What does it take to have a green home remodeling? What are the basics of making and building sustainable homes? Susan Davis from Specitrum Fine Homes gives us some hints on how to have a sustainable home on the cheap and while saving money! It's just a reminder that going green can actually save you money while creating a healthier life for you and your family. It's simply amazing how it's a win win situation!
Some of her ideas for a green home remodeling are:
- Have a home energy audit, also known as home performance audit, you can even get it for free through your city or through your energy company. Worst case you pay someone to come by, and even then you'll end up saving money by finding out what holes you need to patch or windows you might need to change.
- Another option is to have a thermal image report to see exactly where heat is leaking or air cold is getting in!
- If you're interested in having solar energy in your home, definitely make sure to have a home energy audit before installing it, you won't believe how much money you could save just by closing up holes. Not only that, you'll need a much smaller solar power and you'll end up saving money there too!
- Read the labels, find out exactly what kind of furniture you're putting inside your home, your carpet, paint, and even cleaning products can be very toxic and could be harming your health.
Here are the kinds of services they offer, in between others: green interior design, green remodeling, green architecture and green construction, home performance audit or thermal image report.More info here: http://www.ecobold.com/green-home-remodeling-spectrum-fine-homes/... more

City Grazing’s goat herd lives on Cargo Way, near Heron’s Head Park in San Francisco.
Landscaping by goat is becoming increasingly popular in urban areas across the nation. Besides being amazing and engaging creatures, goats are much more sustainable and environmentally friendly than a gas-powered lawn mower. The animals also provide natural fertilizer, which can help to restore degraded earth and natural soil organisms. How can you keep your food fresh and your drinking water cool in a hot third world country? The pot-fridge is the latest in a range of savvy inventions for the poor in the developing world. An idea revived by NGOs working in Africa, this nifty invention is now being used by farmers and their families in warm climates to preserve their food and keep the insects away. This desert cooler does not require electricity or any power source, apparently making it ideal for poor rural villages and sustainable living fans. According to the NGOs, a pot-fridge will keep your tomatoes fresh for almost three weeks and all it takes is some sand, water and two pots. Is it time to give up on ‘white goods’ and get earthy? The programme shows us how to make one.How can you keep your food fresh and your drinking water cool in a hot third world... more

Even though I'm not a mom, I definitely appreciate Zoli's products. Take for example a research done by the Environmental Working Group found that newborns umbilical cord blood has an average of 287 different chemicals, in which:
- 180 cause cancer in humans or animals
- 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system
- 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests.
A few years ago we were putting fire retardant chemicals on our pajamas, we had to go and prove that it caused more harm than good. Now we must prove that such chemicals should stay away from our furniture, linens, paint and products that we put on our bodies. So, thank goodness we have companies such as ZoLi who shares the same vision as ours and are able to produce better products!

Bleach cremes, skin softeners and skin softeners contain hazardous chemicals. Manufacturing process add environmental pollution while the chemicals pollute our environment and water level inside earth. We are offering alternatives to these creams. Our home remedies are very environmentally friendly and safe while keeping our world green.
* Oranges are available easily and we use them frequently. Get some orange peels. Dry them in sunlight. When they are dry (make sure they are fully dry) grind them well so that it becomes powder. Now add some milk to it and make a nice paste. You can rinse it after 15 minutes with lukewarm water. It is an excellent remedy to cleanse your skin and whitens your skin as well. Can be used regularly on daily basis.
* Gram flour is considered good for skin whitening. It has a whitening agent in it. Make paste with two spoons of gram flour, a little lemon, milk cream and a pinch of turmeric powder. This paste can be used all over the body.

Like Miami during Art Basel or Milan during Fashion Week, the town of Reims, France was buzzing with activity during its most important two weeks of the year—the vendange, or grape harvest. Last year Veuve Clicquot invited us to Reims to learn what happens before the vendange (check out our CH video); this year they invited us back (along with our friends from Notcot, Yatzer, Frizzi Frizzi, and Materialiste) to help with the harvest itself.
You probably already know that the method for making Champagne is used around the world, but only sparkling wine made from three varieties of grapes (pinot noir, chardonnary and pinot meunier) grown in France’s Champagne region can be called Champagne. Efforts are being taken to certify the area as a UNESCO-protected region (Saint-Émillion and the Loire Valley are also certified), which will further enhance the cultural, physical and commercial roles the region plays.
Our trip included visits to many of Veuve Clicquot’s facilities and vineyards, including its beautifully renovated Hótel du Marc, (below). The 1840 manor has been part of Veuve Clicquot’s heritage for more than a hundred years, and is among the first of its age to be completely overhauled with 21st century environmentally-friendly systems. We also toured the cellars and a pressing center.
On a perfect Sunday morning we woke up early and headed to the Manoir de Verzy, which overlooks one of the more than 400 vineyards owned by Veuve Clicquot. This grand cru vineyard is where grapes for La Grande Dame are grown. After picking the grapes we went to the nearby pressing center, where we watched our grapes be pressed. The juice of grapes from each variety and field is stored separately in steel vats, where it goes through its first round of (malolactic) fermentation.
Chick on the link for more of the story.

This winter, New Year's Eve revelers will have a close-up view of Times Square's first environmentally friendly billboard powered entirely by wind and sun.
But the billboard might not be quite as dazzling as some of its high-powered neighbors along the Great White Way.
Construction on the 35,000-pound sign advertising Ricoh Americas Corp. is to begin this month across the avenue from the building where the ball drops on New Year's Eve.
Powered by 16 wind turbines and 64 solar panels, the sign is expected to save $12,000 to $15,000 per month in electricity costs. Ricoh, an office equipment and document storage supplier, estimates the sign will also keep 18 tons of carbon out of the environment.
The billboard will be lit by floodlights rather than light-emitting diodes. It won't have a backup generator, so it could go dark during a long period with little wind or sun.
But Ricoh spokesman Ron Potesky said the sign's turbines will probably be able to keep the billboard lit even after four days without breezes or bright sun.
"The point is that there are ways of being environmentally friendly to the planet, even on a billboard," Potesky said.
A lighting ceremony for the 126-foot wide, 47-foot tall sign is scheduled for Dec. 4.This winter, New Year's Eve revelers will have a close-up view of Times... more

The glass of the future will be made from renewable materials such as sugars, fatty acids and alcohols thanks to a discovery made by scientists in Germany.
The research team have discovered an enzyme in a strain of bacteria that can dramatically improve the production process of acrylic glass - otherwise known as Plexiglas® or Perspex®. The new process eliminates the need for petrochemicals and replaces them with cheap renewable substances.
Traditional glass production processes come at a huge cost to the environment, producing 185kg of CO2 for every tonne of glass made. The industry alone is estimated to pump out more that half a million tonnes of CO2 a year. The production of acrylic glass is no better - It takes 2 kilos of petroleum to create just 1 kilogram of acrylic glass.
Despite its dirty production acrylic glass is already a low cost, light weight and UV resistant alternative to glass. You'll find it on your car's brake lights, Led Zeppelin's drum kit or at hockey games when players get slammed up against the safety glass.
The discovery of the new enzyme by the teams at University of Duisburg-Essen and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research will shift the process from a resource hogging chemical production to a cleaner biotechnological procedure that can create the ingredients for acrylic glass from natural products such as fatty acids and sugars.
Does this mean that the glass of the future will be tasty too? It may give new meaning to the saying 'don't lick the glass'.
