I was in the Kansai/Nagoya area recently to take in a geisha performance in Kyoto and to tour a castle or two in the Nagoya area.
While I was there I met Maggie and her owner Gimmeabreakman from Youtube. Gimmeabreakman interviewed me on the controversial Tokyo Yamanote Halloween Train which caused quite a bit of furor on the internet. Internet denizens were either up in arms against it or that they missed it.
Here I discuss how overly-demonized the event is and how many people are just experiencing internet faux rage over something that they probably never heard before they saw it on youtube or some other forum

Just when I thought this Halloween Train business over and done with after its no show on Halloween night, I get an email and video from someone claiming they have video footage of that Train party.
It starts with a complilation of other people's videos on previous Halloween Train events including mine then when it promises to reveal the "carnage" of the Halloween Train on the 31st it suddenly cuts to you know what but this one has scenes from the Halloween Train complilation put into it for extra fun.
I got doubly rick rolled because I was actually out there looking for said train and supposedly it was all a hoax or the hoax is a hoax to save face because no one showed up Friday night.
Anyway, the video takes a while load for some reason but enjoy a bit of Rick Roll Yamanote Halloween Train style!

The infamous Tokyo Yamanote Halloween Train rode yet once more this year despite fears of police crackdowns and potential violence from frustrated internet nerds.
Despite assurances from some that last Saturday's Yamanote Halloween Train was a bust, the following account paints a completely different picture.
There were stalking otaku nerds from 2channel, photographers, and police protection! All in all good fun.

Tokyo Yamanote Halloween Train rides again and we get rockstar treatment.
Police protection, avidly-snapping photographers, and love-hate psycho stalkers.
We were the the few, the proud, the loud.
Some naysayers say there wasn't a party but watch this video and judge for yourself. We all had fun.

The semi-annual traditional Tokyo Yamanote Halloween Train takes off again! This Year there were actually two Halloween Trains. One got shutdown. The other was not. This is about the one that was not shut down.
Due to the popularity of last year's event, alot of controversy erupted particularly on the site 2ch.net which is notorious for the xenophobic ultra-conservative nature of the users there. The partiers have been called terrorists and hijackers. There were threats of arrest, deportation, and even violence.
Also equally vehement against the party were foriegners and foreign-residents of Japan who often echoed the xenophobic sentiments of the 2ch.net users.
The event only happens once a year on generally one train for mainly an hour but to hear the critics bemoan about, you'd think the entire city gets shut down.
What they miss is that the event is a multi-national event but which is also heavily influenced by Japan. In all three years I've ridden the Halloween Train, the largest nationality percentage of the participants has been Japanese. Also many of the costumes wore by Japanese and foriegners are based on Japanese culture from Power Rangers, ninja, Anime characters, samurai, etc...
In the end, it's just a fun event and little bit of mischievous steam-venting! Unlike our critics, we are not discriminatory. We invite everyone to join and have fun!The semi-annual traditional Tokyo Yamanote Halloween Train takes off again! This Year... more
