Locust swarm of biblical proportions strikes Egypt, Israel before Passover
Three weeks before Passover, a plague of locusts is swarming from Egypt to Israel, sparking fears among farmers in the region.
The timing of the insect invasion is eerie, because the Bible's Book of Exodus tells of 10 plagues that hit Egypt before Moses and the Jews were allowed to leave for the Promised Land. A plague of locusts was the eighth on the list — but Pharaoh didn't relent until the 10th plague, which killed off all of Egypt's firstborn sons. Every year at Passover, Jews commemorate how they were spared.
This time, even the Israelis are worried that the locusts are out to get them. "They may not have ruined Pharaoh, but they could ruin us," one farmer, Tzachi Rimon, told Israel's Channel 10 TV.
Locust swarms have the potential to wipe out agricultural crops, and it's been eight years since such a serious assault has hit Egypt's Cairo region and Israel, said Keith Cressman, the senior locust forecasting officer at the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization's headquarters in Rome.
"They came from the Sudan-Egypt border after breeding in December and January, flew north along the coast to nearly Suez, then got caught in some winds associated with a low-pressure system over the central Mediterranean to Cairo," Cressman told NBC News in an email. The weather system moved eastward, and on Monday, changing winds carried the swarm to the northern Sinai Peninsula and Israel's Negev Desert, he said.
A spokeswoman for Israel's Agriculture Ministry, Dafna Yurista, told The Associated Press that planes have gone out to spray pesticides on agricultural fields, to head off damage by a relatively small swarm of 2,000 locusts. Authorities called upon residents to be vigilant in reporting locust sightings.
Egypt's Ahram Online reported Sunday that locust swarms were attacking agricultural land in Suez, but other reports quoted Egyptian authorities as saying that the bugs were being "eradicated" and that no significant damage was being done to crops.
Cressman said the locusts of the Middle East don't follow the predictable kind of cycle that dictates the rise and fall of cicada swarms. "Outbreaks depend on rains in the desert, which are infrequent and irregular," he explained.
Photos of the locusts involved in the current outbreak suggest that these particular insects are "old and tired rather than young and hungry," Cressman said. If that's the case, this week's plague "will probably come to nothing," he said.
"However, there are other swarms that have moved from northeast Sudan and southeast Egypt to the Nile Valley in north Sudan, where they quickly matured and started laying eggs last week in winter crops," Cressman said. The eggs are expected to hatch in about a week, producing wingless nymphs that would become adult locusts in about six weeks. Those swarms could move into central Sudan and get a breeding boost from the summer rains that traditionally fall between June and September.
"Hence, there is good potential for locust infestations to increase," Cressman said. "If so, at the end of summer and late autumn, summer-bred swarms could move to the Red Sea coast of Sudan, Egypt, Eritrea and Saudi Arabia. I may be off very shortly to Khartoum [in Sudan] to discuss these implications with the government."

The right believes it’s because we have displeased God. The left believes it’s either because of politics (the demise of U.S. as a world power, Iranian nukes) or economics (scarcity of water and oil) or science (climate disruption) or some combination of the three. And those who don’t keep up with current events or science can still believe in doomsday because of the Mayan calendar or because the polarity of the earth could switch at any minute.
We’ve always had those who believed in the end of times. In the year 1000 A.D., thousands of people in England gave away all their possessions and assembled on hilltops to await Jesus’s return. And there’s no end of cults who have predicted the end of the world. But for the most part, doomsday beliefs were held by a small and not very sophisticated fringe. Today, if you believe the TV show Doomsday Preppers, then belief in a massive and catastrophic collapse of our way of life is an all time high. And many doomsday believers are both intelligent and thoughtful.
Which begs the question, “Why?” Why do so many believe things are so bad? And why now?The right believes it’s because we have displeased God. The left believes... more

Bible Teacher Confesses He Was Wrong to Predict Christ's Return; Says God Has Not Stopped Saving People
With his speech sounding somewhat slurred and labored, Family Radio Stations Inc. founder and chairman Harold Camping sought to address in a recent message why Christ failed to return on Oct. 21 as the Bible teacher had predicted. Camping confessed, after decades of falsely misleading his followers, that he was wrong and regrets his misdeeds.
In addition to attempting to correct his erroneous teachings on the Rapture and God's day of final judgment on the world, Camping, 90, also confessed, "incidentally," that he was wrong to claim that God had stopped saving people after May 21 – the date which God's so-called "spiritual" judgment had begun.

hat may unfold during late 2011 through 2012.
Calling it a “once in a lifetime super solar storm event,” NASA warns that killer solar flares can slam the Earth knocking out the Northern Hemisphere’s technological infrastructure and kicking everything back to the level of the late 1800s.
Russia too has voiced concern. And now the eminent astrophysicist, Alexey Demetriev claims what is happening is worse—much worse—than what NASA and the ESA have admitted.
Terrified scientists at NASA discovered on July 14, 2010 that our system is passing through an interstellar energy cloud. This highly energized, electrified cloud of gas is disturbing and disrupting the sun. In conjunction with Earth’s weakening and moving magnetic shield, the world is becoming defenseless against massive solar flares and intense radiation.Russia too has voiced concern. Spring is finally here -- but apparently, the apocalypse will be fast on its trail. That's the word from a slight but outspoken group of spiritual devotees who believe that the world as we know it is coming to an end.
Maybe you've already encountered the literature: pamphlets, subway ads, billboards on the side of the highway. "Judgment Day is coming" reads one billboard, which features a man praying in silhouette against a sunset backdrop. These are the works of a peculiar breed of Christian activists who've taken to the road to preach their belief in the fast-approaching End of Days. The self-appointed harbingers are not tied to any particular church -- they claim organized religion has been corrupted by the devil -- but rather to Internet- and radio-based ministries. And their lone mission is to tell anyone and everyone that the end of days is May 21. That's when, they insist, God's true believers will be lifted into heaven and saved, during a biblical event widely referred to as the Rapture.
The finer points of Christian eschatology have long been the subject of dispute (not to mention the inspiration for movies and books, like the blockbuster "Left Behind" series). Though mainstream churches reject the the notion that doomsday can be predicted by any man, fringe scholars continue to work feverishly pinpointing the moment of the final, divine revelation. And one such man -- 89-year-old radio host Harold Camping -- has been at the game for decades.
In the early 90s, Camping published a book titled "1994?," which claimed judgment day would arrive in September of that year. When confronted with such a staggering anti-climax -- the world, after all, kept on spinning -- Camping chose not to be discouraged, but to learn from his mistakes. (He hadn't considered the Book of Jeremiah, he says.) A civil engineer by trade, Camping went back to the drawing board and continued to crunch the numbers, before arriving at the adamant determination that Rapture would come on May 21, 2011. He began to spread the word through his broadcasting network, Family Radio, in 2009, and quickly built up a fervid following.
But what, exactly, is his argument? We've compiled an explainer below with all the information you'll need to prepare for May 21st.
What happens during and after the Rapture?
In a nutshell: The worthy dead will first rise up to heaven, followed shortly thereafter by about 200 million faithful followers saved by God. Those left behind will endure several months of ghastly torment. And what remains of our fair Earth will swiftly careen towards its ultimate destruction -- which will occur in October.
According to one advocate, Brian Haubert, who was interviewed for a recent article published by NPR:
On May 21, "starting in the Pacific Rim at around the 6 p.m. local time hour, in each time zone, there will be a great earthquake, such as has never been in the history of the Earth," he says. The true Christian believers — he hopes he's one of them — will be "raptured": They'll fly upward to heaven. And for the rest?
"It's just the horror of horror stories," he says, "and on top of all that, there's no more salvation at that point. And then the Bible says it will be 153 days later that the entire universe and planet Earth will be destroyed forever."

While the Obama administration celebrates the death of Osama Bin Laden and our military forces are poking around in caves all over Afghanistan looking for members of al-Qaeda, a far more dangerous threat is growing right in our own backyard. Hezbollah has established bases all over Mexico, Central America and South America. Hezbollah is now heavily involved in the drug trade and in trafficking illegal aliens. But do we hear about any of this in the news? No, instead our government and our media are obsessed with al-Qaeda. This is a fundamental mistake. Hezbollah is far more organized and far more dangerous. While the Obama administration celebrates the death of Osama Bin Laden and our... more

If you thought you had less than three perfectly healthy months to live, what would you do? Would you travel? Spend time with loved ones? Appreciate the joy life has given you?
Or would you ditch your kids and grandkids, join strangers in a caravan of RVs and travel the country warning people about the end of the world?
If you're Sheila Jonas, that's exactly what you'd do.
"This is so serious, I can't believe I'm here," says Jonas, who's been on the road since fall. Like her cohorts, she's "in it 'til the end," which she believes is coming in May.
She won't talk about her past because, "There is no other story. ... We are to warn the people. Nothing else matters."
Such faith and concern drove her and nine others, all loyal listeners of the Christian broadcasting ministry Family Radio, to join the radio station's first "Project Caravan" team.
They walked away from work, families and communities in places as far-flung as California, Kansas, Utah and New Jersey. Among them are an electrician, a TV satellite dish installer, a former chef, an international IT consultant and a man who had worked with the developmentally disabled.
They gave away cars, pets, music collections and more to relatives, friends and neighbors. Some items they kicked to the curb. In homes that weren't emptied, clothes are still hanging in closets, and dishes, books and furniture -- including one man's antique collection -- are gathering dust. Unless, of course, they've been claimed by others. If you believe it's all going to be over soon, why would it matter if you close the front door, much less lock it, when you walk away?

Media Matters is once again helping our enlightenment. The featured video helps expose one of the most insidious movements effecting America and the world in modern times. Namely, the radical "fundamentalist" Christian desire that America must lead the march toward the "Christian totalitarianism" of the world, in other words, "A 21st Century Crusades".
As many may expect, Fox News' Glenn Beck is a willing conduit for propagating this movement, which is supported by Beck's brand of his Mormon faith. The posted video is an example of how intellectually (I use the word loosely) invested Beck is in "Christian totalitarianism". Beck has what he calls a documentary, named "Rumors of War". "Rumors of War" supposedly aired on "Insider Extreme" (a Beck "pay to view" site), Jan. 14, 2011, at 8pm, and is his latest "documentary" installment in his argument for Christian world domination or conversely, resistance to Muslim world domination (seemingly Beck's greatest fear).
Rachel Maddow has, from time to time, done several segments on her MSNBC show about religious influences on our politicians. They include interviews with Jeff Sharlet, the author of "The Family". "The Family" is a revealing chronicle of a secretive organization called "The Fellowship". "The Family" has a dormitory for politicians on "C" Street in Washington, D.C.
It seems many, mostly Republican "End Timers", are in our government and are in lock-step with the King of Beckistan.
Included in the "tags" are links to data that supports the idea a 21st Century Crusades is alive and well.Media Matters is once again helping our enlightenment. The featured video helps... more

Some experts see the perfect storm emerging for a dramatic collapse of Western civilization claiming we've reached environmental, economic, and geopolitical tipping points. Clearly, some skills will be far more valuable than others if this societal breakdown occurs. Sorry bankers, lawyers, and accountants, there won't be a need for you in a post-collapse world.
Before we quantify the skill sets that will be viable, it is important to define the severity of a "post-collapse" scenario. When taken as a whole, together these tipping points could potentially converge to create a post-apocalyptic Mad Max-type world for the vast majority of humanity. However, given the advanced technology that we possess today, it is unlikely to ever become quite that primitive ever again. Surely there will be pockets of energy and food independence no matter what possible scenario unfolds, but the vast majority may be left to fend for themselves.
It would take a serious cataclysmic earth event like a super volcano, a meteor impact, major electromagnetic pulse event, or dramatic pole shift to effect the entirety of humanity. Man-made events like nuclear war, environmental damage, or total economic collapse, no matter how devastating, will be somewhat isolated and contained to specific areas and populations. Incidentally, every nation or territory that has experienced these man-made catastrophes has roared back to life in less than one generation. The only example of nuclear survival was in Japan, while the largest recent big economic collapse was the break-up of the Soviet Union. In both cases those countries went through a very tough period, but ultimately they persevered.
For sake of this article, let's assume that some level of devastation is caused by each type of tipping point in the United States. Our ever escalating wars finally reach our shores by way of long-range nuclear missiles, total economic collapse occurs rendering the dollar worthless, and we would likely have less electricity and water than Iraq did after Bush's "shock and awe" campaign. Gasoline and oil supplies would likely be down to a trickle, halting all supply lines of food and other goods to big box stores. Factory farming will be impossible without cheap oil products readily available. The suffering will be dramatic.
The only question will become, how do the citizens react? Both the USSR and early 1950s Japan were far more agrarian, and far less dependent on big box stores than America currently is. American dependence on long supply lines, interconnected yet vulnerable electric grid, and pharmaceutical-based healthcare may lead to a more severe breakdown of society than witnessed in those countries. Although, innovative technology for alternative energy and agriculture practices will play a part in surviving; but they can only help the few with the knowledge, means, and stability to use them. And stability will be in low supply for some time, resulting in only small groups with relative comfort -- those who planned for the worse. However, as an optimist, I believe that after the initial chaos Americans will rediscover solidarity for one-another, much like they did after 9/11, but this time it will be more sustained out of absolute necessity.
Many articles have been written about how to survive the coming collapse, or what is needed to survive, but not many articles have been written about what skills will have value in a post-collapse world. Imagine fulfilling human necessity without consistent fuel or electricity, large-scale food production, or fully-stocked pharmacies and hospitals. The only form of wealth in a collapsed civilization is the knowledge and skills to produce something of human value.
Here are 10 invaluable skills that will likely help you sustain yourself in a hand-made local world:

On Monday night, a "mystery missile" streaked across the sky just off the Southern California coast, and at this point the U.S. military still has no official explanation for it. The "mystery missile" was caught on video by a local television station's helicopter camera, and the images are absolutely stunning. The trail left behind by the missile was visible from the city of Los Angeles, and the helicopter crew that took the video estimated that the missile's location was approximately 35 miles out to sea north of Catalina Island. Many times Christians in America speak of the persecution that is coming someday. But the truth is that intense persecution of Christians is already here. According to a new report from the Pew Research Center, two out of every three people in the world now live in countries where religion is highly restricted. Governments around the globe are regularly killing Christians, torturing Christians and imprisoning Christians in absolutely horrific conditions. But it isn't just governments that are persecuting Christians. Jihadist groups throughout the Islamic world have taken it upon themselves to slaughter those who commit "blasphemy" by preaching the gospel. The truth is that it is a very dangerous time to be a Christian, and things are only going to get even more intense as we get deeper into the last days. Many times Christians in America speak of the persecution that is coming someday. What is with all of the giant pagan idols that are suddenly popping up all over the United States? The latest example of this is a seven ton, 26 foot tall concrete sculpture of an Egyptian god that is being installed at Denver International Airport. The giant statue being constructed at the south end of the DIA terminal is of Anubis - the Egyptian god of death and the afterlife. So why is this being done? Well, it is apparently being put there to advertise the Denver Art Museum's King Tut exhibit that is about to open up. That exhibit will go from June 29th through January 9th, 2011. The plan is for "Anubis" to remain in place at Denver International Airport the entire duration of the exhibit. What is with all of the giant pagan idols that are suddenly popping up all over the... more

For years there has been a raging debate among Christians who study Bible prophecy. Many have believed that the coming Mark of the Beast will be an implantable microchip that is inserted into the right hand or the forehead. Many others insist that the coming Mark of the Beast will be a tattoo of some sort. Well, perhaps it may be a tattoo that utilizes RFID technology.
