Like an anxious admirer, HP continues to lavish gifts on the lucky devs over at WebOS Internals. This time it's sending them pre-release TouchPads as an enticement to get busy and boost the 9.7-inch slate's app count before it launches next month. HP recently promised that "thousands" of TouchPad apps are on their way and, in addition to attracting big names like Skype and Amazon Kindle, it's also ensured that legacy apps continue to be supported on WebOS 3.0.
With nearly 600 unofficial goodies sitting pretty at PreCentral's homebrew app gallery, HP clearly feels it makes sense to reach out in that direction too. And who said love was just a trick?Like an anxious admirer, HP continues to lavish gifts on the lucky devs over at WebOS... more

Hi, there Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols your host today. I’ve been using and writing about Linux and open source for entirely too long. Suffice it to say that while I didn’t use Linux 0.01, I was running Linux not long after that. So, with introductions out of the way, let’s move on to the quiz shall we?...

"Few sensational things happened last week in one of the oldest debates of the Linux community, GNOME vs KDE, touching on the topic of freedesktop.org and joined this time by the new hot topic, "GNOME vs Canonical". The bulk of the actions happened in the comments section of two blog posts, one by Dave Neary (1) , well-known GNOME advocate and another post by Aaron Seigo (2) , well-known KDE Developer. I want to improve my writing skills and the ability to get information from a community discussion. So, below is a step in that direction...."

Want to use a wiki to store your notes, thoughts, recipes, or just the best Charlie Sheen quotes you've heard today? Try setting up a personal wiki, like TiddlyWiki. It's easy, lightweight, and you can set it up and customize it in a weekend.
You're no doubt familiar with MediaWiki, the wiki that powers Wikipedia. MediaWiki is a powerful wiki engine and great if you need to share a wiki with a lot of people for work or a project. But it's a bit too heavy for a single-user unless you enjoy maintaining a MySQL database and Web server to run it. It's not ridiculously hard, but it's more work than I feel like doing just for a wiki.
TiddlyWiki, on the other hand, is a single-file download. You open it in the browser and that's it. Why do you need a weekend? Because it'll take a bit to get used to its conventions and it's very extensible.

Debian wins two of seven categories at the Linux New Media Awards 2011
March 4th, 2011
The Debian representatives were quite busy at this year's Linux New Media Awards, which were presented yesterday during CeBIT in Hanover, Germany. They first took the stage when the award for "Best Open Source Server Distribution" was presented by Peter Ganten, Managing Director of Univention GmbH. In presenting the award he emphasized that Debian has done pioneering work not only in the technical field but also in the definition of free software standards and processes.
The Debian representatives were called to the stage a second time when the most important award, "Outstanding Contribution to Open Source/Linux/Free Software", was presented by Karsten Gerloff, president of the Free Software Foundation Europe. He took the stage to present the award and first put on a Debian Tartan tie before praising Debian with a very moving speech.
He particularly emphasized Debian's dedication to software freedom saying: "In Debian, quality is the focus of everyone's attention. But those who work on the Debian system know that great software is worth nothing without Freedom. With the release of Squeeze, the latest stable version, in February, Debian has taken the important step of offering a completely free kernel, with no binary blobs. This is a first for a major distribution in recent times. Debian is giving its users Freedom by default. And this Freedom for users and developers on a massive scale truly is Debian's outstanding contribution, not just to Free Software, but to the information society."
The awards were accepted by Debian Press Officers Meike Reichle and Alexander Reichle-Schmehl, who used their acceptance speeches to thank Linux New Media, the jury and in particular the developers and contributors of the Debian project whose ongoing work and dedication continues to inspire.
The ceremony was also streamed live over the Internet, and a video recording will be available soon.
Debian is particularly proud to have been distinguished on this occasion, having narrowly missed receiving the award "Outstanding Contribution to Open Source/Linux/Free Software" in previous years.
About Debian
The Debian Project was founded in 1993 by Ian Murdock to be a truly free community project. Since then the project has grown to be one of the largest and most influential open source projects. Thousands of volunteers from all over the world work together to create and maintain Debian software. Available in 70 languages, and supporting a huge range of computer types, Debian calls itself the "universal operating system".http://www.debian.org/News/2011/20110304

Google released two new versions of Chrome yesterday, version 10 for beta users and version 11 for developers willing to put up with more instability.
With Google's six-week update schedule, the new releases are milestones that Chrome users pass--often not necessarily noticing given the software's silent auto-update mechanism. But there are significant new features coming with the new beta.
Top on Google's list is faster JavaScript with the "Crankshaft" version of the new V8 JavaScript engine. JavaScript runs increasingly sophisticated Web-based applications such as Google Docs, and this highly competitive aspect of browser performance has become even more so with the "Chakra" engine in the forthcoming IE9 from Microsoft.
Crankshaft leaps ahead 65 percent on Google's own V8 benchmark suite. Note, though, that faster JavaScript is only one aspect of overall browser performance, and that other benchmarks such as Mozilla's Kraken can yield different results.
Also in Chrome 10 (Windows | Mac | Linux) is hardware-accelerated video, which can increase computing efficiency and spare battery life; settings controls that move from a pop-up dialog box to a browser tab; and password synchronization among different installations of Chrome (though not, as with Firefox, with Chrome on Android).
Google isn't talking much yet about its Chrome 11 (Windows | Mac | Linux) plans, but it looks like one interesting feature on the way is "chromoting," which lets a Chrome browser remotely take over another machine over a network. It's not unlike LogMeIn or other remote desktop applications, but those can't be installed on a Chrome OS machine, so chromoting gives a browser-based mechanism. That, in turn, would let Chrome OS in effect remotely run some native software that wouldn't run on a Chrome OS machine.

Review of Linux Mint Debian 201012 64bit & How-to Install Tutorial on AMD Athlon64 x2 Compaq Laptop. This is a Live Action video rather than a Screencast. "What a better time than Christmas to bring all the best from 2010 into an updated release of Linux Mint 'Debian'. All Mint 10 features; 64-bit support; performance boost (using cgroup, the notorious '4 lines of code better than 200' in user-space); installer improvements (multiple HDDs, GRUB install on partitions, swap allocation, Btrfs support); better fonts (using Ubuntu's libcairo, fontconfig and Ubuntu Font Family) and language support; better connectivity and hardware support; better sound support (addressing conflicts between Pulse Audio and Flash); updated software and packages"Review of Linux Mint Debian 201012 64bit & How-to Install Tutorial on AMD Athlon64... more
