virginia is also a key swing state. Bill Clinton won in 1992 and 1996, and George Bush carried it in 2000 and 2004.
Obama spoke in Charleston, West Virginia, on Monday, sounding patriotic themes and saying he expected Clinton to win on Tuesday.
"But when it's over, what will unify us as Democrats -- what must unify us as Americans -- is an unyielding commitment to the men and women who've served this nation and an unshakable fidelity to the ideals for which they've risked their lives," Obama said.
Clinton's campaign says if she leads in the popular vote, she should become the Democratic nominee.Sen. Barack Obama took the lead in the race for superdelegates on the eve of a contest... more

"NASA has lost focus and is no longer associated with inspiration," he said. "I don't think our kids are watching the space shuttle launches. It used to be a remarkable thing. It doesn't even pass for news anymore."
What utter and complete rubbish.
NASA is hard at work researching and designing the next space vehicles to carry man to the Moon, and to Mars (Project Contellation, the Ares Launch Vehicles). We've got two rovers on Mars that STILL WORK after TWO YEARS. We're thinking moon bases, Mars trips! Kids in 6th grade now will be our first moon colonists!
Space may not be all glamour and glitz after we've done the moon thing, but our planet is not in good shape, the way we live. Space exploration teaches us about Biology, Engineering, Astronomy, Economics and much much more! What are we supposed to give young bright eyed students to dream about? Every science has interest in space in some way. Medicine is more effective if created in a micro-gravity environment. Plants grow in different ways, same a crystals. If we don't encourage exploration beyond our world sure we'll have plenty to focus on here...but when we look up at the stars at night does he really think we'll stop caring?
I once heard of a teacher that asked her students "What do you want to be when you grow up? I hope you've all grown out of the 'I want to be an astronaut' phase." I wanted to vomit. Space Exploration is vital to our growth as a human race, pushing the boundaries of exploration and scientific discovery. If we stop, we stagnate.
We've got focus, Mr. Obama. You've had my vote up to this point...and for the first time since realizing you were the right choice for me...I'm second guessing."NASA has lost focus and is no longer associated with inspiration," he said.... more

Obama does not endorse legalization, but he does pledge to leave states to decide their own policy on medical marijuana and to not federally prosecute doctors and patients. Many states currently allow medicinal marijuana, but often those who have certified proscriptions or permits for growing, are still arrested by federal agents. It seems more important to focus our resources on real issues rather than on stopping old ladies who find solace for their glaucoma in THC.Obama does not endorse legalization, but he does pledge to leave states to decide... more

Ok, I'm a little confused. I know that Hillary is the underdog now, but didn't Kennedy win the 1960 election. Now unless my little crystal ball is wrong, I think Senator Clinton is behind in every statistical category as of today. But hey I could be wrong; the 1960 election was a controversial one. Something about votes that came up missing....hmmmm, what are you planning Mrs. Clinton?
One of my favorite quotes from the article:
"It was West Virginia that made it possible for John Kennedy to become president," Clinton told 400 supporters at a local high school. "John Kennedy didn't have the number of delegates he needed when he went to the convention in 1960; he had something equally as important -- he had West Virginia behind him."
(West Virginia is equally as important as having more delegates overall? Really?)
And another, where her surrogates try's to compare the OBama people to Bush:
"We've already had one unfortunate experience with a leader declaring 'mission accomplished' when it really wasn't," Garin said, referring to the now infamous sign that greeted Bush aboard the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln following the fall of Baghdad in 2003."

It seems similarities between Barack Obama and Matt Santos (the character played by Jimmy Smitts on The West Wing) are not coincidental. The writers say the character was based on Obama, then a relatively unknown senatorial candidate, but it now seems to be Obama who is following in the footsteps of the fictional presidential candidate. Like Obama, Santos was a young charismatic politician from an ethnic minority aiming to rise above race, up against a not-so-conservative Republican. Only time will tell how reality measures up to Aaron Sorkin’s utopian vision of America. It seems similarities between Barack Obama and Matt Santos (the character played by... more

Obama supporters and filmmakers alike, submitted many many of their self-made ads to the Obama in 30 Seconds ad contest. The ads were voted on by the general public and selected by a celebrity-clad panel for national airtime as one of Obama's new campaign commericals.
"Obamacan" came out as the overall winner with other ads winning in People's Choice and Funniest Ad ("It Could Happen to You" was hilarious).
I personally was filmed in one of the finalist ads ("Spell Change") and have watched most if not all the entries, and they are pretty badass.

Sen. Barack Obama has tied Sen. Hillary Clinton in the race for superdelegates, according to CNN's latest count.
Obama picked up an endorsement from California superdelegate Crystal Strait, a Young Democrats of America board member and a former California Young Democrats president.
"It's probably the hardest decision I've made in my life," Strait told CNN.
"I respect both candidates so much. But listening to how young people voted and caucused around the country, I know this was the right decision."
Superdelegates are party leaders and officials who vote for the candidate of their choice at the Democratic convention in August.
At the beginning of the year, Clinton had led the superdelegate race by more than 100.
The focus of the Democratic race has largely turned to the superdelegates because they outnumber the remaining pledged delegates that are up for grabs.
Strait became the 273rd superdelegate in Obama's column, by CNN's count. Clinton had 273 Sunday as well -- technically 273.5 because of some Democrats Abroad superdelegates who are given half a vote each. Sen. Barack Obama has tied Sen. Hillary Clinton in the race for superdelegates,... more

Rent control is a good thing. It keeps communities economically diverse. Without it, people who rely on having affordable rent in cities will have to move, extend their commutes to unreasonable distances, possibly lose their jobs and have their families broken up. Without it, landlords will have even more license to screw tenants in the state of California.
The landlords are really hoping you don't bother with this election on June 3. Many people won't: with nothing but these two propositions, a few judicial races and the District Attorney on the ballot (at least that's all that's on my ballot), most registered voters will sit this one out. If the landlords manage a good turnout of their backers, this regressive handout for them could actually become law.
This one's personal for me; if it passes, I'll manage. Others won't be so fortunate. I found a description of what the proposition will do at this website:
http://www.ballotpedia.org/wiki/index.php?title=California_Proposition_98_(2008)
The main provision that concerns me here is #2: "prohibit rent control". I happen to live in a rent control zone. Many friends of mine do too. Many thousands of Angelenos do. Everyone in older buildings in Santa Monica does, and San Francisco, and lots of other places.
Please, please turn out June 3 and vote NO on this garbage. And please, pass this email to your friends in California and urge them to vote no too!
The landlords don't need your help and they don't need mine. Tell them where they can stick this.

"There's a number -- a new number -- that may now be the most important number on Earth: 350. As in parts per million of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
"A few weeks ago, NASA's chief climatologist, James Hansen, submitted a paper to Science magazine with several coauthors. The abstract attached to it argued -- and I have never read stronger language in a scientific paper -- that "if humanity wishes to preserve a planet similar to that on which civilization developed and to which life on Earth is adapted, paleoclimate evidence and ongoing climate change suggest that CO2 will need to be reduced from its current 385 ppm to at most 350 ppm."
(read the article for more)
A new organization, www.350.org is taking the creative approach and asking everyone and their mother to publicize this magic/tragic number. And demand our governments act now to reach it.

Nuclear Leaks and Response Tested Obama in Senate
By MIKE McINTIRE
Published: February 3, 2008
When residents in Illinois voiced outrage two years ago upon learning that the Exelon Corporation had not disclosed radioactive leaks at one of its nuclear plants, the state’s freshman senator, Barack Obama, took up their cause.
Mr. Obama scolded Exelon and federal regulators for inaction and introduced a bill to require all plant owners to notify state and local authorities immediately of even small leaks. He has boasted of it on the campaign trail, telling a crowd in Iowa in December that it was “the only nuclear legislation that I’ve passed.”
“I just did that last year,” he said, to murmurs of approval.
A close look at the path his legislation took tells a very different story. While he initially fought to advance his bill, even holding up a presidential nomination to try to force a hearing on it, Mr. Obama eventually rewrote it to reflect changes sought by Senate Republicans, Exelon and nuclear regulators. The new bill removed language mandating prompt reporting and simply offered guidance to regulators, whom it charged with addressing the issue of unreported leaks.
Those revisions propelled the bill through a crucial committee. But, contrary to Mr. Obama’s comments in Iowa, it ultimately died amid parliamentary wrangling in the full Senate....

Hillary Clinton was back in her macho mode last week.
Campaigning down to the wire in the state of Pennsylvania, she rolled out a television advertisement filled with visceral images that could only have been intended to give Americans the willies.
Stock Market Crashes! Pearl Harbor Bombed! Khrushchev and Castro grinning atop Lenin's tomb!
Then, for just a few frames, there he was - the bogeyman of Waziristan - marking the first time a Democratic candidate has used Osama Bin Laden to attack another Democrat.
The ad was designed to underscore Hillary's toughness. It featured the famous quote from President Harry Truman: "If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen."
It was meant to lodge in voters' minds the idea that Clinton is more able to make hard decisions and stand up to criticism than her younger rival, Barack Obama, who presumably cannot stand a hot kitchen, or will not stand up to Bin Laden, the communists, or Emperor Hirohito, or something.
Bitter or obliteration?Hillary Clinton was back in her macho mode last week.

Sen. Chris Dodd on Sunday joined the chorus of Democratic leaders downplaying the idea of a joint ticket between Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
"These are two great candidates who fought very hard, but my sense is today that that probably won't be the ticket," Dodd said on NBC's "Meet The Press."
Dodd, who abandoned his presidential bid on January 3, said he thinks it's "very clear" Obama will be his party's nominee.

Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign rejected suggestions Sunday that Sen. Hillary Clinton is staying in the race in hopes of brokering some kind of agreement with the likely nominee.
"I don't believe that Senator Clinton is looking for a deal," Obama's chief campaign strategist David Axelrod told "Fox News Sunday," when asked about suggestions she may want the Obama campaign's help retiring her campaign debt.
"I don't think that's what this is about," he said.

Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential hopeful, has pulled ahead of his rival in superdelegate endorsements for the first time, bringing him ever closer to the Democratic presidential nomination.
He had picked up nine new endorsements by Saturday, including two superdelegates from the Virgin Islands who had previously backed Hillary Clinton.
Two others superdelegates from Ohio and Utah also declared their support for Obama.
Kevin Rodriquez, a Virgin Islands superdelegate, said he switched from Clinton to Obama because he believed Obama had brought energy and excitement to the party.Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential hopeful, has pulled ahead of his rival in... more
