Liberal commentator Keith Olbermann on Sunday suggested that the price of gas had been artificially manipulated since President Barack Obama took office to hurt his chances at re-election.
In an appearance on ABC, Olbermann noted he had become suspicious after gas prices increased from $1.61 a gallon when Obama took the oath of Office in January 2009 to nearly $4 a gallon earlier this month.
“The lowest gas prices in the last six years, the nadir of gas prices at the pump, was the day of this president’s inauguration in 2009,” Olbermann explained. “There has to be some connection between that being the least-busy political moment of a president’s career — when you’re not going to hurt him and you’re not going to harm him that way — and the price of gas.”
“There has to be an almost deliberate or at least a side-effect quality to that. There must be.”
Last week, the president proposed measures that would give regulators more power to limit manipulation of the oil markets.
“We can’t afford a situation where some speculators can reap millions while millions of American families get the short end of the stick,” he told reporters.
But Republicans like Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) quickly dismissed the proposal.
During a recent interview with the blog Shark Tank, Bachmann insisted that new legislation wasn’t necessary because Obama “already has the tools and he knows it.”
“This is just about waving a tar baby in the air and saying that something else is the problem. I have never seen a more irresponsible president who is infantile in the way that he continually blames everybody else for his failure to, first, diagnose the problem and, second, to address the problem. It’s always everyone else’s fault.”

President Obama can cut gasoline prices by one third. On any Sunday night while the markets are closed he can announce the following:
"I have decided to tone down the confrontation with Iran as it does not accomplish anything for America but does indeed harm American consumers by gouging them 2.5 billion dollars a week in higher gasoline prices. And these rising prices come at a time when the world is consuming less and producing more oil. Someone is clearly violating the laws of supply and demand and probably many of our anti-trust legal codes as well.
There is no Iranian nuclear weapons program. Iran has 20% grade nuclear fuel which is not sufficient to sustain a nuclear reaction to make an atomic bomb. All Iran has is a nuclear power plant and a medical isotopes program. Bombing it would be a violation of international law and would kill tens of millions of America’s friends in Azerbaijan, Pakistan, India, China, Burma and elsewhere
The President of Iran never said he was going to wipe Israel off the map. That was a deliberate mistranslation which is to say a lie. We were lied to about the Iraqi Weapons of Mass Destruction to get us into the Iraq war and about the Gulf of Tonkin incident to trick us into the Vietnam war. We can no longer afford as a nation to spend trillions of dollars on lies. Therefore I am announcing tonight a reduction of forces in the Persian Gulf and nearby states,
To save consumers 2.5 billion dollars a week by lowering the price of oil $35 a barrel I will take the following steps to properly regulate excessive speculation:
I will ban Commodity Index Swaps and Synthetic Exchange Traded Funds. Additionally, I will order Gary Gensler, the Chairman of the Commodities Futures Trading Commissions, to double the margin requirement on oil futures. If that does not work, I will double the margin requirements again. I will also order Chairman Gensler to limit the share of the speculative oil futures market that can be owned by any one firm. Neither Goldman Sachs nor Morgan Stanley nor JP Morgan has any real need to own more than 5% of the market in any given commodity. Professionals call this position limits.
Of course the above speech will cost Obama his presidency. You would think that the independents and Republicans who are opposed to war without limit and do not trust Romney with his ties to Israel and to Hedge Funds will line up to vote for Obama. They will never have a chance to vote for anyone who is opposed to the excesses of Wall Street and Israel."
The Israel Lobby will go into 24 hour attack mode on the President. Out will come the Obama is a Muslim and Obama is gay campaigns. These attacks will give cover and justification to the birther issue which they would use at the state level to knock Obama off the ballot.President Obama can cut gasoline prices by one third. Yes, we called them 'Whores," and we mean it! --
The Menendez bill would have prevented the big oil companies — Exxon, Chevron, BP, Shell and ConocoPhillips — from using tax deductions when they already rake in record profits. The bill would have also extended tax incentives for green and renewable energy projects, biofuels, electric cars, and energy-efficient homes.

Some handy graphs/charts showing fuel prices in US and Europe on same sort of trajectories, US production v US use of foreign oil, graphed for Bush and Obama administrations (remember bush, the guy who was gonna jawbone the Arabs about prices, but held hands and did kissy face instead), and a chart showing production (pretty stable) v price fluctuations (wildly volatile)
The chart at the bottom:
"As the chart below shows, the talking heads at Fox News have gone out of their way to spread the lie. In just the last couple of months, they have done at least 144 segments blaming the president for rising gas prices. As usual, this unfair and unbalanced cable channel is far more interested in broadcasting Republican propaganda than in telling the truth."

Remember when Stephen Chu, then Director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and now President Obama’s Secretary of Energy, said, “Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe.” Now that gasoline prices are headed in just the direction the esteemed Dr Chu wanted to see, he’s taking back that comment. A man more cynical than your Editor might suspect that President Obama “suggested” to Dr Chu that he needed to make that retraction. Do you remember when Senator Barack Obama (D-IL), who was running for the presidency, criticized President Bush, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) and Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) for gasoline prices approaching $4.00 a gallon? Looks like we are seeing some karmic justice here!
It looks as though the Obama Administration is on its way to achieving the desire expressed by Dr Chu, before his retraction, without ever having had the first bit of control over it, or doing so by any means of which they would have approved. Wagonwheel wanted gasoline prices to be increased, though he wanted it done by increasing taxes. Taxes were not increased, but the price has gone up anyway, so the federal government does not gain any additional revenue, but has to spend more money for fuel. About the only good that your Editor can see from all of this is the increased possibility that Mr Obama will get a four-year head start on his presidential memoirs. The increased fuel prices might not be the President’s fault, but he was certainly of the opinion that they were the President’s responsibility . . . or at least he was in 2008. Your Editor would like to see the voters hold him responsible for gasoline prices this coming November.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Sunday said that there was “no question” President Barack Obama had a plan to raise gas prices when he took office.
“When he ran for office, he said he wanted to see gas prices go up,” the candidate told Fox News host Bret Baier. “He said that energy prices would skyrocket under his views. And he selected three people to help him implement that program: the Secretary of Energy, the Secretary of the Interior, and the EPA administrator.”
The former Massachusetts governor added that Obama needed to fire the “gas-hike trio” because he had “suffered an election-year conversion.”
“Time for them to go probably hand in their resignations if he is really serious about that, and start drilling for energy here, whether that’s our oil, our natural gas, take advantage of our coal resources for power generation,” he said.
“These gasoline prices are hurting American families. And that pain and the result of the president’s policies to turn down the Keystone pipeline from Canada, and at the same time, put $500 million into Solyndra. These policies are not working. His policies are hurting the American people. And they want to have someone who will finally take advantage of our energy resources and I will.”
During a speech at Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Maryland last week, the president said that the U.S. should pursue an “all-of-the-above strategy” for developing new energy sources, including renewable energies like solar, wind and biofuels.
“Here’s the sad thing,” Obama explained to the friendly crowd. “Lately we’ve heard a lot of professional politicians — a lot of the folks who are running for a certain office, who shall go unnamed — they’ve been talking down new sources of energy. They dismiss wind power. They dismiss solar power. They make jokes about biofuels. They were against raising fuel standards. I guess they like gas guzzlers. They think that’s good for our future.”
“We’ve heard this kind of thinking before,” he added. “If some of these folks were around when Columbus set sail — they must have been founding members of the Flat-Earth Society. They would not have believed that the world was round.”
At a recent event in northeastern Ohio, Romney dismissed renewable energy, declaring that “you can’t drive a car with a windmill on it.”
Obama’s campaign has accused Romney of raising taxes on gasoline by 2.5 cents per gallon while serving as governor of Massachusetts.

With the economy improving - Republicans have started attacking President Obama about rising gas prices. Some forecasts show gas prices hitting five dollars a gallon this summer - and the Right wants you to belive that high prices have something to do with President Obama's rejection of the Keystone pipeline - or maybe his refusal to expand drilling in Alaska - or just his downright hatred of America. They want you to belive that the United States has a shortage of oil - and that if the President were to just drill, baby, drill - then prices will plummet. But that's not true. It's not even close to true.
The United States isn't short on oil - it's awash in oil. In fact - we have so much oil that we're getting rid of much of it by shipping it overseas. As Bloomberg reported yesterday...for the first since 1949 - that's 62 years - the United States is now a net-exporter of oil products. That means we shipped more oil products out to places in South America, Europe, and Asia - than we imported in from around the world. In fact - every single day in 2011 - oil corporations ship about 460,000 MORE barrels of oil OUT of the country than were imported into the country that day. So if gas prices are rising because supplies in the US have dropped - then why are we getting rid of so much of it by exporting it? It's because the President can't legally tell multi-billion dollar transnational oil corporations where to sell their oil. And these corporations don't give a damn about gas supplies in the United States - because they're getting a way better deal taking their oil and selling it elsewhere. And that's what they're doing - and that's why they wanted the Keystone pipeline. With the economy improving - Republicans have started attacking President Obama about... more

(FOX19) - There is so much talk right now about gas prices.
Who's at fault? Is it President Obama for not drilling enough? Is it OPEC for price fixing? Could it be greedy oil companies?
There are many reasons being floated as to why gas prices are so high but there is one that you aren't going to hear from most media and it is tied directly to the value of the dollar in your pocket.

By Pema Levy / Talking Points Memo
At an event in Lansing, Michigan Monday, Rick Santorum put forward an alternate theory for the cause of the financial crisis in 2008: that rising gas prices caused Americans to default on their mortgages, leading to the wave of foreclosures that sparked Wall Street's near collapse.
"We went into a recession in 2008 because of gasoline prices," Santorum said to a hotel ballroom of supporters. "The bubble burst in housing because people couldn't pay their mortgages because of $4 a gallon gasoline."

One of Aristotle's laws of nature is that every time fuel prices rise, political snake oil salesmen come out of hiding to blame it on their enemies: They attribute (or implicitly link) cost spikes to the other party's policy decisions. The solution, they always say, lies in the policies they've advocated since what feels like the beginning of time.
This happens every few years, and every few years it's total nonsense.
