From Raw Story .com:
Progressive and liberal activists are planning at the end of the month to confront the secretive billionaire family that finances the so-called Tea party movement and a host of other right-wing causes and institutions.
"Our government is supposed to be of, by and for the people. So are you ready to take it back?" an invitation for the "Uncloaking the Kochs" event asked.
The Sunday, Jan. 30 event thrown by Common Cause, a nonpartisan, grassroots organization, aims to educate attendees in California on the Koch brothers who will be strategizing nearby with their mega-wealthy allies to win the 2012 elections. Afterwards, activists will rally in Rancho Mirage.
"We can't sit back while a few billionaires destroy the fragile fabric of democracy and the protections that are so necessary for the health of our society," Jodie Evans of CodePink told Alternet. "It is time for the progressive community to gather together and say no more, and what better place than where the Koch brothers are plotting their next moves."
Panel discussions will feature Robert Reich, former Labor Secretary; Van Jones, founder of Green for All; Erwin Chemerinsky, UC Irvine Law Dean; Lee Fang, Center for American Progress blogger and Koch Brothers expert; and DeAnn McEwen, co-president of the California Nurses Association.
For the last 30 years, the Koch brothers, who inherited their wealth from their father's oil interests, have funded a large portion of the conservative movement on issues that promote business over the environmental, labor, and public health concerns.
Recently, David and Charles Koch through their network of foundations and nonprofits outspent ExxonMobile on astroturf campaigns to misinform the American public about climate change legislation.
"From 2005 to 2008, ExxonMobil spent $8.9 million while the Koch Industries-controlled foundations contributed $24.9 million in funding to organizations of the 'climate denial machine,'" Greenpeace International reported.
Koch also donated funds to elect George W. Bush in 2000 as well as influence the results of the vote recount in Florida.
Among the top recipients of Koch funding are Americans for Prosperity, the Heritage Foundation, and the Cato Institute, which was co-founded by Charles Koch in 1977. Lesser amounts have gone to such groups as Grover Norquist's Americans for Tax Reform and the Capital Research Center, which has been the primary source of ACORN-related conspiracy theories.
Prominent members of Congress to whom Koch has donated generously include Republicans Eric Cantor (R-VA) and John Boehner (R-OH) and Democrat Blanche Lincoln (D-AR).
Koch Industries, the second largest private company in America, recently sued a group of pranksters who claimed that the company would adopt pro-environment policies from now on.
“This is not a Koch Industries release,” a Koch spokesperson said in an advisory. “We remain committed to the principled positions we have taken on a wide variety of issues.”
Comedian Bill Maher on Friday lashed out at the followers of the Tea party movement whose activities are funded by Koch's Americans for Prosperity group.
The Founding Fathers "were everything you despise. They studied science, read Plato, hung out in Paris, and thought the Bible was mostly bullshit," he said.

The annual Indio International Tamale Festival returns Palm Springs Saturday, with around 70 vendors expected to sell more than 250,000 of the popular Mexican holiday staple.
The festival, which is set for Dec. 5-6 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., is expected to draw as many as 125,000 people, said Jim Curtis, a city spokesman.
The Tamale Festival Holiday Parade is set to kick off the event Saturday at 10 a.m. The parade will begin on Miles Avenue and then go east on Oasis Street to Requa and Wilson streets, according to Curtis.
Santa is set to appear in the parade, in which entries using cornhusks as decoration are encouraged.
The festival will feature different types of tamales, including traditional, gourmet and dessert.
The 1999 festival set a Guinness World Record for the ``World's Largest Tamale,'' which measured one foot in diameter and 40 feet in length, Curtis said. The annual Indio International Tamale Festival returns Palm Springs Saturday, with... more

In a continued show of callousness and arrogance, the Riverside County DA’s office is continuing their unrelenting siege against mmj patient Gary Silva. Just when everyone thought it was all over, Gary is back in court and practically back to square one.
To bring you all up to speed about Gary and his trials, check out the video where Gary tells the whole story of the arrest.
In what appears to be their last act of defiance to the medicinal use issue, Riverside County has abandoned all things "215" and has declared war on the medicinal users of cannabis within their jurisdiction.
Choosing to pursue this issue in the case of Gary and Krista Silva, the prosecution was able to convince a stand-in superior court judge, that Gary should begin trial on the cultivation charge, and dismissing the weapons charge based upon the inability on the part of the D.A.’S Office, after three (3) years of "Searching" the records archives, to produce one shred of evidence, or official documentation that proves that Gary was a convicted felon, and therefore not allowed to possess any firearms. (He was housing a gun collection belonging to a family member).
The cultivation stems from a small room, indoor grow, which produced a relatively small amount of medicine, and was used by Gary who possessed a valid recommendation from his physician to use.
I don't know for certain what the reasoning behind this recent move, really is, but I do know one thing, and that is that Gary and Krista have lost their home and are living in a Fifth Wheel parked on his mothers property, and have been doing so for over a year. That all of "This" has taken a toll on their health, their finances, their relationship, and emotional state is an understatement to say the least, Krista had a job doing what she liked working at a pre-school, until she was spotted by a parent who knew who she was, and knew about Gary's case, and threatened to remove her child. Krista was placed on a "Leave of Absence" without pay since Christmas.
January 20, 2009, was supposed to mark a day of "Change!!" The only change to occur in the lives of Gary and Krista Silva is that on the 17th of next month, the prosecution and defense will meet in a "T.R.C." (Trial Readiness Conference), and if the judge fails once again to see through this madness, a trial date will be set, and Gary Silva's fate will once again be in the hands of strangers, or those he has known for a very short time. And the ironic part is that the judge, prosecutor, and court personnel all get paid regardless of how long a case goes on, regardless how many times its postponed, stayed, or continued. That is why after three years, three different defense attorneys, two judges, and numerous deputy D.A.'s, Gary will get his day in court But lacking in his one time adobe house on five acres of fenced desert property, his business which helped in allowing him his home, workshop, entertainment center, and his vintage car, and beloved Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and allowing him and his wife to live comfortably reaping the rewards of their hard work installing tracks, hanging, cutting, customizing, window and separation curtains, from hospitals to "Dressing" single family residences, Gary and Krista worked hard, paid taxes, and raised families, and lived the “American” dream, only to become victim to what has become the "American" reality.
To say that what has happened to them is a miscarriage of justice, is an understatement to say the least. This is nothing short of a travesty and a violation of not only the intent of "Proposition 215," but a violation of all things decent and moral. In a continued show of callousness and arrogance, the Riverside County DA’s... more
