One clever designer has taken a large group of famous brand logos and simplified them using only circles. From the list it is not hard to spot Red Bull and Apple among the groups. Though a few take a few guesses till the correct answer is made.
Luckily on the Flickr page the logos are titled, however many remain titled ?? leaving you spending too much time wondering.
"Unevolving a logo to just a series of coloured circles, how many can still be recognised? This study shows how the most simplest of logo and brand designs are often the most recognisable when shed of all detail.
In most cases, each circle represents one letter or one container. So in the case of Orange, a self contained logo, one circle for the orange container and one circle for the wording. Typebased logos like Twitter, FedEx and eBay just have one circle per letter.
It's an ongoing study, so new logos and brands will be added."-Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/grahamsblog/sets/72157625155090078/One clever designer has taken a large group of famous brand logos and simplified them... more

A row has broken out between Wikipedia and the FBI over the use of its seal.
In a letter sent to Wikipedia's San Francisco office, the FBI said that "unauthorised reproduction of the FBI Seal was prohibited by US law".
"Whoever possesses any insignia...or any colourable imitation thereof..shall be fined...or imprisoned... or both," the FBI wrote.
However, Wikipedia denied that it had done anything wrong and said that FBI lawyers had "misquoted the law".
The issue centred on the FBI's Wikipedia entry which, in addition to information on the US bureau, also features an image of the "Seal of the Federal Bureau of Investigation".
The image can be viewed in four different resolutions, including a high-resolution 2000px version.

A non-eligible candidate IITian Udayakumar Dharmalingam was unfairly short listed as one of the top five finalists in the contest for the selection of the Indian Rupee Symbol and later on declared as winner.
But RTI ( Right To Information) had already exposed that he is Non-eligible candidate for Indian Rupee Symbol Design Competition as he had violated the Indian Rupee Symbol Design competition guidelines .
According to guidelines one candidate could send maximum two design entries but he had submitted a total of four designs.
Second violation of guideline is the symbol itself, as it's not applicable to standard keyboard or Unicode enable.
Violations are not stopping here according to information and broadcasting minister Ambika Soni "The new rupee symbol partially resembles the Devanagri ‘Ra’ and Roman capital ‘R’ without the stem coupled with two parallel lines – in line with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s vision for a symbol which reflects and captures Indian ethos and culture."
But using roman script/English alphabet in designing the New Indian rupee symbol is also a violation of guideline according to the guideline "The symbol had to be in the Indian National Language Script".
But according to National language Script English is not included in that list till this date.A non-eligible candidate IITian Udayakumar Dharmalingam was unfairly short listed as... more

Greenpeace UK is running a Redesign BP’s Logo Contest that is asking people around the world to rebrand BP logo . Many of these results are, not surprisingly, quite clever and witty. They’re already approaching 700 entries, all of which can be seen on their Flickr page. Few of my favorites here:

Tobacco companies are upset with the Australian Government after legislation proposes a ban on packaging branding for cigarettes. The move will mean Australia will have logo-free packaging that removes 'logos, promotional text or colourful images on cigarette packages'.
The rules will be in place on 1st July 2012, along with a tax rise on cigarettes by 25%.
The main reactions against the plans are from retailers who fear it'll hurt businesses and the Tobacco companies who plan to take the law to court.Tobacco companies are upset with the Australian Government after legislation proposes... more

Oh the irony:
"Today news broke that a private Swedish company, noticing that the logo had no commercial protection, took the opportunity to hijack it. The outfit, Sandryds Handel AB, have officially registered the emblem as their own with the authorities, with the intention of commercially exploiting it.
The case raises the delicious prospect of Pirate Bay going to court to defend its intellectual property."
