Scott Lively is also directly connected to the kill-a-gay legislation in Uganda, which would make homosexual activity punishable by a lengthy prison sentence and/or death. Lively is the co-author (with Kevin Abrams) of The Pink Swastika, which poses the notion that homosexuals are the true inventors of Nazism, a preposterous position that Jonathan Zimmerman, a historian at New York University, states is a “flat-out lie.”

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren has released an "It Gets Better" video, drawing upon her experience as a schoolteacher to reassure LGBT youth who may be getting bullied that their lives will improve when they get older.
"I'm Elizabeth Warren, and you may be wondering what I have to say to you," she says in the video, which debuted on Wednesday. "After all, I haven't lived your life. But when I graduated from college, I was a schoolteacher, and I watched what happens in hallways, on sidewalks, out in the schoolyard. I watched kids who pushed, who bullied. I saw how much pain some kids could inflict on other kids."
Warren tells struggling young people who may need help to call the Trevor Project, a national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services for LGBT youth.
"Because here's what you'll find," she says. "There are a lot of different people out there in this world, and a lot of people who celebrate those differences. That's what makes us strong. That's what makes us exciting. So, hang in there. It gets better."

'And this is what bullies do. They are cowards. Cowards who only pick on people who they think can't or won't fight back. What are they fighting for? They are ideological nihilists who believe in nothing and can flip-flop on a moments notice because they only thing they believe in is reinforcing the inequality that impoverishes the many so that a few may feast. They want to keep us distracted and fighting amongst ourselves so the banksters and the special interests can rob us all blind. They know they can't sell a lower standard of living to working class Americans when they are trying to sell them more tax cuts for the rich at the same time, so they'd rather bash gay people or complain about black people on welfare, but when I call them out on it then they are suddenly oh so very sensitive, yes indeed, oh so hurt and fragile, how could I be so mean?

Most days, Katie Goldman’s life is like any other 8-year-old's. But every so often, there's a reminder of the time one year ago, when schoolyard teasing made her a Star Wars celebrity, when she became a symbol of geeks done wrong - and how to make things right.
Sometimes the reminders are simple, like when a new girl showed up in class, spied Katie’s Star Wars backpack and water bottle, and within days, felt comfortable enough to show her own nerd pride.
Sometimes, it's heart-tugging, like at GeekGirlCon, when a brigade of Storm Troopers formed an honor guard, a line of protection - for Katie.
And sometimes, it's huge, like today: Wear Star Wars, Share Star Wars Day, a celebration of geekdom and giving that was inspired by Katie's story.
Last year, Katie wanted to hide away her Star War wear after her classmates teased that Star Wars was just for boys. Her mother, heartbroken for her daughter, blogged about the experience. It flew across blogs, social media and news sites, along with the Twitter hashtag #maytheforcebewithkatie. The grown-up geek community knew Katie's pain, and responded with thousands of supportive comments, plus donations of toys, clothes and books, many of which went to students at Katie’s school.
It became Wear Star Wars, Share Star Wars Day, and this year, thousands on Facebook promised to show off their Star Wars fandom and donate merchandise for kids. At Katie’s school in Illinois, they call it Proud To Be Me Day, and kids are encouraged to show off what they love and what makes them unique.
"But some things are permanently different," said Carrie Goldman, Katie's mom.
Katie's entire school has embraced anti-bullying techniques that involve teaching kids to respect what makes everyone different, to understand that kids who bully others can also be victims.
Just as Katie has learned to defend girls who like Star Wars, she defended a boy at a birthday party who said he wanted his nails painted like the girls there.
“[Katie has] internalized how completely OK it is to do what you want to do,” Goldman said.
It’s changed life for her mom, too. Last year, when Goldman first shared Katie’s story on her blog, Portrait of an Adoption, it mostly served a small adoption community. Thousands of page views and comments later, she said, the audience has grown.
That means Goldman is more careful when sharing stories about her kids, although she still shows updates of Katie in her Princess Leia costume, or her homemade R2-D2 cake.
“She’s a self-conscious girl. People will approach her and say, ‘Are you Star Wars Katie?’ and she gets shy,” Goldman said. “I ask myself before every story I write, ‘How will Katie feel about this one day?’ I think that’s good and healthy.”
Goldman now writes more about broader parenting and adoption issues, and is writing a book about bullying. It's based on research and interviews, Goldman said, but includes the story of Katie, the wise ways her school reacted and the tremendous ways the Star Wars community responded. “Bullied: What Every Parent, Teacher, and Kid Needs to Know About Ending the Cycle of Fear” will be published next summer by Harper Collins.
And even a year after Katie's story hit the Internet, the Goldmans stay in touch with the geek girls who first shared the story and encouraged Katie's Star Wars fandom. Katie got the message – “loud and clear,” Goldman said – that she's safe to pursue what inspires and excites her.
“I know, every now and then, I’ll get a note of support,” Goldman said. “ ‘How’s Katie doing? We’re still thinking of her.’ ”
And that old backpack of Katie's? It's frayed, cracked and falling apart, but Katie carries it to school every single day.

Father who set up anti-gay-bullying campaign after son's suicide found dead
Roger Crouch's 15-year-old son Dominic leapt off a roof amid rumours he was gay after apparently kissing a boy for a dare

A father who campaigned against homophobic bullying after his son killed himself amid rumours that he was gay has been found dead.
Earlier this month Roger Crouch, 55, who launched a Facebook campaign after 15-year-old Dominic leapt off a roof after apparently kissing a boy for a dare, was named "hero of the year" by the lesbian, gay and bisexual charity Stonewall, beating the likes of Lady Gaga and Joan Armatrading.
He was pronounced dead after Gloucestershire police went to his home in Gretton, near Cheltenham, on Monday following "concerns for the welfare of a man at the address".
A police spokesperson said on Thursday that they were not treating his death as suspicious and that the coroner had been informed.
Crouch, who was clerk of Stow-on-the-Wold town council in the Cotswolds, was also a patron for Diversity Role Models, a charity campaigning against homophobic bullying. He lobbied schools to ensure anti-bullying policies are used and argued young people should be taught coping strategies, and visited the House of Commons to tell MPs what they could do about bullying.
Crouch's wife, Paola, wrote of her and daughter Giulia's heartbreak on the Facebook group she and Crouch created. She posted: "The changes you have started for young people everywhere, the work you have done against bullying, will remain as a towering monument to you."
Dominic leapt from the roof of a six-storey building near his private school, St Edwards in Cheltenham, in May last year. The inquest into his death heard that there had been rumours he might be gay after he was said to have kissed a boy during a spin-the-bottle game.
The inquest recorded a verdict of suicide, and his son's death prompted Crouch to begin his campaign against bullying.
Crouch said at the time: "It is clear that the banter and rumours were based on Dom's alleged sexuality. Some maintain that mystery still surrounds Dominic's death. There's no real mystery around why Dom was driven to take his own life.
"He was desperate that his happiness after the residential trip was punctured by rumours and being the butt of jokes. Over a single morning he felt he went from hero to zero. The real tragedy is not just that he died. It's that his death was preventable."
After receiving the Stonewall award last month, Crouch said: "I see this as an award for Dom. By choosing us for this award you've also chosen to take a stand alongside all the young people whose lives have been ended by bullying.
"We are parents who loved our son. We stood by him in life and we stand by him in death."
.
A spokesman for Stonewall said: "His tireless campaigning against bullying following the death of his son was an inspiration."
Joanne Dunning, of the Lesbian and Gay Foundation, said: "It seemed like he was only just getting the recognition he deserved for his anti-bullying work."

A shocking video of a gay student being beaten at Union-Scioto High School in Chillicothe, Ohio, has surfaced reports Channel 6 WSYX news.
In the clip, which was filmed on a cell phone and then posted to Facebook, the attacker, who has not been named, can be seen waiting for the gay student, who wishes to remain anonymous, in a classroom.
Once the student arrives, the bully begins severely beating "the holy living crap out of him," says his mother.
Even though the boy tried to get away and asked "Why are you doing this?" the attack continued.
WSYX reports the student received a possible concussion and a chipped tooth.
The student also says that the perpetrator wrote "Check out the definition of a faggot" on his Facebook page two days earlier.
The attacker received three days suspension, but the mother of the gay student says that is not good enough and she is going to file charges.
She added, "For all those people that have hate in their hearts, they need to let it go because people are going to be who they are."
Anti-LGBT bullying is, sadly, not a new phenomenon and despite a very public outcry in recent months, it continues to rear it tragic, ugly head.
In recent weeks two students, Jamey Rodemeyer and Jamie Hubley, both committed suicide after being subjected to bullying because of their sexuality.
Towleroad adds:
"An anti-bullying bill is pending in Ohio's legislature. Ohio House Bill 208 would add sexual orientation, gender identity, and other enumerated protections to Ohio’s anti-bullying law without changing the general prohibition against any bullying or harassment. Proponents of the bill are seeking testimony in the House Education Committee, according to Equality Ohio, but the bill has not been a priority of the committee."A shocking video of a gay student being beaten at Union-Scioto High School in... more

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mitchell Gold, founder of Faith in America, was honored Wednesday during a reception co-sponsored by both U.S. senators from North Carolina, the Honorable Sen. Kay Hagan and the Honorable Richard Burr, for his work to educate the public about the harm caused to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth.
The event paralleled this week's launch of Gold’s new paperbook book "Youth in Crisis: What Everyone Should Know About Growing Up Gay." Gold in 2008 published “CRISIS: 40 Stories Revealing The Personal, Social, and Religious Pain and Trauma of Growing up Gay in America.” He has called the book, which was co-produced with Mindy Drucker, his sister-in-law, one of the most rewarding advocacy projects he has ever undertaken.
Since 2008, Gold has appeared in more than 300 television, newspaper and radio interviews and public forums all across the country to discuss the harm caused to gay youth and families when misguided religious teaching is used to place a moral, religious and legal stamp of disapproval on their very being.

I have been crying all day about this.
Poor Jamey Rodemeyer, a beautiful boy of 14 who killed himself because of relentless bullying. He actually participated in the "It gets better" program.
He died for no reason other than he was gay.
This is not innate behaviour. This is learned. I don't mean being homosexual. I mean hating. And bullying.
I'm not a big fan of Lady Gaga, but this is an awesome tribute she did for Jamey, who quoted one of her songs in his suicide note. She seems sincere. And she has the muscle to make a difference.
Not to be corny, but I have been thinking of a William Shakespeare line all day:
"Goodnight, sweet prince; And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest." -- Horatio
It WILL get better, Jamey.

I’m sad to say that HCC seems to continue having issues with ensuring that transgender students are welcomed and that they have equal access to a supportive learning environment. I recently learned of a situation in which a HCC instructor named Donny Leveston, who prior to working at HCC was a truck driver and Drill Sargent, organized a classroom discussion in which transgender people were referred to as “weirdoes” and “freaks”. Leveston wound up his presentation by stating “I don’t care what those people do as long as they keep it away from me.” What seemed particularly cruel about this instructor-lead discussion was that the Leveston was aware that he had a transitioning student in the classroom.I’m sad to say that HCC seems to continue having issues with ensuring that... more

Increasingly irrelevant Republican presidential candidate/human punchline Michele Bachmann just can’t get a break. Nor does she deserve one. A trip to California over the weekend saw the bigoted Christianist Congresswoman from Minnesota’s 6th congressional district the target of a flash mob who danced to Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” to protest her (more or less) “pro-bullying” stance (it’s what Jesus would want) and anti-LGBT words, deeds and activities as a private citizen, as a state legislator, and as a member of the US Congress since 2007.
Even Jay Leno piled on when she appeared on the Tonight Show and good for him. This woman and her kind need to be rebuked in no uncertain terms by right-thinking people in this country.
Even in normally ultra-conservative Orange County, Bachmann got the business. I guess the new OC is quite a bit different that the old OC.
