America's top Muslim Imam brought that message to Marquette, MI on Oct. 22, 2008 at the Lutheran Campus Ministry (LCM) Lothlórien House.
Imam Hassan Qazwini, head of the Islamic Center of America, says all religions, people are basically the same.

“I was born in Iraq (1964) in a city called Karbala. It’s a holy city in Iraq. After that I went to Kuwait and then to Iran. (studied in Iran). In 1992 I came to the United States.
Up until I came to the United States in 1992, I knew there were Christians in Iraq but I never had any interaction with Christians. I never had any interaction with Jews in Iraq. I lived my own inner world. In Karbala, everybody is Muslim. There were Christians, there were Jews and obviously other denominations in Iraq, but I lived my own inner world. In Karbala, everybody is Muslim, so I really did not have any interaction beyond my little world.
It was in the United States when I have my first encounter with non-Muslims.”
Imam Qazwini told a story about riding in a car with his brother in California and stopping into a busy Christian church - and discovering that all religions believe the concept of love.
He said to Muslims - Jesus is as respected and revered as Mohammad.
Imam Qazwini said all religions and peoples basically “hold the same values - the same beliefs.”
“We passed by a church in a city called West Covina. So I see a church, it was Sunday, it was a church and the parking lot was full. Probably there was over 300 to 400 cars. So I asked my brother ‘What was going on here?’ He said the pastor is giving a sermon.”
“He said ‘Are you sure you really want to go inside the church?’
I said ‘Yes.’ He said “What do you do?’ I said ‘Come on, I’m not going to covert to Christianity. What’s going on here?” (laughter) I said ‘I have a chance to see what does the pastor have to say when he speaks to this congregation.’
“And I listened ...”
“All I heard him talking about was love. Jesus loving you. You love Jesus. And about the concept of love. So as he’s talking I am listening.”
“I said to myself ‘Look, in our religion we also talk about love.”
“Muslims believe that God has 99 names. And one of his names is Al-Wadud. And Al-Wadud is “The Loving One.”
“I said to myself ‘Look almost everything he is talking about is there in my religion.’ And how similar we look. And for every word he says quoting Jesus. I have a word to quote from Mohammad. As Muslims, Jesus to us - he is a prophet as well. He is as respected as Mohammad and as revered as Mohammad because we Muslims believe there are five superior messengers - Mohammad, Jesus, Moses, Noah and Abraham.”
“So we place Jesus almost in the same place - or status - as we place Mohammad.”
“In my mind as I am listening (to the Christian pastor) These words he was uttering are resonating in my mind. And reflecting my own faith system.”
“When we do not see each other, when we do not interact with each other. We think of each other - that we are weird. I think you are weird. You may think that I am weird. You may thing that I harbor some very weird thoughts. I could be a very weird person. I could be someone who does not think like you think. And probably I would have the same thought about you.”
“But when we meet, and we mingle, and we exchange thoughts, we find how striking our similarities are.”
Be Muslims, Christians, Jews or what else - non-denominational - basically we hold the same values - the same beliefs. And we worship God with different tongues and different languages and different styles - but the direction is the same.”

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by conservative radio talk show host Michael Savage against an Islamic civil rights group over its use of a portion of his show in which he called the Quran a "book of hate."
Savage sued the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, for copyright infringement and racketeering lawsuit late last year, claiming the group violated his rights by using a segment of his "Savage Nation" show in a letter-writing campaign to get advertisers to boycott the program. In the broadcast used by CAIR, Savage also called the Muslim holy book "a throwback document."
In her ruling Friday, U.S. District Judge Susan Illston said people who listen to a public broadcast are entitled to use excerpts for purposes of comment and criticism. She also said no evidence was presented to show that advertising on the show's broadcast was affected by CAIR's actions.
The racketeering element of the lawsuit alleged that CAIR was not a civil rights group, but a political organization with ties to terrorist groups. CAIR denies those claims, saying it opposes terrorism and religious extremism.
In an interview with The Associated Press after he filed the lawsuit in December, Savage said he was referring to Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his violent brand of Islamic extremism in the broadcast, not about the religion in general.

A Christian community in Houston is outraged by the delivery of English translations of the Koran being delivered to people's doors. The Korans were delivered along with a flyer that read, “Please accept this gift from your Muslim neighbors.”
While I'm not a fan of proselytizing in any religion, I find it particularly sad that none of the people quoted seemed to recognize that Christian evangelism can be equally offensive to those of other faiths. U.S. President George W. Bush has apologized to Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki over the shooting of the holy Quran by an American soldier, Iraqi official television reported on Tuesday.
"The prime minister received an apology from U.S. President George W. Bush on the incident of shooting of a Quran by a U.S. soldier," the state-run television al-Iraqia said.
On May 11, the Iraqi police found the desecrated copy of the Islamic holy book at a small shooting range near a police station in Radwaniyah. The volume was riddled with bullets and had graffiti inside the cover.
Later, the U.S. military apologized to the local community leaders in Radwaniyah, a mostly Sunni district on Baghdad's southwestern outskirts.
A U.S. military spokesman viewed the incident as both "serious and deeply troubling" but stressed that it was an "isolated incident and a result of one soldier's action."
U.S. commanders have undertaken disciplinary action against the soldier who was involved, and he has been removed from Iraq to the United States, he said without releasing the name of the shooter or how he would be disciplined.
On Monday, the Iraqi Islamic Party, headed by Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi, said apology by U.S. commanders in Iraq is not enough.

A soldier used the Quran for target practice, forcing the chief U.S. commander in Baghdad to issue a formal apology on Saturday.
Maj. Gen. Jeffery Hammond, commander of U.S. forces in Baghdad, apologized to leaders in Radhwaniya, in the western outskirts of Baghdad, for the staff sergeant who was a sniper section leader assigned to the headquarters of the 64th Armored Regiment. He also read a letter of apology by the shooter.
It was the first time the incident -- which tested the relationship between U.S.-backed Sunni militiamen and the military -- was made public since it was discovered May 11.

With misconceptions about Islam in the world very common, a Muslim group in the U.S. has decided to hand out free translations of the Holy Quran so people can get rid of misconceptions about the faith often held from TV.
"I'd read it just to see what it says, but I believe in Jesus, not Allah," said Macy, a longtime Christian. "They have a right to do it . . . but I feel pretty strong in my faith."
The book also contains a number in which people can ask questions regarding the Quran such as "What does Islam say about the Virgin Mary?".
"We're just trying to be honest brokers of information," said Wajahat Sayeed, founder and director of Book of Signs, which also is known as the Al-Furqaan Foundation. "You make your own judgment."
"The general sense will be clear," Sayeed said. "Islam teaches peace."

On Iran's state-owned tv, Channel One milions of Iranians are tunning into the hit weekly drama, "Zero Degree Turn," that centers on a love story between an French Jewish woman and a Iranian-Palestinian Muslim man.
But this aint no ordinary love story because it shows a heart-wrenching tale of European Jews during World War II. Over the course of the 22 episodes, the hero saves his love from Nazi detention camps, and Iranian diplomats in France forge passports for the woman and her family to sneak on to airplanes carrying Iranian Jews to their homeland.
"Iranians have always differentiated between ordinary Jews and a minority of Zionists," says Hassan Fatthi, the show's writer and director. "The murder of innocent Jews during World War II is just as despicable, sad and shocking as the killing of innocent Palestinian women and children by racist Zionist soldiers," he says.
According to the wsj: Iran's Jews -- along with Christians and Zorastrians -- are guaranteed equal rights in the country's constitution. Iran's Jews are guaranteed one member of parliament and are free to study Hebrew in school, pray in synagogues and shop at kosher supermarkets. A Palestinian-American Muslim Fadil Bayyari will build the first permanent temple for the Reform Jewish congregation in Fayetteville for free!
It is likely without his genrosity the congregation may not of been to afford to build it, reports the NY times and according to ABC news its saved Temple Shalom at least $250,000.
Fadil Bayyari said:
“To me, it’s a place of worship,” said Mr. Bayyari, 55. “In my mind and in my religion, I believe in Judaism as part of Islam. We believe in Abraham. We believe in Moses. In the Koran, there’s lots of talk about Isaac and Joseph. I am always fascinated by this, and I always feel I have a relationship with this faith. And knowing what’s happened in the Middle East, what better way to build bridges?”
"Abraham is our forefather," Bayyari said. "We're first cousins. How we got to hate each other is beyond me."

A very interesting and thorough attempt to debase the claims that Islam is a fundamental oppressor of women. This debate is so controversial and I have read many quotes from the Quran which make it difficult for me to believe that Islam does not preach any sort of unequal treatment of men and women. However, I think the main thing defenders of religious texts try to convey is that they are HISTORICALLY and CONTEXTUALLY specific! In this article, the author draws on historical points of reference to demonstrate that Muhammad's words (e.g. about number of wives to take, giving a woman full ownership of property, etc.) were actually progressively fighting for women's rights.

Indonesian Internet companies blocked access to YouTube and MySpace on Tuesday, heeding a government order aimed at stopping people from watching an anti-Islam film by a Dutch lawmaker.
Anti-immigration politician Geert Wilders posted the 15-minute film on the Internet on March 27. It has since been widely available on blogs and file-sharing sites.
Indonesia’s main Internet service providers all said they had temporarily blocked YouTube, MySpace, Google Video and other file-sharing Web sites.
The government ordered the providers to block the sites last week, saying Wilders’ film “could disturb relations between the faiths.”
